Chapter 52: Chapter 52: The Concert
There's a saying: Nothing a good round of grilled skewers can't fix. And if there is, two rounds will do the trick.
After the barbecue feast, the group's mood lightened considerably. Everyone praised Owen's grilling skills, and the casual atmosphere deepened their friendship. Between bites and beers, the men joked about life, work, and family, occasionally reminiscing about past missions without bothering to hide anything from Owen. It became evident that all of them were former CIA agents, now retired and running a private security company.
Their visit to Los Angeles wasn't just for leisure—they were here to provide security for a concert. Their client was a famous singer, and since they were in town, they decided to catch up with Bryan.
"So, Bryan, what do you say? Care to join us for a quick job on Saturday? Just a half-day gig—won't even cut into your time with Kim," Sam asked, casually pitching the offer.
Bryan didn't respond right away. "I'll think about it."
"Aw, come on! Don't you miss working with us? This gig is cake for you—just escort duty, no danger. You'll make a few thousand bucks in half a day. You could use that to buy Kim something nice," Wright chimed in, nudging him.
Everyone knew that when Bryan said "I'll think about it," he was usually leaning toward a no. But Wright knew exactly how to push his buttons. Mentioning Kim was the key. Sure enough, Bryan hesitated for a moment before agreeing.
Wright cheered, raising a victorious fist in the air. Jim sighed and handed him a ten-dollar bill, having lost a bet. Sam turned to Owen next.
"How about you, Owen? Want to earn some extra cash? We'll need local support anyway, so we might as well hire someone we trust. Bryan told us all about your heroics in France, and you're a cop. We'd feel comfortable having you on board."
"Count me in," Owen replied without much hesitation.
"Great! I'll send you the details soon."
Owen was intrigued by the opportunity. He was off work that weekend, and he wanted to see how these seasoned former operatives handled security. Despite their age, Bryan's competence suggested that this team was still highly capable.
A Few Days Later – Hilton Hotel, Presidential Suite
Dressed in a sharp black suit, Owen stood at one end of the luxurious suite while Bryan took position at the other. The suite was buzzing with activity. The star of the night was Julia Andrews, a renowned singer known as the "soulful diva." Owen wouldn't have known who she was if Amanda hadn't filled him in—he wasn't exactly up-to-date on the entertainment scene.
The scene played out like something from a movie. Julia sat at the dressing table while her team of stylists and makeup artists swarmed around her. Assistants scurried about with clothes, jewelry, and setlists, while her manager coordinated with the band for final preparations.
Sam's instructions were clear: no idle curiosity, no unnecessary conversations, and definitely no smiling. They needed to maintain professionalism and blend into the background. Sam was the team leader, or as they called it in security jargon, "the brain."
The rest of the team were "the hands"—the ones doing the work. Owen, however, was even lower in the hierarchy: he was "the feet," responsible for driving the car.
Bryan had been assigned as Julia's personal bodyguard, given his experience and reliability. Since Owen had worked with Bryan before and they trusted each other, Owen was designated as Bryan's temporary assistant whenever he wasn't driving.
The security team was lean and efficient—just Sam, Wright, Jim, Bryan, and Owen. Their mission was to ensure Julia's safety from the hotel to the Kodak Theatre and back after the concert.
With two hours to go before the concert, Sam coordinated the final plans with Julia's manager. Given Los Angeles traffic, they aimed to leave in ten minutes.
"Ten minutes until departure," Sam instructed through the comms. "Wright, check the elevators. Jim, confirm the vehicles are ready."
"Elevators are clear."
"Vehicles are in position."
The entourage left the suite on schedule. Owen led the way, while Bryan stayed close to Julia. They moved through the hotel, arriving at the front entrance where the convoy of cars waited. Bryan and Owen shielded Julia as she climbed into the lead vehicle. Bryan closed the door behind her, and Owen took the driver's seat.
The convoy pulled out smoothly. Wright and Jim followed in two separate security vehicles, one at the front and the other bringing up the rear.
The drive to the Kodak Theatre was surprisingly uneventful. Despite Los Angeles's notorious traffic, they encountered no major delays or incidents. The convoy quietly slipped into the theatre through the back entrance, away from the throngs of excited fans gathered at the front.
Inside, Julia was ushered to her dressing room for final touch-ups. Time passed quickly, and before long, the concert began. The crowd erupted in cheers as Julia took the stage, her powerful voice captivating the audience.
Owen and Bryan remained backstage, never letting Julia out of their sight. From their vantage point, they monitored the performance and the surrounding area.
The show proceeded smoothly, with each song and fan interaction heightening the energy in the theatre. Even Owen, who rarely paid attention to music, found himself impressed. Julia's voice was mesmerizing—no wonder she had earned her reputation as a soulful diva.
As the concert neared its end, Bryan checked his watch. Two and a half hours had flown by, and they were now on the final song. Over the earpiece, Sam's voice crackled with instructions.
"Show's almost over. Everyone stay alert. Things can get chaotic when the crowd doesn't want their idol to leave."
Sam had prepared for all contingencies. If fans became too aggressive, they would execute a rapid extraction plan to ensure Julia's safety.
The team tensed slightly, anticipating the final moments of the show. This was often the riskiest part, where emotions ran high and unpredictable situations could arise. But they were ready.
