Chapter 122: Chapter 122 - Gary: Crap, I Got Scammed!

Chapter 122 - Gary: Crap, I Got Scammed!

"The International Police Kanto Division… Wait. International Police!?"

At first, Gary didn't react, but as he processed Asahi's words, he jumped up from the sofa, staring at him in disbelief.

He had imagined many things—maybe even being a sparring partner for a rich lady trainer.

But he never expected Asahi's so-called part-time job to be with the International Police.

And yet…

"You're calling this a part-time job?"

"What kind of part-time job is this!?"

No wonder Asahi had made him sign a confidentiality agreement.

Now, he finally understood why Asahi could casually chat with people like Lance and Steven, why he had such terrifying strength, and why he—just a lecturer at Rainbow University—could serve as a Gym Examiner.

Although the International Police weren't as well-known as League Prosecutors, those familiar with them knew they were an elite force.

They were the ones who used all means necessary to handle criminal organizations and global threats.

So, when Gary heard that Asahi considered this a part-time job, he couldn't believe it.

"You can't deny I was right," Asahi said, listing the job's perks. "It improves battle skills, pays well, and doesn't interfere with your travels. I wasn't lying, was I?"

"Well… yeah."

Gary had to admit that Asahi wasn't wrong.

Fighting criminal organizations every day would certainly improve battle skills. The pay was top-tier, and without missions, he'd have plenty of free time to continue his journey.

But calling the International Police a part-time job still felt absurd.

"Just say if you're in or not," Asahi said. "I'm personally inviting you because I believe in your abilities."

"I didn't even invite Ash."

Hearing Ash's name, Gary instinctively flicked his hair back and said proudly, "Of course! I'm way better than that idiot."

"Since you're personally inviting me, I suppose I can reluctantly accept…"

Seeing Gary agree, Asahi turned to Green and gave her a look.

[See? I told you, just mention Ash, and he'd agree immediately. Was I right or was I right?]

Green glanced at Gary, who was busy admiring himself, and nodded.

She had to admit—Asahi had Gary completely figured out.

Although bringing up Ash had clouded Gary's judgment, after signing all the employment documents, his intelligence resurfaced.

Thinking about facing criminal organizations in the future, he felt a bit uneasy.

So, he voiced his concerns to Asahi.

Hearing this, Asahi patted his shoulder and laughed. "Don't worry. If we encounter a dangerous enemy, I'll handle it. You'll just provide backup."

"You won't be sent on high-risk missions alone. Even Professor Oak asked me to look after you."

Gary thought about Asahi's Gardevoir and his Champion-level Eevee.

Right. If anything happened, Asahi would be there.

Relaxing a bit, he asked, "By the way, how many people are in our Kanto Division?"

Although the International Police was a small organization, Gary assumed a regional branch should have at least fifty members.

After all, this was just one safehouse. There had to be more agents spread throughout Kanto.

Then, he saw Asahi raise a hand, showing five fingers… and then two.

"Fifty-two members? Sounds about right!" Gary perked up.

With fifty-two colleagues backing him, he could make a name for himself in Kanto!

Soon, Rocket Grunts would be running in fear at the mere mention of his name!

Just as he was getting excited, Asahi patted his shoulder and brought him back to reality.

"Where'd you get fifty-two from? If we had fifty-two agents, Rocket wouldn't even be a problem."

"Then what did you mean by five and two…?" Gary asked, confused.

"I meant that, aside from you, our entire division consists of five people… and two Pokémon."

Asahi pointed to the two Gallades standing beside him.

Gary instinctively waved back at them, but his mind was in chaos.

"F-Five people!?"

This was beyond just a big difference from his expectations—it was a complete disaster.

Even thirty members would've been fine, but five…

"Can I still quit…?" Gary asked hopefully.

"You already signed the papers. What do you think?" Asahi smiled.

Gary's expression turned blank.

I got scammed.

Green, watching from the side, felt a deep sense of nostalgia.

After all, she had been tricked into joining the Kanto Division the exact same way.

Seeing Gary's expression, Asahi patted his shoulder to comfort him.

"Don't look so down. You actually joined at a good time."

"When I first joined the International Police, the entire Kanto Division only had one person—me. Well, aside from Lance, who was a temporary acting chief."

"This entire division was built up by me, piece by piece!"

"And now, with you joining, trust me, the Kanto Division will only get better!"

Hearing Asahi's grand vision, Gary had no choice but to accept reality.

What else could he do?

Since quitting wasn't an option, Gary could only hope that Asahi would improve the division as soon as possible.

Besides, having fewer members had its advantages—at least he didn't have to waste time maintaining relationships. And once the division expanded, he'd be considered a senior member.

Convincing himself of this, Gary felt a little better.
