The competition was packed with participants. Chris had to play five or six rounds to reach the finals, but his opponents were mostly rookies. He let his Tyrunt take the stage and win effortlessly each time.
No one could quite pinpoint the source of their enthusiasm—perhaps it was the allure of the rewards, even though no one knew what the prize actually was.
In the final round, the opponent standing before Chris was no surprise—it was Wally.
"Chris, I knew my final opponent would be you!" Wally declared, his eyes gleaming with excitement and determination. He had longed for this moment. "I've wanted to battle you for so long, but the opportunity never came."
"I thought so too," Chris replied calmly, plucking a Poké Ball from his belt.
Chris had observed all of Wally's battles earlier and was genuinely impressed by his strength. The surrounding audience buzzed with anticipation. It was evident to everyone that Chris and Wally stood head and shoulders above the rest. The crowd couldn't wait to witness this clash of titans.
"Trainers, pay attention!" the captain warned, stepping forward as the referee. "Do not use large-scale destructive moves, and be careful not to damage the ship. The battle is restricted to the designated battlefield."
Both Chris and Wally nodded in acknowledgment.
"The rules are simple," the captain continued. "Each trainer may use only one Pokémon. The first Pokémon to lose the ability to battle will determine the outcome."
Although the captain seemed less than professional, the crowd didn't mind. Their focus was on the battle that was about to unfold.
Chris and Wally each grabbed a Poké Ball and threw them into the air. The capsules burst open, releasing two Pokémon onto the battlefield.
Wally's Pokémon was a Gallade, Level 50.
"Chris, when I first started my journey as a Trainer, you saw me catch Ralts. Today, I'm fighting with Gallade to show you how much we've grown together!" Wally declared proudly. His voice carried beyond Chris, reaching his parents in the crowd.
Wally's parents had been strongly opposed to his dream of becoming a Trainer, fearing for his frail health. Now, Wally wanted to prove to them—through action—that he could forge his own path as a capable Trainer.
"It's evolved into Gallade," Chris said with a small laugh.
Ralts has two evolutionary paths: Gardevoir and Gallade. While neither is inherently stronger, they excel in different areas. Gardevoir specializes in special attacks, whereas Gallade shines in physical attacks.
However, if these two were to face each other, Gardevoir would hold the advantage. With its dual Psychic and Fairy typing, Gardevoir resists Psychic moves and takes only a quarter of the damage from Fighting moves, granting it double resistance. Gallade, being part Fighting Type, lacks this resistance and is vulnerable to Fairy moves.
And, as luck would have it, Chris's chosen Pokémon was Gardevoir.
"Let's settle this!" Chris declared. "Shiny Gardevoir, take the stage!"
A brilliant light flashed as Gardevoir emerged, her shimmering coat eliciting gasps of awe from the audience. Many spectators immediately pulled out their phones to capture the sight of the rare Shiny Pokémon.
Chris wasn't surprised by their reaction. Even in the Pokémon world, Shiny Pokémon were an extraordinary rarity. Trainers who managed to catch one were widely celebrated, and Gardevoir was a particularly beloved Pokémon. A Shiny Gardevoir only added to her mystique.
With both Pokémon ready, the captain raised his hand. "Let the battle begin!"
"Gallade, use Swords Dance!" Wally shouted, taking the initiative.
Gallade struck a stance, folding its arms as its energy flared. Its attack power rose significantly, setting the stage for a fierce confrontation.
Chris was quick to issue his first command. "Gardevoir, Psychic!"
"Garde!"
Gardevoir placed her hands on her chest, her gaze locked firmly on Gallade. With a graceful motion, she pressed her hands downward.
An invisible force descended upon Gallade from above, creating a crushing mental pressure.
Psychic moves are among the hardest to defend against, even for other Psychic-type Pokémon.
Gallade could feel the oppressive mental energy bearing down on him, but his psychic abilities were far inferior to Gardevoir's. He could do little but brace his body against the onslaught.
"Psycho Cut!" Wally commanded, trying to counter quickly.
Gallade reacted instantly, dashing across the battlefield with blade-like arms glowing in a strange, otherworldly hue. Psychic energy coursed along the blades as Gallade disappeared with a flash, using Teleport to reappear behind Gardevoir. His Psycho Cut was raised high, slashing downward toward the back of Gardevoir's neck as though cutting through space itself.
Gallade's combination of attack moves with Teleport often caught opponents off guard—it was a strategy that had worked countless times.
But this time, the Psycho Cut sliced through empty air.
Gardevoir had effortlessly avoided the attack by using Teleport herself.
Chris smirked. "What do you think? You're not the only one who can use Teleport in battle. And my Gardevoir's mastery of Teleport is far beyond yours."
When training at the power plant, Chris had drilled Gardevoir extensively—using Teleport hundreds of times each day. Her skill with it had been honed to perfection, almost to the level of instinct.
"Moonblast!" Chris commanded, intent on ending the battle.
Gardevoir raised her hands, and a sphere of soft pink energy began to form, shimmering with power. The moon hung high in the night sky, casting its glow over the battlefield. The lunar light amplified the energy of Gardevoir's attack, making the Moonblast even stronger.
Before Gallade could make another move, Gardevoir unleashed the attack. Pink energy swirled through the air, resembling a meteor shower as it sped toward Gallade.
"Gallade, use Teleport to dodge!" Wally shouted.
Gallade vanished in an instant, reappearing behind Gardevoir, aiming to turn his dodge into a surprise counterattack. He swung his blade-like arm, channeling all his strength into another Psycho Cut.
But Gardevoir was already prepared.
Gallade's Teleport patterns were no mystery to her—she had tracked his movement perfectly. As Gallade reappeared, Gardevoir activated Teleport again, repositioning herself and her Moonblast directly in Gallade's path.
The pink energy engulfed Gallade before he could react.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
The powerful Moonblast exploded against Gallade with a series of resounding impacts, lighting up the battlefield in a dazzling display of pink and silver energy.
