Chapter 7: Obstacle before the journey?
"Ok, I will take your pokemon for few moments,"
Said the nurse before taking the unconscious charmander from Max.
Worried, Max walked and slumped on the waiting chair around the pokemon centre.
Reina walked and sat next to him.
"Don't worry, I believe she will be ok," She said, putting a reassuring hand at his shoulder.
Hugo, stood there, still in shock, holding his pokeball.
Had it been critical hit... Would Froakie had survived?
The thought alone disturbed him, unconsciously, he had begun to clenched the pokeball on his hand.
Max, sat there in silence, thinking back to the field, the backlash charmander felt.. Was it really...
"Your Charmander is going through it's awakening,"
A voice echoed through the pokemon centre.
"That voice!, could it be! Master?"
Hugo turned around immediately, as expected he was greeted with the familiar face of his Master, Blue Oak, the legendary trainer.
"Yo!" said Blue with a smile.
Max eyes widened, meeting with Blue was the last thing he expected, sure he expected to meet him sooner or later as he is the Gym leader of Viridian City, but not this soon.
"Long time no see, Max" Blue said, waving his hands towards Max.
So Max from this world is supposed to be in familiar term with Blue? I mean sure, since he is in such good term with Prof. Oak, that much is to be expected, but he was still surprised nonetheless.
"M.. Master, you know this boy?"
"Of course i do, he is like a little brother to me!"
"LITTLE BROTHER!! "
Both Hugo and Reina shouted in union. Just who the hell is this kid?
Max himself was surprised, little brother? Familiar term was one thing but, little brother!
"Seriously though Max, My Sister was really sad you know, since her beloved little brother went out on his journey without even meeting her,"
Max looked away, anyway but not at Blue, what was he supposed to say? He doesn't have a single memory of this Max of this world.
"Uhh... S.. sorry, I.. I guess I should apologize to her,"
Blue chuckled at his words, "Yea you probably should, she would be delighted."
Both Hugo and Reina had calmed down by now, they were still surprised by how casually they were talking but still...
"Anyway, W... What do you mean by awakening?"
Max asked, trying to divert the topic away from the familiar subject.
"Awakening... Oh yea, your charmander is indeed going through awakening,"
Blue's expression had now gotten serious as he spoke with his voice lowered.
Nervousness washed over Max at Blue's words, awakening? Was it a gold thing?
"Uhmm...What's awakening?"
He asked with shaky and nervous voice.
Blue smiled gently and begun to explain.
In a summery, awakening is basically a phenomenon that every pokemon goes through to bring out their latent potential, that is, their ability.
The battle against Froakie served as the catalyst for the awakening, and the backlash Charmander felt? It was due to it's newly obtained ability, Solar power.
An ability that boosts all special attacks by 1.5x at the cost of 1/8 hp after each turn during strong sunlight.
"But doesn't Solar power works only on harsh sunlight?"
Blue nods at Max's question,
"Under normal circumstances, yes,"
He continued, "but in awakening phase even ability that doesn't normally works will work as to mark their unlocking, hence the effects of Solar power despite normal climate, but that's only one time thing, from next time it will definitely need strong sunlight to function."
So basically a first time pass,
Blue explained further and after a while they ate together (Blue's treat ofc), and some persuasion later, Max Finally talked with Daisy and after some apology she forgived him, even got emotional a little bit, also his mother, who although emotional, supported him.
Finally it's time for bed.
Max layed on his bed, the pokemon centre was almost filled, so was the rooms around him.
Blue returned to his gym, along with Hugo who followed him back, turns out Hugo was the gym trainer of the Viridian City Gym.
His gaze turned around the bed besides him, where Reina was sleep soundly, her little brother Rio had already returned back to home. She was a new trainer as well who just recently started her journey.
Sigh, it's sure been a day.
His thoughts drifted back to the day, it was a long day, just this morning he left his house for the journey and now he was laying in the bed.
The first gym... Which one is it gonna be though? Viridian or Pewter? Brock or Blue?
And what about his team, how should he make his team... Sigh, it's about time, he closes his eyes and drifts to sleep.
In the morning, Max picks up his charmander from Nurse joy, thankfully it was ok and had no serious injury and back to its energetic self.
He had his breakfast together with Charmander and left the Pokemon centre for the Viridian City gym.
Reina seems to have already left, she must be eager to start her journey or have something else to deal with.
The imposing building of gym stood tall in front of him, the tall white concrete walls towering over him with brown roof sat atop it.
The went through the blue glass doors and wandered his gaze throughout the gym.
The gym was big, the moment he entered he was greeted by a man, that gym dude.
"Hello, champ in the making!"
The guy then proceeded to explain the gym, it seems challanger had to go through the gym challange, where they would have to complete the challenge as well as defeat the gym trainers in a single try, withdraw equals fail and will have to redo the trail.
"Uhm... I am not here for challenge, at least not for now, I am here to meet the leader actually,"
The gym guy was surprised at tha, but smiled nonetheless.
