Chapter 28: Trials Finale: Art is an Explosion
It was still a start without a bright spot. Uchiha Mikoto, deciding to strike first, sprang into action, throwing three kunai in a split second. The kunai collided in mid-air, tracing a long arc before hurtling straight towards Aburame Shibi.
Aburame Shibi, wearing his ancestral sunglasses and a white windbreaker that lent him an elusive aura, deftly intercepted the kunai with his own, the clinking sound of metal echoing through the arena. He quickly performed a series of hand seals. "Paralysis."
Uchiha Mikoto frowned, "No… I can't move!"
Realisation dawned upon her as she found her feet rooted to the ground. From the audience, Nawaki's urgent voice cut through the tension. "Dodge the jutsu, Mikoto!"
"It's useless," Aburame Shibi remarked calmly. "My insects have attached to your feet along the surface. You're immobilised now."
With a swift motion, Aburame Shibi's hands blurred through more seals. "Go, my treasure." Swarms of parasitic insects surged out from his trench coat, converging on Uchiha Mikoto.
Mikoto, unfazed, quickly formed her own hand seals. A dazzling lightning illuminated her figure, arcs of electricity crackling around her body. "Oh, trying to use Lightning-Style to fry his insects? Clever," Uchiha Tatsumi observed from the sidelines, his gaze fixed on Mikoto.
"That's it, Mikoto! Keep it up!" The audience's cheers resonated, energising her.
As the lightning coursed through her, Mikoto regained mobility. The insects had flown in her direction, relentless. Without hesitation, she threw a smoke bomb, enveloping the area in thick, obscuring smoke.
Despite the visual obstruction, Aburame Shibi remained calm. His hands extended, directing his insects towards Mikoto. These chakra-absorbing insects possessed an uncanny sensitivity to enemy chakra, effectively replacing traditional sight.
"Found you," he muttered. The feedback from his insects indicated Uchiha Mikoto had moved to the right.
"Go, Parasitic Insects." The swarm broke away from Shibi's body, encircling Mikoto in a pincer movement.
The smoke began to clear, revealing Mikoto surrounded by the densely packed insects. "Mikoto!" Nawaki's voice was laced with concern.
The Aburame Clan's insects were notorious for their formidable power; once they latched onto their target, escape was near impossible. Suddenly, a radiant glow enveloped Uchiha Mikoto's body.
"Minato, Nawaki, step back now!" Uchiha Tatsumi's command was urgent, and he pulled them away from the ring, retreating over twenty meters.
"Detonate…" Mikoto's command had barely reached their ears before a thunderous explosion erupted.
"Bang!!"
The ground trembled as the arena was engulfed in smoke and debris.
The explosion had come so abruptly that many students in the audience, still engaged in casual conversations, were caught off guard. The violent blast affected several onlookers, sending tremors through the entire stadium.
When the smoke finally cleared, the once grand arena lay in ruins. "Mikoto," Uchiha Tatsumi's voice was tense as he surveyed the silent training ground. The explosive force displayed rivalled that of a B-Rank Ninjutsu, making the use of so many explosive tags seem almost wasteful.
"But explosions are an art," he mused, recalling Deidara's fascination with blasts. It certainly was exhilarating.
At that moment, several shuriken shot through the air. Mikoto, unyielding, threw more shuriken, their elegant arcs homing in on Aburame Shibi.
The explosion had left the audience in stunned silence, but Aburame Shibi remained vigilant. He immediately deflected the incoming shuriken with precision, each clang of metal resonating through the arena.
"You can't hit me, no matter how skilfully you throw," Aburame Shibi taunted, his voice steady.
Mikoto, however, remained composed, her eyes focused. Seconds later, the shuriken scattered around Aburame Shibi, seemingly thrown in desperation.
"What...?" Shibi's eyes widened in surprise. Each shuriken was tied with a transparent, special thread – Uchiha Clan's cat mother-in-law's specialised filament, almost invisible to the naked eye.
Mikoto tightened the threads, creating a dense net that ensnared Aburame Shibi. "Good move," Uchiha Tatsumi exclaimed, impressed. The Uchiha Clan were masters of shuriken and kunai throwing, and this intricate technique was a testament to their skill.
"Lightning-Style: Circuit!" Mikoto's hands flew through the seals, sending a current of electricity through the threads. Aburame Shibi couldn't dodge in time and was struck by the Lightning-Style jutsu, collapsing to the ground.
"Winner, Uchiha Mikoto," Orochimaru's voice rang out as he stepped forward, unaffected by the battle's intensity. "Regarding the training method for the winner, we will discuss it in detail tomorrow with your teacher. It's late now, so let's disband."
Mikoto descended from the stage, a triumphant smile on her face. She approached Uchiha Tatsumi and the others, basking in their praise. "Amazing, Mikoto," Uchiha Tatsumi said, gently patting her head.
"It was okay," Mikoto replied modestly, though clearly pleased.
"By the way, what was with that explosion earlier?" Nawaki asked, still puzzled.
"It was an Explosive Tag," Mikoto explained. "I used Lightning-Style body protection to electrocute the insects underfoot. Once I could move, I used Clone Jutsu under the cover of the Smoke Bomb to draw the insects. Then, I detonated the Explosive Tag on the clone, eliminating them."
"A brilliant tactic," Uchiha Tatsumi agreed.
Uchiha Tatsumi, Minato, and Mikoto had earned the top three spots, which meant they would receive guidance from the legendary Sannin. For orphans like them, this was crucial. They lacked systematic teaching and needed more than the Academy's step-by-step approach to truly grow in strength.
As for Nawaki? He had been raised by the infamous trio of Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Orochimaru, and cared little for their guidance. Despite his unconventional upbringing, Nawaki had turned out remarkably honest – or perhaps just foolish, depending on one's perspective.
By the time Uchiha Tatsumi returned home, the sky was completely dark. The outdoor class battle had lasted longer than expected. When they left the Academy, the sun had already begun to set, partly because Uchiha Tatsumi had been procrastinating. Tsunade had been blocking the way, her fierce expression making him hesitant to leave.
In the end, Tsunade, eager for a rematch, reluctantly let them go. But her fierce look as she departed left Uchiha Tatsumi uneasy. The cherry blossom tree at the entrance, broken by her anger, stood as a testament to her strength.

Afterwards, the four friends went to the legendary Ramen Ichiraku pavilion to recharge their energy. Now, lying on his bed, Uchiha Tatsumi felt a thrill of excitement. It was time for his favourite activity – counting points.
"Hehehehe hehehe," he chuckled to himself. "Points are an art, my stupid system."
