Chapter 165: Ace Trainer Volkner
~Azure S. POV~
[Johto Region, Next Day, Route 44]
*Wooosh*
The wind whistled past my ears as Skarmory soared through the sky, the sprawling landscape of the Johto region a patchwork quilt below. Pikachu, perched on my shoulder, squeaked with delight, his tail crackling with static electricity.
Eevee, nestled comfortably in my lap, gazed with wide-eyed wonder at the passing clouds. Even Celebi, usually flitting about with boundless energy, sat quietly between us, its gentle aura radiating a sense of peace.
I grinned, the sheer joy of flight always exhilarating. We departed from Yellow and Crystal as I continued my journey. But my impatience to challenge Clair at the Blackthorn City Gym was getting the better of me.
It was a long trek, and Skarmory, bless her metallic heart, was starting to show signs of fatigue. I said, patting Skarmory's neck in a kind voice, "Alright, big gal. Let's find a place to rest. Route 44 should be just up ahead."
*Fwp*
Skarmory let out a grateful screech and banked towards the ground, landing gracefully in a clearing surrounded by tall reeds and glistening ponds. Route 44 was a haven for Water-type Pokémon, a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life.
Quagsire, always the first to embrace his natural habitat, lumbered happily towards a nearby pond, while Ampharos stretched her long neck, her wool giving her a fluffy appearance.
Mismagius, Houndoom, and Togepi, each with their own distinct needs, found their comfort in the surrounding area. Eevee and Celebi took care of Togepi, making sure she didn't wander far off.
Taking out my belongings, I called out, unpacking our travel bags, "Alright, everyone, let's take a break! Time for some grub!"
The Pokémon cheered, and Celebi zipped around excitedly as I distributed Pokémon food and fresh berries. Moments like these, surrounded by my loyal companions, made the journey worthwhile.
That and I have no trainers capturing any Pokémon I wanted ahead of me. I called out, pulling out a small portable stove to heat some instant noodles for myself, alongside the custom blends of Pokémon food I'd meticulously prepared, "Alright, everyone! Lunch is almost ready!"
The aroma of garlic and savory broth soon filled the air. Pikachu nudged my cheek, emitting a soft sound as if reminding me to save some for him, "Pika! (What about me!)"
I chuckled, scratching behind his ears as I said softly, "Don't worry, buddy, I've got your special energy cubes ready."
He purred, a sound like crinkling static, and settled back onto my shoulder, occasionally sending a jolt of comforting warmth through my neck. Eevee gave a small bark of agreement, her tail wagging.
As we were about to dig in, a figure emerged from the trees, striding purposefully into our clearing. He was tall, with spiky blond hair that seemed to defy gravity, and an intense, almost bored expression on his face.
His clothes were crisp, clean, bearing the distinct mark of a Sinnoh region trainer – a sharp, modern style. He carried himself with an undeniable aura of confidence, the kind that only comes from repeated victories.
His voice is surprisingly deep, almost a monotone, despite being young, as he said respectfully, "Excuse me. I couldn't help but notice... a Pikachu."
His gaze settled on my shoulder, a flicker of something that looked like interest, perhaps even a challenge, sparked in his striking blue eyes. He reached for a Poké Ball at his belt, a she introduced himself, "My name is Volkner. Ace Trainer from Sinnoh. And I happen to have a Pikachu of my own. I've been looking for a worthy opponent for him, and yours... it looks like it might offer a decent challenge."
My eyebrows rose slightly. Volkner, huh? The name rang a bell.
Wasn't he a future Gym Leader? I guess he must be an Ace Trainer with how young he is, almost 2 or 3 years older than me.
Either way, he clearly wasn't just any regular trainer. His confidence bordered on arrogance, but it was backed by genuine power; I could feel it radiating off him.
And he wanted a Pikachu vs. Pikachu battle. I glanced at my own Pikachu. He'd tensed, his ears perked up, a low buzz emanating from his cheeks.
He met my gaze, and I saw the familiar, unwavering determination there. He wasn't just my partner; his my ace, the cornerstone of my main team, a Pokémon that had faced down legends and emerged victorious.
Volkner might be strong, but he had no idea what he was challenging. A small smile touched my lips. I replied, standing up slowly, "Azure Sky. And yes, this is my partner, Pikachu. He's always ready for a good battle."
