The morning sun crept over the horizon, casting its warm glow across the sacred mountains of Kyoto. The gentle rustle of leaves and the quiet chirping of birds filled the air around the ancient shrine hidden within the forest. A soft breeze drifted through the open windows, pulling lightly at the thin curtains and brushing against the bare skin of the shrine's most powerful occupant.
Yasaka lay still for a moment, letting her eyes slowly flutter open. Her golden hair spilled around her shoulders, tangled slightly from the wildness of the night before. Her body ached—but not in pain. Her limbs were sore, heavy, but there was a warmth in her chest, a lingering satisfaction that pulsed faintly through every inch of her.
She blinked, adjusting to the sunlight before sitting up slowly. The blanket slipped down her bare shoulders, and the rush of memories returned. Her cheeks burned. Her mind spun. Her eyes flicked to her side, where he still lay.
Kaelthar.
The being who had walked out of nowhere, who radiated power older than the stars. Who had touched her—not just physically, but in a way that left marks on her soul.
And now, as the cool morning air kissed her skin, she found herself whispering inside her head: What the hell did I just get myself into?
She got up slowly, wrapping a sheet around her naked form, careful not to make much noise. She needed to think. Breathe. Process. And most importantly—not look at him again.
But she couldn't help herself.
She turned.
Kaelthar lay on the futon, one arm draped loosely over his chest, his bare skin glowing faintly under the morning light. His breathing was steady, calm. Serene, even. Like nothing about the previous night had fazed him.
Yasaka's eyes drifted downward.
She froze.
Her mouth opened slightly, heat shooting straight to her cheeks.
How the hell did I take that? How did that even fit inside me? she screamed internally, turning away so fast she nearly tripped over her own kimono. Her face was burning, her heartbeat pounding in her ears.
It wasn't just the memories of what they did—it was how intense everything had felt. How real. How... consuming.
She quickly dressed, fingers fumbling with the sash. Her body was still a little too warm. Her heat cycle hadn't passed completely. The night before had only intensified it.
She took a deep breath, tying the final knot on her kimono, and stepped out into the cool mountain air.
She needed space.
Kaelthar stirred behind her. "Are you feeling alright?"
Yasaka turned slightly, flustered. "Fine. Just... needed to cool off a bit. Hormones are a mess. You know how it is."
He nodded thoughtfully. "I don't, but I'm willing to learn."
She gave him a half-smile. "Of course you don't. You're probably so ancient, your hormones gave up eons ago."
"I regenerate," he replied casually. "Nothing gives up."
Her face turned red again.
She huffed and walked further down the path outside the shrine. Her thoughts spun like a whirlwind.
I slept with a multiversal deity.
Not just any deity. A being older than most gods. And yet... he was oddly down-to-earth. Calm. Kind. He didn't act like someone who could destroy galaxies. He acted more like an old soul watching a garden grow.
She shook her head. Her heat was getting worse again.
She was about to sit under the sacred tree when she felt a sudden burst of energy approaching.
"Mom!"
The familiar voice echoed through the trees.
Yasaka turned just in time to see a blur of golden hair, a white kimono, and fox tails.
"Kunou!" she called, managing a soft smile.
Kunou skidded to a stop in front of her mother, panting slightly.
"I looked everywhere for you! Why did you sleep out here?"
Before Yasaka could answer, Kaelthar stepped out of the shrine behind her.
Kunou's eyes widened.
She immediately stepped closer to her mother and narrowed her gaze at the tall, otherworldly man with silver hair and glowing eyes.
"Who is that?"
Yasaka hesitated. "He's... a guest. He stayed the night with me."
Kunou's ears twitched. "Stayed the night?"
Kaelthar crouched slightly, bringing himself to Kunou's eye level. "You must be Kunou. Your mother told me about you."
Kunou crossed her arms. "Did you do something weird to my mom?"
"Kunou!" Yasaka scolded, flustered.
Kaelthar just smiled, unfazed. "No. I did not harm her. I only answered a call."
Kunou raised an eyebrow. "You sound weird."
Kaelthar shrugged. "I am."
There was a moment of silence.
Kunou squinted at him, then stepped forward and sniffed lightly.
Yasaka froze.
Kunou pulled back. "You smell like the stars."
Kaelthar tilted his head. "Thank you."
Kunou slowly nodded. "Okay. You're not bad. Just weird."
Yasaka breathed out in relief. She looked at Kaelthar, who simply offered her a calm glance. As if this interaction was just another passing breeze to him.
The three began walking down the mountain path. Kunou skipped ahead, humming softly.
Yasaka walked beside Kaelthar, hands clasped behind her back.
"You're really strange, you know that?" she muttered.
"I've been called worse," he replied.
"You don't act like someone who's older than the stars. You act like a... monk. Or a guy who watches ants build cities."
He nodded. "Mortals fascinate me. They build, they break, they rebuild. They move forward even when the divine stagnate."
She looked at him carefully. "You're not going to disappear, are you?"
He didn't answer right away. The wind rustled the trees.
"I don't know. I go where I'm needed. But... I wouldn't mind staying. For now."
She glanced at him again.
He wasn't just power. He wasn't just wisdom.
He was lonely.
And maybe... so was she.
