Chapter 149: Tragedy!
After Ye Jiumu finished repairing the dimensional rift and packed up the toolbox, the two of them carefully checked the arrangement inside the room and, after confirming there was nothing unusual, slowly exited and locked the door of the house.
As they entered the elevator, Pei Yan pressed the button and casually asked, "I noticed that even after you finished the repairs, there's still a faint trace of energy from another dimension leaking out. How long until it's completely back to normal?"
"Well, this is the best we can patch it up. This dimensional fissure no longer has the potential for natural cracking. As long as no one forcibly breaks through, those tiny gaps will be automatically repaired and healed by energy from the other world in a little more than a week."
Upon hearing Ye Jiumu's words, Pei Yan yawned and nodded. The two of them got into a car waiting downstairs and watched as it slowly drove away from the neighborhood.
At the time, Pei Yan didn't think much of it as a task point. He thought he would never come back here, at least not for a long time. But he didn't expect that just a few days later, he would return to this place, and this time it would bring him a very unpleasant memory.
Three days later, coincidentally a holiday, Pei Yan's team was granted a special day off after consecutive missions. Pei Yan decided to take the day to rest and balance work with leisure. Moreover, tonight would be the first group dinner for all fourteen members of the team, and Shangxing was granted special permission by Elder Lin to be temporarily discharged to attend.
Although he didn't plan to do physical training, Pei Yan didn't idle around. He got up early, washed up, and sat at his desk watching combat instructional videos. Thanks to Li Songtao, he was now more closely integrated with the machine. Any combat moves he watched could be recorded in his mind, and when facing battles again, he wouldn't experience the stagnation he used to, now executing moves swiftly and precisely.
Now he could slightly hold the upper hand against Xia Yu in combat without using abilities, even though Xia Yu was envious of his opportunistic ability. Still, she enjoyed having an opponent that could improve her level. Such encounters were rare for any aspiring individual, so their daily rest breaks often included one or two combat matches, which had become routine.
While Pei Yan was propping his chin and watching videos, Wang Wenze was getting ready in front of the mirror. Taking advantage of the day off, he planned to accompany Liang Qian for a walk. He always found enjoyment in doing this.
"Yan Zi, do you need me to bring you back something?" Wang Wenze asked while fixing his hair.
Pei Yan glanced around, kicked the empty yogurt bucket by the desk, and said, "Bring back a few more buckets of yogurt. I've been so busy these days that I forgot to order them online."
"Alright, will do!"
Just as Wang Wenze finished fixing his hair and was about to leave, the panting Liang Qian ran to the dormitory door. Pei Yan turned to see her breathless state and couldn't help but tease, "Whoa, Miss Liang, no need to rush. Are you here to show off your relationship?"
"Enough joking! Get ready to leave! There's an emergency mission!" Liang Qian spoke with a serious expression after calming her breath.
Upon hearing this, Pei Yan and Wang Wenze exchanged glances. Seeing how serious it seemed, Wang Wenze silently cursed his luck. The two quickly dressed and followed Liang Qian, running downstairs from the dormitory.
Once they joined Ye Jiumu and his companion downstairs, the six of them stepped into the Teleportation Array.
Seeing the familiar surroundings after stepping out of the Teleportation Array, Pei Yan smacked his lips in surprise, "Didn't we just come here a few days ago? What's wrong with the dimensional fissure again?"
"It's not that! There's been a serious incident at a certain Agricultural University. The police have sent a cooperation request. Have you all changed your appearance and put on your police uniforms? Remember, our identities this time are as provincial police officers assisting in the investigation. Captain Hu has already arrived ahead to prepare for initial contact. Follow orders and don't reveal anything." Ye Jiumu reminded them, turning back.
"Understood," everyone responded in unison. Pei Yan instinctively touched the eye patch on his left eye. Having gotten used to life with a Mechanical Eye, he felt somewhat uncomfortable once it was covered.
The group, having changed their appearance and clothes, exited the secret level of the Teleportation Array. Two police cars were already waiting outside for them, and they sped off with sirens blaring.
Over twenty minutes later, the police cars slowly entered the campus of a certain Agricultural University. Through the windows, they could see the crowd gathered outside pointing and discussing. Clearly, whatever happened here had spread throughout the campus.
But what exactly had happened? The last dimensional rift wasn't even here...
As the cars progressed, the crowd grew larger. The driving officer persistently honked to clear a path, and Pei Yan understood they were nearing the scene of the incident. In front of a dormitory building, a dense crowd of about one to two hundred students gathered. Despite police cordons and school guidance, the students refused to leave, watching events unfold from a distance.
Pei Yan got out of the car, adjusted the police cap on his head, and strode into the dormitory, following the lead officer. As they climbed to the fifth floor, the smell of blood wafting from the hallway made Pei Yan frown. With such a strong scent from this distance, how much blood had been shed?
Feeling a sense of unease, he followed the officer down the corridor, immediately noticing Hu Wenjun standing at a dorm room's door, conversing with a police superintendent.
Upon seeing Ye Jiumu, Hu Wenjun gestured to them. Once the group gathered, Hu Wenjun smiled at the superintendent and said, "Captain Fan, we'll take it from here. These are my subordinates. Ye Jiumu, go inside for a look. Be careful not to disturb the scene!"
Sticking to the principle of speaking less and listening more, Pei Yan hadn't said a word so far. But when he reached the dorm room's entrance, the overwhelming stench of blood and decay hit him hard, making him hesitant to breathe deeply.
Captain Fan nodded at each of them with a smile. He had spotted the oddities in today's case as soon as he arrived on the scene. Despite having heard of similar bizarre cases before, he never imagined encountering one in his career. After reporting the situation, the response was quick, indicating specialists would handle it and instructing him to fully cooperate.
For this reason, he had already cleared the entire building, with his team ready to enforce lockdowns from below.
Seeing others take over the hot potato, he was relieved to step back. Seeing some female officers wanting to enter, he extended his arm in good faith to advise, "Female officers should perhaps stay out."
Confused, Xia Yu asked, "Why?"
Sighing, Captain Fan cast a sidelong glance at the dormitory: "It's too horrific. In all my years as a criminal investigator, I've never seen anything this brutal. I think if you're not mentally prepared, it's better not to look; it could leave you with a psychological scar."
Smiling slightly, Xia Yu replied, "Thanks for the warning, Captain Fan, but I'm not that fragile." She then stepped past Captain Fan toward the dormitory.
Seeing her insistence, Captain Fan had no choice but to shake his head and prepare to observe her reaction.
Indeed, even someone as tough as Xia Yu was visibly pale for a moment upon seeing the scene in the dorm. Although she quickly regained her composure, behind her, Liang Qian stood frozen for about ten seconds before finally rushing off with a hand over her mouth. In contrast, Zhao Yuanhu remained impassive throughout, his expression unmoved.