My other Pokémon, sensing the shift in atmosphere, began to stir. Houndoom let out a low growl, but I gave it a calming hand signal.
Volkner's eyes widened almost imperceptibly, a hint of genuine interest now replacing the boredom. He murmured, pulling out a Poké Ball as he said excitedly, "Excellent! Let's make it a one-on-one. Just our two Pikachu. What do you say?"
I replied, a quiet confidence in my voice, turning to eye my partner, "I say you're in for a surprise. Pikachu?"
My partner jumped from my shoulder, landing lightly on the grassy ground, crackling with barely contained energy. He didn't flex or boast; he simply stood there, a small, vibrant force of nature, his gaze locked onto Volkner.
Volkner released his own Pikachu. It was a fine specimen, undeniably strong, with a robust build and a confident stance.
It crackled with static, its cheeks sparking, ready for action. Compared to my Pikachu, who carried himself with a quiet, almost ancient wisdom, Volkner's Pikachu seemed more overtly powerful, a raw, untamed force.
Volkner commanded, without even waiting for a referee or formal start, "Let's do this, buddy! Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!"
He was eager, impatient. Volkner's Pikachu wasted no time, gathering a massive amount of electricity. The air around it shimmered with blue light, and a thick, arcing bolt of pure electrical energy shot towards my Pikachu.
*Zzzz*
It was fast, powerful, and aimed directly at the heart. But my Pikachu didn't even flinch as it absorbed the Thunderbolt, shocking Volkner.
Lightning Rod Ability for the win. I called out, my voice calm, "Pikachu, time to battle. Extreme Speed!"
*Zoooom*
In a blur of yellow, my Pikachu was gone. Volkner's eyes flickered, surprised.
His Pikachu looked slightly bewildered. Who wouldn't be seeing a Pikachu use Extreme Speed of all things and being able to learn it in the first place?
My Pikachu reappeared, not attacking, but strategically positioned on a higher rock formation behind Volkner's Pikachu. He was faster, far more agile than Volkner could have anticipated.
This wasn't just about raw power; it was about precision, timing, and an intimate understanding of the battlefield.
Volkner conceded, though his expression remained mostly impassive, "Impressive speed. Pikachu, Iron Tail, target the rock!"
Volkner's Pikachu spun, its tail glowing with metallic energy, and slammed it down with incredible force onto the rock my Pikachu was perched on. The rock shattered, fragments flying, but I focused on the battle.
*CRACK*
But by then, I had already made my move. I countered, my voice sharp, "Pikachu! Agility, then Electro Ball!"
Before the first fragment of rock hit the ground, my Pikachu was already moving ahead. He darted through the air, weaving like a phantom, the destroyed rock merely an obstacle to be bypassed.
As he moved, a sphere of crackling blue electricity began to form between his tiny paws, growing rapidly. It was an Electro Ball, but not just any Electro Ball.
This one pulsed with an intense, concentrated power, a culmination of years of training and perfected technique. The sphere launched, not straight, but with a slight curve, anticipating Volkner's Pikachu's next move.
Volkner, seeing the sheer power of the attack, snapped as he ordered, "Dodge it, then use Volt Tackle into Iron Tail!"
*BOOOM*
Volkner's Pikachu tried. It was fast, no doubt, but my Pikachu's Electro Ball had been launched with a trajectory that boxed it in. It had to commit to a direction, and once it did, the Electro Ball was already there.
It struck Volkner's Pikachu squarely in the chest, a blinding flash of blue energy and a concussive boom that rippled through the clearing. Volkner's Pikachu cried out, thrown back by the force of the blast interrupted his attack, "Pika!!"
*Thud*
It landed hard, skidding across the grass, smoke rising from its fur. Its eyes were glazed, but it struggled to push itself up, determination warring with pain.
It was a tough Pokémon, I'd give Volkner that. Volkner urged again, his voice now laced with urgency, a hint of desperation starting to creep in, "Volt Tackle to Mega Punch!"
Volkner's Pikachu, still dazed, tried to charge. It shimmered with yellow electricity, a powerful tackle enveloped in a dangerous aura.
But its movements were sluggish, uncoordinated. It stumbled, barely managing to hold its form as it charged through, intending to change the environment by destroying it, possibly to disorient my partner.
