Chapter 188: Departure
The so-called North Mountain naturally refers to the location north of S City, where they planned to take the suburban route, circling around to the north of the city. This journey would have taken about two hours by car before the Apocalypse, and now it was even more unpredictable.
Early in the morning, just as the sky began to brighten, Su Jin and her group were ready to set off. They had rested well in the Space last night, so they were prepared bright and early.
They did not know how many days it would take for them to return from this hunting expedition, and a round trip on the same day was certainly unrealistic. Guo Yang’s space also had plenty of food, so she wasn’t particularly worried, but she still left three days’ worth of food in the cupboard.
Besides food, she took out some pre-packed thin pancakes, which were previously packaged at the villa. Su Jin’s Space could keep food fresh, so Guo Yang’s space only held a small portion, and now she took some more out, in case Guo Yang ran out.
In the garage, Su Jin moved the armored vehicle out of the Space, and several people got into the car one after another.
The group venturing out this time consisted of eight people: besides Su Jin and Lu Hao, there were Su Xiangzhe, Lin Xiuyuan, Huang Yunxiang, Mao Qiqi, Nie Qing, and Lu Guanhai, and of course, the most important Local Tyrant Gold.
The space at the rear of the armored vehicle was wide, so it didn’t feel crowded even with so many people sitting inside.
After saying goodbye to Lin Cheng and the others, they set off.
In the villa area at 5 in the morning, there were hardly any people on the road. The soldiers guarding the gate became alert upon seeing an armored vehicle approaching from a distance.
They did not intend to stop them, but after some routine checks and questions, they opened the gates and let them through.Although the area outside Dragon Leap Villa was also part of the new base, it was uninhabited. Su Jin noticed that apart from some existing residential houses, there were also some empty spaces where houses were being built.
“Just a few days, and the houses have already been built up two stories.”
Lu Guanhai looked out of the window and exclaimed. No wonder Lin Cheng and the others returned each day marveling at the power of many hands. It seems that the base is not only working on building the walls but also starting on the inside.
Su Jin remembered that at that time, the S City base was extremely popular, not only housing many survivors from S City itself, but also attracting many others from different places. These vacant areas would be gradually built into houses for survivors to live in.
Driving further, they came upon the base walls that were under construction. On the first day Lin Cheng and others participated in the construction, they came back very excited about the ambitious goals of the wall. Such thick walls could withstand not just zombies but even cannon fire without fear of being breached.
Su Jin smiled. Her understanding of the Apocalypse only lasted until the second year, by which time very powerful Mutated Zombies had already evolved. High-Level Earth Element Mutated Zombies had begun to manipulate massive rocks to attack the walls, not to mention the huge fireballs from Fire Element Zombies and other High-level Zombies. When facing a Zombie Tide, wouldn’t it be just like being attacked by cannons?
This was the reason why many small bases were consecutively wiped out back then, and survivors from all over were flocking here.
One couldn’t help but say that Liang Wei and Liang Jiuhui’s decision-making was indeed very visionary. The huge expenditure of manpower and financial resources to create solid walls was the best defensive weapon against the Apocalypse.
The armored vehicle sped along the road. Local Tyrant Gold still sat in the foremost position, watching the outside. The roads to the west of the city were relatively easy to travel on, but as they moved further ahead, the road became increasingly difficult to navigate.
Ahead, there was a zombie smashing open the windshield of a wrecked car, then it dragged out a person whose state of life or death was unknown and began to eat. The person appeared to have already died, with blood flowing from his head, which was no wonder it attracted the zombie.
“Someone has been here,” Lu Hao said, observing the scene outside.
“And there was a recent battle. They must have escaped.”
Su Jin looked around and discovered that aside from the zombie that was eating, there wasn’t a single other zombie around. Several wrecked cars were still smoking on the roadside, suggesting that someone had encountered mutated zombies and, while escaping, had also drawn away all the zombies from this road. Ṙ𝘼₦ộ𝖇Ê𝐒
Su Xiangzhe maneuvered around some junked cars in the middle of the road and continued forward.
Meanwhile, at the corner of a street, five or six young people were gasping for air as they ran, constantly looking back to check the situation behind them…
Two boys were pushing a supermarket shopping cart together, with a girl sitting inside. Her right leg was deeply stained with a large patch of blood on her jeans, and there was a piece of glass covered in blood stuck in it. The girl’s complexion was pale; the cart, moving too fast, suddenly tipped over to one side as they passed a roadblock, throwing the girl out heavily. The long piece of glass broke, but the shard left inside her thigh plunged even deeper.
“Xiaoai! Are you okay?”
The two boys pushing the cart quickly helped the girl up, while the others also stopped running and looked at her with worried faces.
“Seniors, stop worrying about me. As long as I’m here, they can follow the scent to find me. If I stay, it might slow them down,” said the girl called Xiaoai loudly.
“No, we can’t just leave you behind after we barely escaped from the school!”
A girl with long hair righted the shopping cart and had the two boys place Xiaoai back inside.
At this moment, a slightly overweight boy skillfully jumped onto a car with a smashed front, craning his neck to look behind them. What he saw made him break out in a cold sweat—the zombies were coming!
“They’re already here; we won’t be able to run away!” the overweight boy, wiping the sweat from his face, said.
“Yin Qiu, how much longer can your special ability last?”
After putting Xiaoai back into the shopping cart, a tall boy asked.
“No more than 5 minutes,” Yin Qiu, the overweight boy, replied.
“You guys keep running forward, Yin Qiu and I will hold them off here for a while.”
As he spoke, the tall boy activated his Metal Element Ability, gathering all the abandoned cars around them into a barricade in front of them.
“Why run? If we die, let’s die together. Don’t even think about playing the hero by yourself, Jian!”
A boy in an orange hoodie threw his backpack to the ground and yelled, upset that they had managed to avoid being caught by an entire school of zombies, only to possibly meet their end here.
“Fine, if we’re going to die, let’s die together!”
A boy wearing a safety helmet said fiercely, knowing that even if they left the two men behind to hold off the zombies, the rest of them wouldn’t be able to run far.
Yin Qiu, the overweight boy, gritted his teeth and prepared the Wind Ball in his hands, watching the direction the zombies were coming from.
“Xiaoai, how should I die to become a better-looking zombie?”
The long-haired girl casually pulled out a small mirror from her pocket and fixed her hair, really not wanting to become one of those zombies with intestines hanging out of a bloated belly or gaping with a bloody mouth. Since they were going to die, she wanted to die looking as good as possible.
“Senior Anna, stop dreaming. Have you ever seen a good-looking zombie? Aren’t they all rotten and stinky? Anyway, I’m definitely going to be a crippled one,” Zhang Xiaoai said, holding her thigh in pain. Thinking that she might be the first one to be eaten, she wondered if she should just pull out the glass and end it all.
But then looking at the few companions around her, she couldn’t bear to leave them. Maybe she could still be of some use later on, potentially taking some hits for them?