"Ahh... The Gym leader, please wait here if that's all you seek, May I know your name gentlemen,"
"Max... Max Jesper!"
With a nod, the gym guy heads towards a wall, calls through the telephone and finally puts it down, heading back to Max.
"The gym leader is fine with meeting you, please follow this path,"
The gym guy beckons, and starts leading the way, a path completely different then the challenge one, throughout the way he suggests Max to behave well as this gym leader is known for... Well not so good attitude.
So, being respectful and not getting on his nerves might be the best decision.
Another door opens, and in the middle of room stood Blue, and Hugk besides him.
"Max, what happened? Are you not taking the gym challenge?"
Blue said as he approached Max and draps one arm around his shoulder, his voice held small trace of concern, wondering if yesterday's match did some negative impact on him.
The gym guy was surprised at the closeness, but decided not to insert his nose and leaved with a small bow.
"No, it's nothing like what you think,"
"Then?"
Blue curiosity kept rising with each words of Max, if it's not what he thought then what it was? Was he reading the situation wrongly?
Max, stayed silent for a while, wondering how should he phrase it, what word should he go with, then finally with a sigh, he continues.
"Actually, I want to face you to your full power,"
"Full power?" Blue said surprised. "But you don't even have a single badge for that, and you still have a long way to go."
"Yes, that's exactly why, there is no order of how one can do the gym challenges right, that's why, I want to defeat every single gym and take you as my final obstacle before the Pokemon league."
Max said, clenching his fist with excitement. Blue was a champion level trainer, taking him on with his weaker Pokemons will be a waste of potential, what's better then to face a champion level trainer before the Pokemon league itself.
And also another reason was Hugo, if he lost to him who was merely a gym trainer then there was no hope of him defeating the leader now, that will also buy him time to train and form a proper team. He wasn't stupid enough to take his Pokemons with a under leveled Pidgey and Charmander, he isn't Ash.
A small smile crept on Blue's face, "if that's the case, then challenge accepted."
He said as he softly bumped his fist in Max's chest. "I will wait for you, defeat every gym leader and face me, i won't hold back."
Max smiles softly and nods.
Hugo was surprised at their dynamics, they really do went along pretty well.
"So... If I had taken you right now... Which Pokemons would you have fought me with?"
Max asked, he was curious alright, he wanted to know if he even stood slightly a chance.
A small smirk crept on Blue's face, "So you wanna know eh? Maybe... Machop and pidgey."
"So, those two huh..." He began to ponder, if he actually did challenged the gym, would he have really stood a chance? The chances were really slim.
Max Nodded and after some exchanges, he left the gym, Blue sighed and take his seat on the couch.
"Master, do you really think he can go that far? Sure he have luck and maybe bit of talent, but he have little to no experience,"
Hugo's question didn't surprised Blue as he already saw that coming, he couldn't help but smile, remembering back to 3 years before when 3 naive kids with no experience got out on journey, now look where they are.
"Hugo, I don't think I can teach you anything anymore, matter of fact, I don't even know why you are here to begin with,"
"M-Master, don't talk like that, you taught me alot of things, and I am forever grateful for that, and I believe there are still many things I can learn from you."
Hugo, born in Kalos, 3 years ago when he just turned 11, he heard a news about a kid who was around the same age as him became the Champion, that was Blue, even though his throne was later taken by Red, his rival, within few moments, the impact he had left on him was high.
He waited a year for that, and chose Froakie, a water Pokemon just like his role model, and it was around that time he had heard the champion Red have left the throne of Kanto, would Blue take it back? Apparently no, Blue refused to take that seat back and decided to become the gym leader and the throne went back to Lance.
Something about Blue not "choosing" to become Champion had won him over, and he looked up to him even more.
Finally decided, a year and half late, i.e 6 months prior, he flew to Kanto, decided to walk on the footsteps of Blue, he had decided to train under him.
"I believe it's about time you went out in your own journey,"
"B-But Master-,"
Blue stood up and placed his hands on Hugo's shoulder.
"I know, but I believe it's the best time for you to start, Max and... Well, that girl, all three of you can start your journey together, become rivals and push each other to their up most limits."
Hugo, who never said no to any of his master Wishes found himself nodding, there was some truth in his words, if he needed to start then ut should be this time too.
Finally with a firm resolve he nods.
"Ok master, But that spoiled brother of your's can never defeat me though, and I will form team stronger then ever and finally, surpass you too."
Blue nodded with a smile, his pupil was finally off his ass now.
______________
Max was on his way, if he was gonna take on Brock then there was one Pokemon he had to have on his team, excited he was about to make his way, but just then a voice calls out to him.
"Max! Stop!"
He turned around, facing towards the voice, it was Reina, running towards him.
She had her blond hair tied in a pony tail, a simple white t-shirt with black jacket, long jeans and black shoes. She had her sidebag tied around her left side.
She finally stopped in front of him, breathing heavily, she took a long breath and with pokeball in front of her, she said with her voice resolute.
"I Challenge you to a Pokemon battle!"
