Chapter 158: Unexpected Awakener (Requesting Subscription)

Pei Yan, standing inside the room outside Jiezhi Space, looked at the family portrait on the homeowner's wall. Watching the little girl's bright smile in the photo, the cigarette in his mouth remained unlit. He sighed deeply and put it back in the cigarette case; a good family was destroyed by this sudden catastrophe.

Just as he lamented the unpredictability of life, a flash of light appeared inside the house. Song Mingyuan, dressed hastily with only a coat thrown over him, was escorted out by Wang Wenze and Ye Jiumu, head hung in a desolate manner.

Hu Wenjun somehow found a black mask and disdainfully placed it over Song's head, giving a low command, "Take him away!"

Under everyone's escort, Song Mingyuan was forcefully led into the elevator. As Pei Yan led him out of the building and looked ahead, it was just as Captain Hu had said; the entrance to the building was thronged with onlookers. Today being a rest day, the vigilant elders knew something was amiss when they saw the police cars drive into the community. As more police and ambulances arrived, with staff coming and going and the cordon set up, even a fool would know something big had happened.

Usually accustomed to executing tasks in the shadows, Pei Yan was a bit uncomfortable with the spectators' pointing and murmuring. He adjusted his police hat and was about to shove Song Mingyuan into the police car when a little girl pushed through the crowd to dash forward. Right as she was about to break through the police line, a female officer caught her around the waist and held her tightly, but she wouldn't give up. Ignoring the tears streaming down her face, she screamed at Song Mingyuan, "Give me back my dad! Give me back my grandpa!"

Hearing the little girl's heart-wrenching cries, Pei Yan clearly felt Song Mingyuan's body tremble slightly. He didn't know if Song Mingyuan felt regret or guilt at that moment, but it was all over; the grave mistake had been made.

Unable to bear seeing such a human tragedy, Pei Yan turned away from the crying girl. Giving Song Mingyuan a hard push from behind, just as the stumbling criminal was about to step onto the police armored vehicle, a woman's scream rang out from behind.

"Ahhh!" At the sound of the scream, Pei Yan sensed an energy release from within. Startled, he realized there was an Abnormal among them and quickly turned back. The female officer who had blocked the little girl was now lying on the ground, screaming as if on fire, frantically trying to strip off her police uniform despite the public eye.

The little girl, no longer blocked, lowered her head and crossed the police line, running two quick steps past the jaw-dropped Pei Yan to grab tightly to Song Mingyuan's pant leg.

Already incapacitated by the suppression ring, Song Mingyuan was unexpectedly seized, letting out a scream as he toppled forward onto the ground. His arms were securely restrained, unable to free himself, and unable to endure the severe pain in his leg, he kicked backward violently, striking the little girl in the face. The kick caused her to bleed from the nose, but she still wouldn't let go, clinging fiercely to his pants, staring at him with eyes that could kill Song Mingyuan ten thousand times.

Only then did the others react. Xiaoyu stepped forward, protecting the little girl's head and prying her hands away, pulling her away from Song Mingyuan. Pei Yan saw Xiaoyu's brow furrow slightly at the moment she held the girl, biting her lip, clearly feeling the pain but not making a sound.

Meanwhile, Hu Wenjun moved ahead to the fallen female officer, holding her struggling body down to prevent her from further embarrassing herself. Holding the half-conscious and wildly flailing officer, he turned towards the police car, shouting, "Get the criminal on the car! Take the girl as well."

The crowd was clearly terrified by this sudden scene, and the murmurs and discussions grew louder. Some were even preparing to capture the bizarre scene on their phones, but Pei Yan, realizing the situation, had already activated his powers. No matter how you record or photograph it now, the footage won't be on your phone later.

Ye Jiumu and Wang Wenze hoisted the flailing, four-legged Song Mingyuan off the ground. Wang Wenze tightened his grip, his large hand clamping down on Song's arm like a vise, whispering angrily, "Damn! What are you screaming about! Behave yourself!" Then, pressing down on his head, forced him onto the police car.

On the other side, Xiaoyu, biting her lip, holding the still-sobbing little girl, jumped into the passenger seat. Meanwhile, the little girl's mother and grandmother, having received the news, were about to jump off the ambulance to check the situation, but were stopped by the Three Pristine Department's agents, who cast a spell temporarily knocking them out before they could cry out.

Hu Wenjun had just settled the fainted female officer when the sweaty Captain Fan approached, asking in a deep voice, "What's going on here?"

"Don't ask, just calm the masses, and you'll get an explanation later," Hu Wenjun said curtly, closing the door to prevent Captain Fan from seeing more.

"How can I not ask? The crime happened here, the suspect is caught, and I haven't even seen them! There's been one death and one severe injury, nearly two cases of homicide, and what was that just now? All these people witnessed it, what do I say! What's with Xiaoliu on our team? And the little girl, you need to explain this!" Captain Fan, seeing Hu Wenjun turn away to drive off, couldn't suppress his confusion and anger any longer. He grabbed Hu Wenjun's collar, pulling him to a secluded spot behind the car, lowly growling.

Seeing the silent and sullen Captain Fan, Hu Wenjun took off his cap, spun in a circle while pointing at him, "I don't care what department you're from, whether it's the Dragon Team or the Fifth Team, you must give me a reasonable explanation today. I've cooperated with you all the way, and you can't leave me in the dark!"

"That's not the intention. I'll take your officer back first and return them intact in two days. Just tell the public she had an epileptic seizure. As for the suspect, I must take him back. There are many complicated ties here, sorry, I really can't tell you. Trust me, your superiors will contact you shortly," Hu Wenjun explained, leaning against the police car, calmly perusing the agitated Captain Fan.

Just as he finished speaking, Captain Fan's phone rang in his pocket. Hu Wenjun gestured, "Take it."

Captain Fan glanced at Hu Wenjun, then took out his phone and looked at the caller ID. After a frustrated internal battle during the call, he reluctantly hung up and returned to Hu Wenjun, "Take them. I'll handle things here. I hope you keep your promise, return my officer safe and sound in two days. What about the little girl?"

"Just say she was traumatized by the incident, leading to psychological damage. We took her to the hospital for consultation from the best psychological experts. We'll handle her family," Hu Wenjun said, opening the car door and sitting in the driver's seat.

As he bowed his head to start the car, Captain Fan placed a hand on the window, frowning, "Can you tell me who you people really are?"

"Not much different from you. You're here to eliminate society's stains, while we're cleaning up after a bunch of crazies."
