Chapter 17
“Alright, next up is appraising the slightly larger cores.”
I picked one up and placed it on the pedestal. As soon as I did, Eve’s light flashed, and she immediately began appraising it.
“This one… it’s a core that can use the Clean magic.”
“Clean?”
That sounded like a really useful magic.
“It seems to be a skill that cleans rooms, refreshes your body, and basically purifies anything around you.”
“That sounds like a pretty normal ability.”
It may seem like a standard skill, but one thing was for sure: it would take time to do manually. If a single spell could solve that, it would be more than useful.
Still, if this was the only benefit I got, I would probably cry for real…
“Go ahead and give it a try. You’ve been walking around all day and must smell pretty bad.”
Since I don’t have a nose, I couldn’t tell, but the way Eve said it suddenly made me self-conscious.
I raised my hand in the same way I would when casting Fire and said,
“Clean.”
As I spoke the spell, I felt warmth spread across my body, and something like steam started rising.
“What is this?! It feels so refreshing!”
It was like getting a body scrub in an onsen, with all the dirt and grime being pulled out of my pores, leaving my skin smooth.
“Wait, this is actually pretty powerful, isn’t it?”
It was beyond just a simple blessing. To test it, I cast Clean on the ground, and the small dust and sand that had scattered around disappeared.
“That’s because of your strength, Master. If your skill level was lower, it wouldn’t be this effective.”
“But my level isn’t all that high, is it?”
Just the other day, I had struggled against goblins.
I imagined that someone who had learned this skill would probably never end up in a battle, so at the lowest level, it would likely be the weakest possible version. In fact, there was even a chance they might never use it.
“Eh? But didn’t you defeat so many monsters yesterday, Master?”
“Oh!”
That’s when it hit me. I hadn’t realized it because I’d defeated them so easily with magic, but those monsters would have been difficult opponents if I fought them normally.
It must be that my level had increased as a result, and my skills had leveled up too.
“So, does that mean the higher your level, the more useful these blessings become?”
It seemed like blessings and skills were multiplied by the user’s skill level. It was possible that their effectiveness could change depending on the user’s experience.
“With your power, Master, you could probably turn even the most mediocre ability into something extraordinary.”
Eve’s words hit the mark.
The reason why these blessings are considered mediocre is because people in this world don’t nurture those with such blessings.
When someone’s initial potential doesn’t seem to lend itself to anything useful, they’re quickly discarded. They’re pushed into schools without any real consideration for their abilities, and then they’re just given regular classes before being sent off to do some menial job in the town.
Since they don’t accumulate experience, their levels never increase. As a result, the more mediocre blessings will never be put to good use.
But perhaps that can’t be helped.
Even if you could make use of them with hard work, the effort and risk involved would be immense.
It makes sense to focus on training people who are already capable from the start.
If I had had a childhood friend like Rex or Miranda, maybe things would have been different for me…
The smiles of Rex and Miranda came to mind.
“For now, let’s continue with the rest of the appraisals.”
As I placed the next cores on the pedestal, Eve began the appraisals one by one.
“Poison resistance, paralysis resistance, charm resistance, confusion resistance, darkness resistance, sleep resistance, petrification resistance, fire resistance, water resistance, wind resistance, and earth resistance.”
Eve continued to appraise the next one after another.
“So many… That’s impressive.”
By the way, people with resistance-based blessings are often assigned to jobs where such abilities are necessary.
For instance, poison resistance would be useful for those working in toxic swamps or places with poor air quality…
While useful, they aren’t the most popular types of blessings.
And among higher-tier blessings, there’s immunity—a powerful blessing that nullifies negative status effects—but even then, the placements are…
“Alright. Let’s keep the fact that we have these skills a secret, okay?”
I decided to keep these skills hidden for the sake of my future.
