On the ground of the battlefield, a pink explosion slowly unfolded.
Although it was an explosion, it was astonishingly gentle, with all the energy concentrated on Gallade's body—none of it wasted.
Gardevoir descended gracefully, even in the midst of battle, her elegance unshaken.
As the pink smoke cleared, Gallade lay on the ground, his eyes spinning in defeat. The battle was over.
"Gallade is unable to battle! Gardevoir wins!" the captain announced. "The final winner is Chris!"
The Moonblast—a Fairy-type move—dealt double damage to Gallade, coupled with the power bonus from the shimmering crescent aura. On top of that, Gallade had already endured a move earlier.
It was no surprise that Gallade lost his ability to fight.
The audience erupted into applause, impressed by Gardevoir's performance. Yet, many spectators couldn't fully grasp the intricacies of the showdown.
As Gallade's fellow evolutionary line, Wally was able to perceive the gap in power between Gallade and Gardevoir.
"Teleport's precision crushed him," Wally murmured to himself.
Teleport is a Psychic-type move that is notoriously difficult to master. Few Pokémon can learn it naturally, and even fewer can wield it with true expertise.
Being able to teleport oneself is just the beginning. Successfully teleporting immobile or unresisting objects marks a trained user. But the true pinnacle is forcing a resistant opponent to move against their will.
And just now, Gardevoir had teleported Moonblast itself!
This meant Gardevoir manipulated a volatile energy attack mid-flight—a feat almost unimaginable.
Wally surmised that Chris's Gardevoir must be close to mastering this move entirely, even if she couldn't teleport an opposing Pokémon yet. By comparison, his own Gallade had barely scratched the surface of Teleport's potential.
Trying to defeat Gardevoir using a conventional strategy with Teleport?
It was like showing amateur skills in front of a seasoned master.
It was foolish.
Chris recalled Gardevoir into her Poké Ball.
Though he seldom battled with Gardevoir, it didn't mean her combat prowess was lacking. Far from it. On the rare occasions she fought, the "Queen of Psychic" lived up to her title.
Gardevoir would always remain an indispensable part of his main team.
With the battle concluded, the award ceremony began.
Riley and Wanda, two rookies, entered the arena together to present the prize to Chris.
"Benefactor, thank you for coming to my wedding with Riley. This is the gift we've prepared for this showdown," Wanda said, handing over a red box with both hands. She opened it gently, revealing a bead with a silky swirl of pink and green at its center.
It was unmistakably a Mega Evolution Stone.
Chris raised his eyebrows in surprise. What an unexpected bonus!
Thankfully, he had participated in this match—otherwise, he would've missed out on such a treasure.
"This is a stone I discovered while working on the Rusturf Tunnel," Wanda explained. "Mr. Steven told me it's a Gardevoirite—a Mega Evolution Stone specifically for Gardevoir. Since you have a Gardevoir, I believe it was destined for you."
A Mega Evolution Stone for Gardevoir!
Chris's mind raced as he imagined Gardevoir's majestic Mega Evolution form.
To him, this wasn't just a Mega Evolution Stone—it was like a custom-tailored gift from fate itself!
Chris took a deep breath, his determination flaring. He had to visit the Kalos region immediately!
"Thank you," he said earnestly.
He never would have guessed that his journey—initially meant to acquire a CD for Machamp's moves—would lead to such an incredible turn of events.
He carefully placed the Gardevoirite into his backpack, where its name appeared clearly as "Gardevoir Mega Evolution Stone."
Chris felt completely at ease now.
Although he emerged victorious in the final competition, the rewards weren't his alone. Wally also received a gift from his brother-in-law: Gallade's Mega Evolution Stone.
Chris could only marvel at Wally's good fortune. "Having a brother-in-law like that is truly impressive. I wouldn't mind one like Steven myself," he thought with a wry smile.
As the award ceremony wrapped up, so did the wedding celebrations.
The buffet remained available for guests, but everyone was free to retire to their rooms to rest.
As Chris blinked, the light and shadows in front of his eyes shifted. He suddenly found himself back in his dormitory. On his handheld console, the luxury cruise ship had transformed into a game map, with the protagonist standing in the cafeteria.
"You mean I don't have to stay in the game world all the time?" Chris exhaled in relief.
It was a relief indeed—especially with the nursery qualification exam coming up in twenty days. No need to take any special leave from his routine.
Chris picked up his phone and deleted a half-written message he'd been planning to send to Olivia, his counselor.
He glanced at the clock—it was only 9 p.m.
After a moment of consideration, Chris decided to turn his handheld back on. There was something he wanted to test.
He controlled the in-game character to walk to the deck and opened the map. The cities he could previously visit with Fly were now grayed out, indicating that Fly was unusable from the ship.
"So, I really can't leave the ship with Fly," Chris muttered, crossing his arms thoughtfully.
Searching further, he found no accessible spots to use Surf either.
"Does this mean I'm stuck on the ship for the rest of the trip?" Chris mused, stroking his chin.
In reality, there was a way to leave. Tomorrow morning, the ship's captain's old friend—Old Man Hatch—would use a speedboat to take passengers who didn't wish to continue traveling with Riley and Wally back to Slateport City. Chris could take that option if he wanted.
However, if he chose to disembark, there was no guarantee he'd be able to reboard later.
After weighing his options, Chris decided to stay.
Anyway, his ultimate destination was the Johto region, and he still had time to prepare for his upcoming exam. The in-game protagonist was also heading to Johto, so Chris could use the time to study while the game transitioned to its new map. By then, he'd be ready for the exam.
But that was a concern for tomorrow. Tonight, he could afford to relax and play for a while.
Now that the luxury cruise ship had fully transitioned into game mode, Chris could explore it freely, controlling the protagonist to run around the ship.
The ship, while massive in real life, felt surprisingly small in the game.
Chris guided his character through various rooms, searching thoroughly.
Many rooms contained trainers eager to battle, along with scattered items like Potions, TM disks, and Poké Balls lying on the floor—typical of most city maps in the game.
