Chapter 626: The surprising hunt.
Whimpers in unison with whispers traveled from every end of the coliseum. Desperate sniffles came from frightened young ones and complaints from adults that wanted to leave immediately.
"I urge you all to remain calm and stay where you are. Do not be afraid young and promising students, those good hunters and guardians are here only for your protection not to hurt you." Rufus told the young men and women. His gaze roamed around. "You all know that the academy has been infested with traitors, I have hunted many but a few still remain.
Not every traitor has made a deal, some just sold information for money and others took advantage of the chaos and confusion to do harm to our brothers and sisters. For that reason, I decided that this year before we bring in new students we must clean up the academy completely.
This is for the safety of the children. As their parents, I hope that you understood this very well. Everyone here, student, teacher, professor, cook, hunter, guardian....everyone is going to go through the test of true will. These crystals will check your conscious and figure out whether you are good or bad, human or demon or disguise." He paused because gasps and whispers broke out.
"Has this been done before?" Phoebe asked the guardians around her.
"Never but I like it, traitors will be identified sooner this way." Maureen rubbed her hands.
Rufus called everyone to order. "Do not be afraid, I do not care if you are bad because you embezzled some money or had an affair. I do not even care if you killed someone, that is not my place to judge. What we are looking for are traitors that have sold us out to demons.
Anyone that refuses to go through the test, will be admitting to being a traitor and will be taken away immediately for execution. Also, I urge anyone that could be a traitor to step forward of their own according, it will save us some time, and it will earn you some grace. Depending on your crime, you might be cleansed and forgiven." He made a polite request.
The assistant Dean of the academy stepped forward, his eyes strongly disapproved what was happening. Of course, some people assumed that he was voluntarily surrendering, and they were curious to see what would happen.
"Enough with this drama Rufus! This is not how the search is supposed to go. You are scaring the new entrants and their families." Morrel's voice trembled, a mixture of anger and fear rippling through him. "Who will dare to allow their children participate in the search again if you are digging through souls and minds for secrets? We did not sign up for this when we joined the academy."
"I am the dean of the academy Morrel, what I say is what should be done. Or are you unbothered by the fact traitors are freely roaming in the academy? Have you not heard that because of Abraham's treacherous moves or that Azur has planted spies in this academy, the so-called cuckoos. Maybe you should explain how children that were not of our bloodlines somehow passed the magic bloodline tests." Rufus spat out.
A ripple of approval hummed through the crowd, voices weaving into a quiet chorus of assent. The top ten families were the most supportive of what Rufus was planning to do.
"We must protect our children." Andre bellowed through a megaphone.
Maureen pulled the megaphone from him and screamed. "A safe academy is good for us all. Eliminate all the traitors or we guardians will put down our weapons."
"Test everyone!" A man shouted.
"I want a safe and secure academy." A woman added.
"Start with the most resistant ones." Sabrina screamed.
Chants of 'test, test, test,' increased coming from all corners.
Put in a tight spot, Morrel scratched his brow. "I...I did not mean anything bad by it, but it would have been more appropriate if you had told us about this." He chuckled, the sound fraying on the edges like a torn cloth.
A single icy laugh escaped Rufus. "Such that people like you can escape. No way in hell." He answered, taking a forceful grip on Morrel's hand which he placed on the crystal, the man let out a shrilling sound as his skin got scorched.
"You are a traitor Morrel; you have been for a long time." Rufus shoved him to the side; two enforcers grabbed him at each side. "We know what you did to Cillian and when he gets back, you will pay for all your crimes them, take him away." He ordered, returning his attention to the crowd.
"I repeat, if you are a traitor come forward and you will get a lighter sentence." Rufus warned.
His voice was assuring and yet everyone knew what happened to traitors, the last ones had been sentenced to death. It was likely that these ones would die too and even if they did not die, another cruel fate was waiting for them.
One girl from the guardian section stood up amidst gasps and ran towards the entrance. She only managed to get halfway to one of the exits before and arrow took her down. Her skin was scorched like Morrel's, and she fell to the ground.
Panic unleashed a tsunami of screams, horror rippling through the onlookers like a crack in a glass.
"Is she dead?" A fresher student asked.
Rufus shook his head, gently. "No but since you all want to join this academy, you should know what happens to those that connive with demons or those who use dark magic." He answered.
He commanded the crystals, and their light burst forth, rushing into the members of the founding families like snakes. Traitors were uprooted, fifteen in number. Rufus was surprised, he expected more but he was glad that the number was small.
"Now let us begin with you little ones." He told the freshers.
The children were aged between twelve and eighteen and yet he spoke to them as if they were toddlers.
Some of them did not even take the test, they took the cowards way out by running out of there. They wanted nothing to do with all this demon stuff. Others came from legacy families, and they had long been prepared for this day.
Once the tests were done, the ninety-three incoming new students were divided into groups according to bloodline magic. They were grouped according to the magical elements they resonated with the most.
Done with that, Rufus proceeded to the current students. Among them were three traitors who pleaded to be forgiven but mercy was not going to be showed to anyone, and they were taken away by enforcers.
Because of their age, they would not be killed but their magic would be stripped from them. All memories of the supernatural would be removed from their memories. They would be expelled from their families and sent to distant relatives with no ties to the founding families.
After them, the guardians and professors were checked. Two more traitors were found among the teachers and three demons that were executed on the spot.
After checking each and every one, Rufus gave an order that anyone that had not attended this search was not to access the academy anymore. To further enforce his words, new markers that gave them access to the academy were imprinted on their wrists. The old ones were rendered useless.
Finally, everyone sighed in relief, Rufus's cleansing was over.
