Chapter 13: 13 - Heading to the Grand Line
13 - Heading to the Grand Line
—Smoker, if you keep being so grumpy, little Hina-Hina won't like you —Kara said as she boarded the ship, teasing him.
—Stop talking nonsense and let's set sail —Smoker replied, even more annoyed.
—Yeah, yeah. Let's head to the Grand Line. By the way, let's stop by an island… I need to visit an old acquaintance and kidnap a cute doctor for us —Kara said with a mischievous smile.
—Old acquaintance? —Tashigi asked.
—Yeah, she helped me create a skin cream that made me quite rich —Kara replied with a grin.
—You created that cream?! That's amazing! It's the best cream on the market; all the female Marines buy it as soon as it hits the stores! —Tashigi said, surprised.
—Alright, here, I'll give you a box —Kara said, pulling one out of nowhere and handing it to her.
—Thank you! —Tashigi said, quite excited.
—Enough chatter, everyone to your posts! —Smoker shouted, irritated. Tashigi quickly ran off to store her creams before returning to work.
Meanwhile, Kara simply brought out a chair and sat down to sunbathe, much to Smoker's annoyance, though it was better to have her quiet and still.
—By the way, Kara, something's been on my mind —Zoro said as he approached.
—What is it? —Kara asked without even looking at him.
—How do you make things appear out of nowhere? —Zoro asked, since her ability was supposed to be destruction or, as Kara called it, Crash Magic.
—Oh, that. It's because I learned a bit of spatial magic from a redhead. It's supposed to be only for equipment, but I managed to modify it so it works like a magic storage chest —Kara said casually.
—Space?... I see, a mysterious ability —Zoro said, not fully understanding, as he sat down to rest.
Seeing both the "boss" and his subordinate sitting around doing nothing, Smoker was furious. However, since Kara was technically a high-ranking officer and Zoro her subordinate, he couldn't give them orders, so he just walked away to ignore them.
—Lady Kara! —Coby shouted, standing with the Marines who would remain in Loguetown—. Thank you for letting me become a Marine! When we meet again, I'll be an officer to prove you didn't make a mistake in choosing me! And in the future, I'll become an admiral! —he declared, saluting with his hand to his forehead.
—Oh? You want to surpass me? Then, good luck —Kara said with a smile, casually saluting back.
Crash Magic is an extremely powerful magic that consists of breaking everything the user touches. It can even shatter magic into pieces, nullifying its effects, as well as reducing its power and deflecting it. Even the most powerful spells are useless against this destructive and highly advanced magic, which is said to be difficult to control, even for an extremely powerful individual like Gildarts.
When used, a web-like pattern forms and activates directly through whatever it touches. The target is separated into cubes. However, it does not lose its properties. An important thing to note is that, in theory, this magic cannot harm living or biological objects.
Or at least, that's how Crash Magic was supposed to work when Kara learned it from Gildarts.
But in this world, her magic changed little by little as she grew stronger.
Over time, the web-like pattern could overlay itself multiple times, breaking what it touched into cubes so small they technically became dust.
However, the biggest change was that now she could destroy everything, literally, though at the cost of excessive magic and Haki consumption. By combining them, she could destroy things she previously couldn't, including living beings—something that wasn't possible before. Luckily, it required much more concentration when used on a living being; otherwise, they would just end up as tiny miniature dolls.
Kara discovered this when she lost control in Willhill, and over time, she became more skilled at using it. Of course, it also depended on the person's physical resistance and how tough their skin was.
For example, harming Big Mom was unlikely unless she used her full power in every attack.
Fortunately, she didn't lose the ability to swim despite using her magic. However, she never went into the water, preferring to let everyone believe she had a Devil Fruit rather than risk ending up in a Mariejois laboratory.
And one thing Kara always found strange… or rather, something that made her extremely happy, was that her Fairy Tail tattoo remained in place. It was the insignia that granted her magical power, since in this world, magic as she knew it didn't exist. It was also the reason she never lost hope of reuniting with her guild.
—I always wondered if I could destroy part of the Red Line if I used all my power —Kara said as she gazed at the massive red wall rising before them.
—Don't try anything stupid while we're traveling together, —grumbled Smoker, putting an end to her wild ideas.
Meanwhile, Tashigi was training, fighting against Zoro not far from them.
—Say, Smoker, aren't we supposed to request a ship capable of sailing through the Calm Belt instead of entering through Reverse Mountain? —asked Kara, watching as the massive mountain loomed closer.
—This way is faster. We don't have time to wait for the ship from Marineford. The Straw Hats move quickly, —Smoker replied calmly. —Shouldn't a central inspector travel with their own ship to cross the Calm Belt? —he added, glancing at her.
—Oh, me? I just traveled inside a Sea King to get here, —Kara said casually, as if it were nothing out of the ordinary, almost like public transportation.
—I see... you're still doing that, —muttered Smoker, not particularly surprised.
—By the way, what did you tell Sengoku to get him to let you leave your hideout? —Kara asked with interest. She knew it was unlikely that Smoker's direct superior would allow him to leave Loguetown, so he must have contacted Sengoku directly. Something that, in theory, should be difficult, yet Smoker had managed it.
—I told him that someone needed to keep an eye on you because you were planning to bother a Shichibukai again… and that you let the Revolutionary Army escape just because they dirtied your cape. Which, by the way, you've already destroyed again, —Smoker replied shamelessly. —Oh, and he said that you've already used up all the capes you can request this year, —he added, relaying Sengoku's message.
—Tsk… so you used me. How did you know I was planning to mess with Cocoloco? —Kara said, not seeming the least bit upset.
—Cocoloco...? You just admitted it now, —said Smoker, realizing who Kara was talking about.
—Sir, we're about to enter Reverse Mountain! —a soldier quickly reported.
Smoker simply nodded.
Despite its massive size and weight, the Marine ship was effortlessly lifted by the ocean current climbing the mountain. Then, it descended just as swiftly.
At last, they had entered the Grand Line.
—Captain Smoker, do we need to stop at the lighthouse to restock supplies? —a soldier asked.
—No. The Log Pose to the next island. The lighthouse only has an old man, —Smoker said patiently.
They still didn't know which route Luffy had taken, so it was better to head to an island to resupply and investigate at their own pace.
—Mmm... Looks like my arch-nemesis Laboon and the old man aren't here. Maybe they're at the bottom of the sea, —Kara commented while looking around, unable to spot the giant whale or sense Crocus's presence inside the lighthouse.
Kara called Laboon her enemy, but in reality, they were good friends. Their friendship, however, was based on punches.
Their peculiar relationship began when, during one of her escapades, Kara decided to explore Reverse Mountain. At that exact moment, old man Garp appeared to capture her while she was trying to visit Luffy. She tried to flee, but at the worst possible moment, Laboon emerged from the sea and got in her way, causing her to crash into the gigantic whale and end up in Garp's hands.
Since then, as revenge, Kara would come to bother Laboon and scribble horrible graffiti all over his head.
Of course, Kara had told Crocus about the strange skeleton floating in the Florian Triangle, but the old doctor was too elderly to travel in search of Brook.
And, for some reason, Kara could never find Moria's ship in the thick fog. She assumed it was fate and left it to her "little brother" to take care of it in the future.
In reality, she never realized that there was a Vivre Card for Moria in Marineford. But no one wanted Kara to end up killing another Shichibukai, so they all kept it hidden from her.
