Chapter 202: Forming a Temporary Team
At the entrance of the building, Leng Pan and Lu Zhen walked out of the building and a biting chill stung their cheeks.
The weather was starting to get noticeably cold. There were five people waiting at the entrance including the two men from the neighboring families, one woman who happened to be the wife of one of the men, Juan Ke, and Janna.
The lot had different random weapons with them. Juan Ke had a sharper look in his eyes that was not there before. He was carrying a crossbar slung over his shoulder.
One of the other men had a makeshift weapon made from a sharpened broomstick. If used well, such a weapon could be lethal.
The other man had a hammer tied to a belt on his waist.the belt was wide and it looked like there were other smaller weapons on it too.
Janna had a determined look in her eyes even though she still appeared nervous. She was carrying a large knife that could pass for a machete.
The other woman had a baseball bat in her hand and from the way she was handling it, one could tell she has used it before.
Apart from the weapons, the group also had different types and sizes of bags on their backs. Some even had two of them.
It looked like they were determined to bring back as much meat as possible.
"Let's get into the truck. Is there anyone else driving? We won't all fit into the truck unless you decide to ride at the back of the truck." Lu Zhen said while adjusting the straps of the cargo bag he was carrying.
"Let's ride at the back. That way we can stick together." One of the neighbors suggested.
The others including Lu Zhen and Leng Pan had no objection. The five new temporary team members walked to the back of the truck and got inside the enclosed space.
Lu Zhen and Leng Pan got into the truck as well. Lu Zhen was driving and with the experience of evading zombies and running them over when necessary, the truck arrived at the slaughterhouse without many incidents.
As they passed by alleys and streets, Leng Pan looked at the city that seemed to have become a silent graveyard.
Apart from a few survivors seen scavenging and others driving to specific spots like them to find what they wanted, the only other moving thing were zombies.
To avoid encountering a horde of zombies and getting entangled in a battle for too long, the group chose to drive through alleys and narrow streets.
However, it was inevitable to fight a large group of zombies once they arrived at the slaughterhouse.
Seeing how some of the zombies were going crazy to access the buildings inside the facility, Leng Pan figured that those survivors were still there.
Their vitality must be what attracted thousands of zombies there.
After arriving at the slaughterhouse, Lu Zhen killed the engine and got out of the truck with his wife.
Like always, Leng Pan covered the truck with purification mist to prevent the zombies from getting inside.
The others also got out and walked over to them.
Janna looked at the large crowd of zombies and just thinking that they had to kill those disgusting creatures to be able to get inside made her stomach turn.
"If it's too difficult, you can go back into the truck." Leng Pan said to Janna whom she had noticed was practically trembling from fear.
"No, I will definitely get meat to eat." Janna said with determination as if she was trying to psyche herself.
She was indeed very scared. But what did being scared give her? Nothing. She had to be able to face these zombies without a trace of fear, otherwise, she would die sooner or later.
Her grandparents weren't there to protect her, so she has to learn how to protect herself.
"Have you killed a zombie before?" Leng Pan asked Janna again.
"Yes, but only once when our neighbor turned and tried to force his way into my house.
I didn't know what to do and only reacted to defend myself." Janna said with a trembling voice.
"It's okay, that's how the world is now. You did what you had to do. Moreover, the zombies are just walking corpses now. So chopping them doesn't count as killing." Leng Pan comforted the distressed young girl.
Just as the group moved forward and began to kill zombies with the weapons each held in their hands, Leng Pan felt the hair at the back of her head stand.
That was a sign of danger. For someone of her strength to perceive such danger, the problem couldn't be too small.
It looked like there had emerged a strong zombie since the last time they were there.
Lu Zhen had also sensed that something was wrong and was now on high alert.
He exchanged looks with his wife and both of them came to a tacit understanding.
Instead of using their superpowers the way they usually used them when they meet a large horde of zombies, they chose to use cold weapons.
Leng Pan had a Tang sword in her hand that was used to reap the heads of countless zombies with each swing.
Lu Zhen had a Miao saber in his hand and was similarly showing no mercy in cutting down zombies.
The other new members of the group didn't seem to have noticed something, but Leng Pan thought it was better that way. At least, they won't let fear get in the way of their fight.
Le Pang stayed close to Janna and offered support whenever needed.
The girl obviously had no experience in hunting zombies and was attacking them haphazardly. If she were alone, she would have been dead by now.
Janna also seemed to know that she was being a burden and stopped the fear that was eating at her and instead chose to face the fight bravely.
She couldn't let Leng Pan continue to guard her and slow her down. Hence, within thirty minutes of the start of the fight, Janna seemed to have transformed into a different person.
