Chapter 809: Mortal Problems
After coming to the conclusion that traveling by carriage was the best option for the two of them at the moment, Kenneth walked to the same coachman who had answered him earlier and then asked, "Is it possible to hire you to take me and my friend to Stormford?"
The coachman glanced at Kenneth with a skeptical look on his face. It was obvious that he was judging Kenneth when he looked at the man in the bedrobe from his head to his toe.
"You are saying that you want to go that far in my carriage?" he asked while turning his upper body to face Kenneth and then raising his brows.
Kenneth hadn't yet realized what he was wearing right now. And it hadn't crossed Damien's mind yet that Kenneth wasn't appropriately dressed to be traveling outside because his bedgown somewhat resembled the surcoat that Damien wore most of the time.
Kenneth gave a nod to the coachman and then replied, "Yes. We would like to go there in your carriage if someone else hasn't already booked you."
The coachman wasn't yet convinced that the man in front of him would be able to pay him. Thus, he thought of clearly stating the price that he would be charging for such long-distance travel.
"Sir, it will cost you two gold coins if you are going to book the whole carriage. Usually, I travel short distances and the passengers share the ride so it costs very less. But I think the two of you want to book the whole carriage for yourselves?"
"Yes, we would feel much more comfortable if we don't have to share the ride with the others." Kenneth gestured for Damien to get inside the carriage and then said to the coachman, "It's a deal then. Let's head out right away. We are in a little hurry."
The coachman was surprised when Kenneth didn't even flinch or try to bargain. He was also surprised to see how Kenneth didn't even suspect that he was charging a little bit more than the reasonable rate.
Since Kenneth didn't seem to be bothered by the price, the coachman believed that Kenneth was some rich brat who had just woken up and decided to run away from his mansion. And he also believed that Kenneth had more than enough money to pay him.
Thus, he happily agreed to Kenneth's request right away. "Sure. Don't worry, Sirs." He held the carriage door for his passengers to get in and then said, "I will take you both to your destination as fast as I can."
"I will hold you to your words," Kenneth said while looking at the not-so-comfortable seats of the carriage.
Seeing the hesitation, the coachman slightly smiled because that proved his theory even further that his passengers were spoilt rich kids who weren't used to traveling in common carriages.
He quickly secured the door close by inserting a piece of the stick instead of the door lock. Then he quickly settled down on his own seat and prepared to take the carriage away.
Kenneth was still standing when the carriage started to move. Damien looked at him and asked, "Why don't you sit down? The carriage won't move any faster just because you stand there so restlessly, you know?"
Kenneth scoffed at Damien and said while wrinkling his nose slightly, "I am not restless. I am just not used to traveling in this kind of carriage. So…"
Damien didn't quite understand what was so wrong with this carriage. "Is there any kind of problem?" he innocently asked.
"No, it's nothing." Kenneth didn't want to look like a crybaby who complained about the slightest inconvenience and cause drama over it.
He thought of dusting off the seat before settling down and inserting his hand inside his coat pocket– or so he thought. He looked down when he didn't find the pocket even when he tried to slip his hand inside the pocket a few times.
"Oh my goodness!" He closed his eyes and knitted his brows together when he finally realized that all this while he had been running around in the town in his bedgown. "Just kill me right now!" he softly mumbled to himself in embarrassment.
"Now what happened?" Damien was curiously watching Kenneth looking for something. However, he wasn't still getting why Kenneth was so embarrassed.
Kenneth turned to face Damien and then gestured up and down at himself. "Look! I am still in my sleeping robe! You should have reminded me to change into more appropriate clothes before bringing me here."
Damien raised one of his brows and asked, "Huh? How was I supposed to know? I was as eager as you that I barely had anything else in my mind other than bringing you here."
Kenneth sighed and then finally sat down. He looked down at his bedrobe while pursing his lips. And after a while, he asked Damien, "Can you teleport back to this carriage if you go back to Romania?"
Damien gave a nod and replied, "Yes. Since you will be here, I can teleport back to you."
Kenneth scratched his head and then asked, "Will you go back to my room and then bring a set of clothes for me? Umm… I would love to look good if… if we indeed meet my birth mother." He quickly looked at Damien and then said, "But of course, you don't have to go there immediately. You can take your time."
Damien smiled and replied, "I don't think I can rest easy until I return with your clothes now." He cleared his throat and then asked, "Do you need something else?"
"Some food would be nice?" Kenneth asked Damien while raising his brows. "I don't know if we can find hotels and inns on the road, so…"
"Got it." Damien nodded and then got up on his feet. Before teleporting away, he asked, "Maybe I should bring a few vials as well?"
"Ah, yes! That would be nice."
"Okay, I will be leaving then." A subtle hint of smoke began surrounding Damien. Your next read awaits at My Virtual Library Empire
And right before Damien disappeared from there, Kenneth shouted, "Oh! And bring some money as well! I don't have a single coin!"
As Damien had disappeared while he was still speaking, Kenneth wasn't sure if he caught everything that he said or not.
"He heard me right?" Kenneth narrowed his eyes and thought. "I hope he did. Else he will need to make another trip back to Romania." He sighed and then leaned back.
Since he didn't get much sleep last night, he fell asleep within a few minutes although he wasn't resting in a comfortable position.
In his dream, Kenneth was wandering around in a small village. The village looked very peaceful and beautiful. When he was busy enjoying the scenery, he suddenly found himself in the presence of a middle-aged woman.
He couldn't see her face that clearly. However, he was sure that it was his birth mother because he saw her giving him a sad smile.
"Mother…" he whispered in his sleep. He grimaced as though he was in great pain and mumbled what he was saying in his dream, "Why did you abandon me?"
