Pokemon Battle System: I Reincarnated As A Charmander

Chapter 133: Chapter 133: Beginner Assessment

When Moka saw Julian send out Teddiursa, he immediately concluded that Julian's strength could not possibly be at the Two-Star Silver Rank level, equivalent to the sixth floor of the Battle Tower. At best, he seemed comparable to the fourth-floor standards.

Moka had initially thought Julian must be quite powerful, only to be greatly disappointed by this revelation. Even if he defeated Julian now, there would be no sense of accomplishment due to their significant gap in abilities.

Teddiursa, while not inherently weak, was clearly unsuited for the sixth floor of the Battle Tower where trainers typically field very strong Pokemon. Encounter with juvenile-stage Pokemon like Teddiursa is rare here.

Before evolving, Teddiursa serves more as a pet, only showcasing its true potential post-evolution. Sending out a Teddiursa now felt almost comical.

Julian also felt somewhat awkward; his Teddiursa hadn't evolved yet and couldn't even match up against Charmeleon, let alone Umbreon. However, with only two Pokemon under his belt and no third captured, he didn't have much choice.

As Teddiursa entered the arena, it appeared slightly bewildered but quickly emitted a determined battle cry upon spotting Umbreon.

"Umbreon, use Bite." Moka decided not to waste time and immediately commanded Umbreon to attack using Bite.

"Teddiursa, use Fury Swipes," Julian commanded. Despite feeling unlikely to win, he knew it was crucial to give his all in every battle.

Umbreon swiftly charged towards Teddiursa. With its larger stature compared to Teddiursa, Umbreon resembled a giant beast pouncing on its prey, aiming for a swift bite.

Teddiursa extended its claws and started swiping wildly, but against Umbreon's remarkable defense, these attacks felt like mere tickles, having no noticeable effect.

Similar to Charmeleon earlier, once Teddiursa was bitten, it quickly lost its fighting ability, bringing the battle to an end.

The match concluded too swiftly, making Julian seem like a clown, effortlessly defeated by Moka without any chance to retaliate.

Julian began questioning his abilities. Was he truly that weak? He recalled being able to hold his own against beginner Trainers back in Falcon City, suggesting his strength shouldn't be so inferior.

Despite his Charmeleon's significant growth, why did they still lose so easily?

Moka approached Julian and said, "You overrestimated your capabilities before challenging the sixth floor. Luckily, you encountered me; I won't mock you. My advice is to gradually start from the fourth floor."

Moka maintained a positive mindset and refrained from mocking Julian; otherwise, he wouldn't have persistently challenged Kalia.

Someone else might have mercilessly ridiculed Julian for challenging the sixth-floor Trainers without sufficient strength.

"The gap is indeed too wide; I was quite naive," Julian chuckled bitterly, realizing his mistake. He had underestimated Kalia's progress, comparing her to her strength from a month ago. Little did he expect that within just one month, Kalia would become so formidable.

Moka defeated him effortlessly, yet Moka himself lost to Kalia. The thought of how strong Kalia must be now was mind-boggling.

At this moment, Kalia remained unaware of Julian's swift defeat but knew he likely didn't possess the required strength for the sixth floor, anticipating it would be a setback for him.

Evening approached at the Pokemon Library.

"Kalia, what exactly is your true strength?" Julian asked curiously. He now understood his own level, approximately Red Star 3, significantly below Silver Rank. While he could hold steady on the fourth floor, he lacked the power for the fifth.

Julian now understood the strength levels within the Battle Tower. The sixth floor required a comprehensive power equivalent to Two-Star Silver Rank, and Kalia's prowess on that level suggested she was likely close to Three-Star Silver Rank.

"I'm not entirely sure, but I estimate my Charmeleon has reached Three-Star Silver Rank, with overall capabilities nearing Two-Star Silver," Kalia replied.

"What happened? Did you go to the sixth floor today and lose?" Seeing Julian rush over, Kalia sensed he must have faced some setback.

"Yes, I didn't realize how weak I truly am. I plan to return to Falcon City first and obtain my third badge," Julian nodded, acknowledging his recent encounters had inflated his self-perception. This experience helped him regain a more realistic mindset.

Relieved that Julian wasn't overly disheartened, Kalia advised, "Once you get your third badge, upon returning, consider becoming a floor guardian like me. It may be tiring, but it earns money and greatly aids in improving your Pokemon's strength."

"Sure, I understand," Julian agreed. Reflecting on his battle with Moka earlier, losing meant he had to pay two hundred Alliance Coins—a cost too high for someone aspiring to be a challenger.

Time flew by, and soon it had been a week.

After Vulpix evolved into Ninetales, it also joined the battles in the Battle Tower. Initially, there were some challenges as Ninetales struggled with the intense combat, but Pokemon adapt quickly, and it soon became accustomed to the battles.

Now, Ninetales could be considered a well-experienced Pokémon, possessing a solid foundation for combat.

The contract at the Battle Tower expired yesterday, and all rewards were settled accordingly. Consequently, Kalia no longer needed to stay at the Battle Tower.

As Lian prepared to leave, he felt a sense of reluctance, knowing that this day would eventually come. In a few days, they would head to the Pokémon Academy, where he would participate as an external competitor in their tournament.

From now on, obtaining such high Combat Points daily might not be feasible anymore. Meeting Moka was indeed one of his luckiest encounters.

With the Battle Tower duties concluded yesterday, today marked Kalia's scheduled assessment for becoming a beginner Trainer. Given her current strength, passing the exam should be quite straightforward, as she had already surpassed the level required for a beginner Trainer long ago.

The beginner Trainer assessments are centrally organized and conducted once a month. However, since many Trainers complete their exams in Falcon City, only a handful participated in Ruby City this month. Including Kalia, there were just five candidates.

The examination was overseen by a mid-level Trainer from the League, considering the small number of participants, it would be a straightforward assessment.

Becoming a beginner Trainer is relatively easy, with large numbers achieving this level each year. Only the exams for mid-level Trainers and above present significant challenges.

At the Pokémon Center.

Including Kalia, there were five aspiring Trainers - three boys and two girls, all gathered in the main hall as sunlight streamed through the windows.

"Only five participants?" The mid-level Trainer overseeing the exam appeared to be in his early twenties, which was considered late to achieve that rank.

Typically, becoming a mid-level Trainer after reaching adulthood is more common. According to standard regulations, individuals can receive their first Pokémon at age ten, officially starting their journey as novice Trainers.

With eight years typically available, although some may start later, most have at least five to six years of experience. Within this time frame, if one diligently trains their Pokémon, they should ideally earn four or five badges.

"Yes," replied the nurse from the Pokémon Center, who served as the assistant for the exam. As part of the League, the Pokémon Centers naturally support its activities.

"My name is Jane; you can call me Teacher Jane. Let's not waste any time; the sooner we begin, the quicker it will be over. I trust you're all well-prepared before coming here." Without further ado, Teacher Jane promptly announced the commencement of the examination.
