The days slipped by like the wind through pine needles—quiet, constant, and deceptively still.

What began as an intense encounter between Yasaka and Kaelthar had evolved into something that resembled peace. Not normalcy—nothing about having a being older than the stars as a guest was "normal"—but a sense of ease had taken root in the mountain shrine.

Every night, under the gentle hush of moonlight, Yasaka and Kaelthar would come together again. There was no pretense, no ceremony—just heat, instinct, and the strange, almost sacred connection between them. It was carnal, yes. Passionate. But more than that, it felt inevitable, as if the universe itself had sighed and woven their paths together.

Yasaka had stopped trying to understand it.

She'd surrendered to it.

And when her breath caught beneath him, when her nails dug into his back and her cries echoed into the night, she knew she didn't regret it.

In the mornings, however, Kaelthar was a completely different man.

He rose early—before the birds, before the breeze—and meditated in the garden. Kunou had started sitting beside him, mimicking his posture, though her tail always twitched impatiently.

He never spoke of power or glory. He never tried to impress. He just… was. A mountain in human form.

Yasaka watched him from the porch, tea in hand, pretending not to care.

But she did. Gods, she did.

He had charmed her daughter. He had anchored her nights. And somehow, without trying, he had softened the edges she'd spent years sharpening.

"You're weird," Kunou told him one morning, mid-meditation.

"Yes," he agreed.

"But not scary."

"I try not to be."

"You make Mom weird too."

He opened one eye. "She makes herself weird."

Kunou squinted. "So… do you like her?"

"Yes."

Yasaka, watching from behind the sliding door, nearly dropped her tea.

Later, under the cherry tree, Yasaka leaned against Kaelthar's shoulder, the evening breeze threading through her hair.

"You could've been anywhere," she murmured. "Why here?"

Kaelthar didn't answer right away. His fingers brushed through her golden strands, slow and thoughtful.

"Because this place is still trying. It hasn't given up. Not like some others."

She tilted her head up at him. "You talk like a tired old man."

"I am."

"But you're also—" She hesitated. "—surprisingly decent. For a primordial being."

He gave a small smile. "Balance isn't a crown. It's a burden. One I carry so others don't have to."

She sighed, resting her head back on his chest. "You're weird."

"So I've heard."

But that night—something changed.

Kaelthar sat alone beneath the stars after Yasaka had fallen asleep. The quiet around him was not peace—it was pressure. Weight. Something tugged at the edges of his senses like a whisper beneath a locked door.

A pulse.

A vibration.

He stood slowly.

He stretched his awareness outward—beyond the mountain, beyond Earth, beyond this universe. Through the folds of the multiverse, past the veils of time and space.

And there it was.

Faint.

Coiled.

Watching.

Like a claw scratching the edge of a sealed prison.

"Impossible," he muttered.

It felt like… him.

Like Vorath.

But Vorath was shattered. Banished. Scattered across the edge-realms after their final clash. Kaelthar had made sure of it.

And yet…

Some chaotic presence—familiar, heavy, venomous—was breathing again.

Only a few beings in the multiverse could shield themselves from his gaze.

Fewer still could hide intent from him.

This wasn't just a ripple.

It was an omen.

He narrowed his eyes. The air around him shimmered faintly with cosmic light. The stars above him pulsed in response.

He needed to investigate.

The next morning, Yasaka sat cross-legged outside, sipping her tea. She didn't turn when Kaelthar joined her.

"You're leaving, aren't you?" she said.

His silence was answer enough.

She looked up at him. Her golden eyes, tired but sharp.

"Why?"

"I felt something. Something old. Chaotic. I need to know what it is."

Her voice dropped. "Is it... him?"

"I don't know. But whatever it is, it's veiled—and it's powerful. That alone is enough reason to act."

Yasaka stood and moved in front of him, close.

"You always speak in riddles. But you keep your promises. So... promise me again."

"I'll come back."

She stepped even closer. "Promise me."

He reached up and placed a hand on her cheek. "I swear it."

"And don't forget—" she leaned in, pressing her lips to his "—you owe me more nights."

His smile was faint but warm. "I never forget a debt."

Kunou came running from the garden, her small hands waving. "Are you going somewhere again?!"

Kaelthar turned to her. "Just for a while. I need to look into something."

Kunou frowned. "You better come back."

"I will. And I'll bring something cool."

"Like what?"

"A flower that grows in reverse time."

"...that's awesome."

Kaelthar nodded once, then turned toward the outer path. With a slow exhale, the air shimmered around him, and in a blink, he was gone.

Yasaka stood in silence, her arms folded over her chest.

"…Idiot," she whispered, eyes soft. "You better come back whole."

Elsewhere…

A cathedral of bone and black smoke sat at the edge of a dying reality. Fires raged beyond its walls, and the sky bled rivers of starlight.

The council had gathered.

Mal'Zir, once bound by ancient law, stood now in open defiance, eyes burning with cruel amusement.

"He's moving again."

Another voice hissed, fragmented and hollow. "The dragon walks."

A third, bloated with corruption, oozed from the shadows. "Vorath stirs… piece by piece."

From the void beyond the chamber, a voice deeper than creation itself spoke.

"Then the balance tips… and we dance once more."
