Pokemon Battle System: I Reincarnated As A Charmander

Chapter 136: Chapter 136: Just Short of Victory

Seeing Snorlax fall asleep, Teacher Jane smiled, knowing that the true battle was about to begin.

Undoubtedly, Snorlax had used the Rest move. However, unlike other Pokemon, Snorlax retains combat capabilities even while sleeping due to its ability to learn Sleep Talk, making it a standard feature for Snorlax battles.

Lian wasn't surprised when Snorlax lay down to sleep; the Rest move is essential for any Snorlax. Without it, one would suspect it's not genuine.

He felt slightly disappointed though, as Snorlax went to sleep too quickly. After hitting only once with Flamethrower, Snorlax dozed off, resulting in a significant loss of potential Combat Points.

The sleeping Snorlax snored loudly, seemingly unlikely to wake up soon. However, Lian remained vigilant and continued running after releasing his second Flamethrower.

He also instructed Grovyle to keep moving without easily executing moves. This time, he couldn't afford any mistakes from Grovyle that might lower their score.

As expected, in the next moment, Snorlax stood up again. However, its eyes remained closed since it was still asleep. The sudden movement was due to Sleep Talk, allowing Snorlax to use moves even while unconscious. What move would be unleashed depended on luck, as Snorlax had no control.

A sleeping Snorlax using Sleep Talk is quite formidable because, in this state, its attacks become more unpredictable and aggressive.

In the following second, despite its massive size, Snorlax unexpectedly started running—an action typically impossible for it when awake but achievable during Sleep Talk.

Once mobile, Snorlax became truly terrifying. No longer a stationary target, although unconscious, it seemed aware of Lian and Grovyle's positions. With one swift motion, it aimed a punch directly at Grovyle.

Had Lian not instructed Grovyle to keep moving instead of standing still to attack, they likely would have been struck by Snorlax's punch.

Soon, Snorlax began chasing Grovyle relentlessly, throwing wild punches left and right. Fortunately, Grovyle's speed allowed it to maintain distance effectively.

Still quite clumsy.

Lian observed Snorlax's frenzied attacks, recognizing it as the Flail move. The stronger its effect becomes as its stamina decreases, escalating to increasingly wild and intense strikes towards the end.

However, ineffective moves that fail to hit serve no purpose. While Grovyle was being pursued, Lian unleashed Flamethrower for the third time, aiming to rapidly deplete Snorlax's stamina. This would ensure a significant gain in Combat Points upon victory.

Despite Snorlax starting to move, dodging Lian's Flamethrower remained impossible. The scorching flames accurately struck Snorlax, continuously impacting and burning its body. Even with its high Special Defense, Snorlax sustained considerable damage.

Although not yet fully awake, Lian anticipated that once conscious, Snorlax would likely use Rest again, followed by Sleep Talk.

This exemplified Snorlax's strength: if you couldn't defeat it outright, after using Rest to recover, its Sleep Talk attacks during slumber become even more ferocious than usual.

Lian instructed Grovyle to keep running and avoid attacking. With Grovyle's distraction, Lian could effortlessly unleash Flamethrower. Without Grovyle's support, maintaining distance would still be manageable but slightly more challenging.

Standing his ground and continuously outputting attacks felt much more comfortable. It allowed him to focus solely on unleashing moves without worrying about incoming threats.

Typically, normal sleep states wouldn't last too long, but Snorlax is inherently known for its love of sleeping. Consequently, it wasn't until Lian released Flamethrower for the third time that Snorlax finally woke up.

By this point, it was quite late. As Snorlax opened its eyes, they appeared half-closed, giving off a groggy impression.

Lian didn't intentionally wait for Snorlax to fall asleep again; it seemed pointless, as the examiner might lose patience and abruptly halt the match, leaving Lian devastated.

He noticed Teacher Jane growing visibly impatient nearby, almost ready to call a stop to the battle. The other Trainers had been waiting for quite some time.

"All right, there's no point continuing this battle; let's stop here," Teacher Jane interjected. Upon noticing the numerous burn marks on Snorlax after waking up, she sensed signs of potential defeat. Quickly halting the match, it would be too embarrassing if a novice Trainer's Pokemon managed to overcome her Snorlax.

However, it was already too late. Lian had unleashed Flamethrower, and intense flames once again engulfed Snorlax.

In the next moment, Snorlax collapsed dramatically, not merely falling asleep but genuinely losing its fighting ability and slipping into unconsciousness.

"Cough cough."

Teacher Jane's expression turned grim as her Snorlax unexpectedly lost, defeated by a Special attack—this seemed utterly unbelievable.

It was noteworthy that his Snorlax had previously withstood five or six Flamethrowers from a Charizard without losing combat capability. Yet now, Charmeleon's single Flamethrower proved overwhelming—an illogical outcome indeed.

"Alright, Kalia has passed." Teacher Jane swiftly announced the result, then recalled Snorlax and replaced it with another Pokémon, an Ursaring.

Seeing Ursaring, the other Trainers nearly broke down crying, wondering why they had defeated Snorlax when they were well-prepared to handle it.

Now with Ursaring on the field, its speed was significantly faster than Snorlax's sluggish pace, making it a fiercely aggressive Pokemon.

Kalia recalled her Charmeleon and Grovyle, feeling somewhat awkward. Had she inadvertently increased the difficulty? She hoped no one else would fail to last 30 seconds now.

"Ten seconds will suffice," Teacher Jane reassured them, recognizing that Ursaring posed a greater challenge compared to Snorlax, thus lowering the requirement.

Time passed swiftly, and soon the practical exam concluded. In the end, only three Trainers passed, while the rest would have to wait until next month to reapply.

As expected, Kalia would likely become a beginner trainer tomorrow, receiving the Pokemon League's Beginner Trainer Certificate. From then on, she'd officially be recognized as a beginner trainer, entitled to certain benefits from the League.

Additionally, achieving this status allowed her to challenge Silver Rank Gyms.

Later that evening, within the system space.

Lian reviewed today's combat ratings. Despite being two against one with Grovyle and himself versus a Snorlax, the system still acknowledged it as a valid battle.

The combat rating was quite satisfying for Lian, rewarding him with 3,124 Combat Points. Considering this was only for defeating a single Pokemon, it was substantial. If not for his decisive use of Flamethrower at the end, without trying to greedily farm more points, he might not have achieved over three thousand Combat Points.

Currently, Lian's total Combat Points reached 25,713, accumulated over recent days. However, he was still slightly short of the required amount to maximize his Special Attack ability value to the limit of 60+.

"Just a little more needed; should be enough by tomorrow," Lian murmured, gazing at his current Combat Point balance.
