Chapter 267: The World As It Was
Rael's eyes darted open as he hit his head against the Virtual Reality Pod's glass panel.
But when he realized where he was, his eyes widened.
What the fuck am I doing here? Rael thought, his heart pounding rapidly.
He pushed open the Virtual Reality Pod, and the loud knocking on his door soon resounded, followed by a loud yet familiar voice.
"Oi! Rael! Open your fucking door! I heard you slept with my wife! You're fucking done!"
Carl? Rael tilted his head. The fucker who wanted to sell my organs because I lost him a bit of money...?
The moment that thought appeared inside his mind, Rael froze.
He wasn't sure what had just happened, as the last thing he remembered was passing out inside the mind realm.
Yet somehow, he was back in the past, right after he'd absorbed the Beast's eye.
How did he know it was after and not before?
Well, the fuckers had already broken half his door down.
"Fuck off!" Rael yelled as he stepped out of the pod and ran up to his closet, pulling out a shotgun.
It was just one of the many weapons he had managed to smuggle inside his apartment, so with that in mind, he hid in a corner of his room and waited.
Finally, the door burst open as gunshots resounded, shredding through the front of the Virtual Reality Pod.
But Rael wasn't there. Instead...
—BANG!
Rael pulled the trigger, killing three of the intruders at once with a single blast.
Then, he glanced back toward Carl, who was reaching for his gun.
But once he saw the expression on Rael's face and the barrel of the shotgun, he froze.
"F-Fuck! What did you do!?" Carl yelled as he took a step backward.
Yet Carl stepped straight underneath Rael's lightbulb.
The glare off his round bald head practically flashbanged Rael.
Carl took that opportunity to pull out his gun and aim it straight at Rael's head.
But before he could shoot, Rael pulled the trigger, blasting Carl to bits as well.
—BANG!
His vision finally settled, and he was met with a room filled with corpses.
And only then did he realize what he had just done.
He dropped his gun and leaned against the shattered Virtual Reality Pod, his memories of Sketa Online clashing with the memories he had in this world.
And there were very few of those.
"Shit..." Rael mumbled. "I always had something up with my head... but those memories are definitely real..."
He was sure he was inside Sketa Online and this wasn't all a huge alcohol relapse.
Thankfully, a familiar blue pop-up appeared, confirming his thoughts.
<The user has absorbed the first fragment.> <You may view a record from the distant past.>
<Warning!>
<The user's mental stability is in bad condition!>
<You may only stay inside this memory record for 10 minutes.>
<Notice: Once the user's mind clears up, they may continue playing the memory record.>
"Huh... I guess... this is as edgy as it will get," Rael commented. "Hey, Burger, are you with me?"
Sadly, no response came.
He tried opening his status screen, but even that didn't work.
All of a sudden, he heard sirens in the distance, meaning the police were coming to check out the disturbance.
His brows furrowed as he swiftly ran around his small apartment, collecting the shotgun shells from the ground and storing them inside his pocket.
He extended his hand in the air and tried storing the shotgun inside his inventory by instinct.
But all he did was drop it to the ground, causing another bullet to shoot out straight into his wall.
—BANG!
Like an idiot, he collected that shell as well and tossed the shotgun around his back before sprinting down the hallway and into the stairwell.
But before he could begin heading down, he heard several people running up, as well as their constant screaming.
—Lock down the building!
—Yes, we've secured all elevators... rooftop? We're heading up there now.
—Unit B53 already arrived on scene! There are four corpses of the local Yakuza!
Rael processed the information as he ran up the staircase to the rooftop.
Thankfully, the rooftop door was unlocked.
Rael inspected his shotgun and looked for a way out. However, as it so happened, the owner of this building had removed the fucking ladder.
So with nowhere else left to hide, Rael wedged the shotgun under the doorknob to keep it shut and approached the side of the building.
There was another rooftop only 5 meters away, and it was definitely jumpable.
He was always a bit of a pussy when it came to heights, but being caught right now would mean he'd miss this entire 10-minute memory record sequence.
So after taking a deep breath, Rael stepped back and ran.
At the last second, he jumped.
It almost seemed like he was about to miss it. However, his hand grasped onto the ledge, and he swiftly pulled himself up.
He was sure when the adrenaline ran off, all the injuries and strained muscles would come back to bite him in the ass, but for the time being, he kept running.
There was another rooftop ahead, and thankfully it was closer, so he jumped, then jumped to another.
Finally, his building was now far away, and when he looked to the sky, he saw a helicopter circling it.
Rael ducked behind some vents and caught his breath.
His hands were bloodied from nearly face-planting on the building's edges.
And his muscles were definitely strained or torn.
But as he was expecting the adrenaline to fuck him over in a minute or two, the sky suddenly brightened.
It was nighttime a moment ago, so he stood up, puzzled.
And that was when he noticed something far off in the sky.
It was a completely white being that seriously reminded him of Solenne.
They raised their hands and flicked their fingers.
In the very next moment, the blades of the helicopter halted, and soon, it began to hurtle down to the ground.
At the same time, Rael saw planes falling out of the sky, crashing into the ground and causing further chaos.
He looked over the edge and saw dozens of cars, yet not a single one was moving.
People were running around in panic, and gunshots were going off left and right.
Yet at the same time, he saw a few people begin to glow in radiant red colors.
Then, he saw one of those glowing individuals extend their palm and release a giant fireball at one of the incoming planes.
To Rael's surprise, the plane was turned to dust before it could even reach the ground.
However, not even a second later, more people began glowing, yet they glowed in a slightly different light, golden.
And once the light settled, he spotted the golden people rushing up to the injured and swiftly revitalizing them.
There was another wave of blue, and those people turned out to be tankier individuals who blocked debris with their bodies.
Then finally, the last glow.
It was pure silver, and this time, that glow surrounded even Rael himself.
And moments later, the bout of pop-ups he wasn't expecting to see suddenly flooded his vision.
<Ding!>
<Congratulations, your world: World #2221 has undergone an Awakening!>
<World #2221 will undergo a Second Awakening in: 90 days.>
—Requirements to survive the Second Awakening:
1. Reach level 50. (Incomplete)
2. Evolve your class once. (Incomplete)
3. Kill 1 human (Completed)
The pop-ups stopped coming, and his confusion didn't fade in the slightest.
But that was when his body emitted a silver pulse, and with that, the final pop-up came.
<You have gained the [Utility] Class: [Mildly Inconvenient] (Common | Utility)>
<Would you like to view the class...>
<Ding!>
<You are being forcefully pulled out of the Memory Record!>
Rael's vision shifted again as he returned, a splitting headache pounding in his skull.
He was back in his usual body, and in front of him, he saw a completely frozen world.
There were a bunch of Chop-Es scattered around, holding onto Alene, who had her scythe placed right at the base of Rael's neck.
Since she was frozen, he wasn't scared, but just in case, he moved aside.
Thankfully he did, because the world unfroze a second later.
Her scythe sliced through the air, missing him by a hair.
Then, she glared in his direction.
At the same time, the pop-up from earlier appeared.
<Alene Grandeur's Mental Integrity has fallen drastically!>
<You may overtake her body, or trap her in an endless nightmare to harvest her stats!>
<Choose...>
<Synaptic Hijack / Paragon of Fear: Endless Nightmare>
He didn't press it right away. Instead, he simply stared at her, his expression dazed.
Even if only 10 minutes had passed, what happened in that time was something he couldn't explain.
But since it was a 'memory record,' then he had no choice but to take it seriously.
Still...
What the fuck just happened?