My Pikachu, meanwhile, was already positioned. He seemed to know, instinctively, that this was the moment.
He didn't wait for my command, a testament to our years of shared experience. He gathered himself, eyes narrowed in focus. I called just to affirm the next step, "Pikachu, Extreme Speed into Thunder Punch!"
*SMASH*
My Pikachu zoomed ahead, landing a punch to the face using Thunder Punch. The effect was immediate.
Volkner's Pikachu, already wobbly from the Electro Ball, seized up from the pain of Thunder Punch + Extreme Speed. It collapsed onto the ground, the Volt Tackle fading into nothing, ending it before it could do anything.
*Thud*
My Pikachu didn't pause. He launched himself forward, a yellow streak across the clearing, his body crackling with speed.
This wasn't a reckless charge; it was a demonstration of honed precision. He hit Volkner's weakened Pikachu with a final, decisive Extreme Speed.
*SMACK*
The impact was swift and clean. Volkner's Pikachu, already weakened and now utterly vulnerable, was sent skidding backwards again, coming to a halt at Volkner's feet.
Its eyes were spirals, its small body utterly still. I declared, knowing it was over, "Pikachu is unable to battle!"
The silence that followed was thick, broken only by the chirping of distant Pokémon. Volkner stood frozen for a moment, his perfect facade of boredom utterly shattered, replaced by a look of genuine shock.
He stared at his unconscious Pikachu, then slowly lifted his gaze to mine. He muttered, his voice barely a whisper, "Impossible. That was... a complete rout. My Pikachu is strong. My Pikachu has faced Elite Ace Trainers. That was... so one-sided."
My Pikachu, having finished the battle, simply walked back to me, tail held high but without an ounce of arrogance. He jumped onto my shoulder, nuzzling my cheek, a silent 'good job' passing between us.
His breathing was barely labored; he'd expended hardly any energy. My other Pokémon were watching, a mix of awe and quiet pride on their faces. It reminded them why Pikachu is always out and why I'm always calm with my partner on my side.
Even Togepi let out a delighted squeal. Celebi, who had been resting on a nearby branch, let out a soft, melodious hum, circling my Pikachu once as if in silent congratulation.
He pulled out a Poké Ball, returning his Pikachu with a soft beam. He looked at me, a new light in his eyes – not boredom, not challenge, but respect. Volkner said, finally bending down to retrieve his Pokémon, "Your Pikachu... It's on another level. I apologize for my presumptuousness. I've never seen such speed, such control. It was flawless."
I explained, scratching my partner's head in a proud tone, letting Volkner listen intently, "My Pikachu and I have been through a lot. He's not just strong; he's smart, adaptable, and we communicate almost without words. He's my oldest friend, and we've refined our techniques over countless battles."
Volkner nodded slowly, absorbing my words. He echoed as he said, stunned, "Refined… Yes, that's the word. It wasn't just power; it was art."
He offered a hand, which I shook. His grip was firm. He gave a small, genuine smile as he said excitedly, "Thank you for the lesson, Azure. I'll remember this. Perhaps our paths will cross again. I'd like to see more of what you and your team are capable of."
I replied, a friendly warmth filling me, "Maybe so."
It was rare to meet trainers who could take such a decisive loss with such grace. It spoke volumes about Volkner's character.
He gave a slight bow, then turned and strode back into the trees, leaving the clearing just as quiet as it had been before his arrival, save for the hum of the forest and the gentle rumbles of my happily fed Pokémon.
I chuckled, turning back to my still-warm instant noodles, "Well, that was certainly an exciting lunch break, wasn't it, guys?"
My Pokémon responded with a chorus of happy noises, and Pikachu rubbed his head against my ear. The encounter with Volkner, though brief, left me with a renewed sense of purpose and pride.
It was a powerful reminder of how far my Pikachu and I had come and how formidable our bond truly was. Blackthorn City, and whatever challenges lay beyond, now felt a little less daunting, knowing I had such an incredible, irreplaceable partner by my side, and an amazing team to back us up.
But it's also a reminder why I don't use my partner in Gym Battles. Because unless the Gym Leader fights us at full strength, there's truly no growth for my main team to grow.
Still, these instant noodles are good. With a full belly and a light heart, we packed up our things, ready to continue our journey, stronger than ever.
