She Belongs To The Devil

Chapter 816: Tavern

The tavern where the coachman had stopped didn't look anything fancy. It was a small hut where a middle-aged couple offered some local food and drinks to all the travelers who stopped by.

And although Damien and Kenneth weren't used to dining in such a place, they settled down at one of the tables and ordered some food.

The other tables were occupied by some rowdy-looking men and a few women. And for some reason, everyone in the tavern was constantly looking at the table where the young boys were sitting.

Kenneth leaned in towards Damien and asked him in a whisper, "Is it just me, or are we really getting attention from everyone here?"

Damien took a quick scan of the place and then looked back at Kenneth. "Oh!" He pursed his lips and then looked down at the bed gown that Kenneth was still in. He cupped his palm around his mouth and then whispered back, "Why don't you go and find a place where you can change into something more appropriate for the day?"

Kenneth closed his eyes and hung his head in shame. "Ugh! Why did I forget about this?" He swiftly picked up the suitcase that Damien had placed beside their table and then got up after saying, "I will be right back."

As Kenneth walked towards the door of the tavern, everyone's eyes followed him as if Kenneth was some attraction.

Damien furrowed his brows as he watched the uneasy expression on everyone's face. "This doesn't feel good," he thought to himself.

The tavern was slowly being consumed by the negative aura that made Damien even more cautious. Those people even started to give strange looks to Damien and behave rather oddly. However, he couldn't do anything just yet because technically, they were just looking at him.

Damien looked towards the door and restlessly began tapping his foot on the ground. And he mumbled in an inaudible tone, "Come on, Ken. How long are you going to take?"

From the corner of his eyes, Damien suddenly noticed a burly man with a thick beard giving a suspicious look to him and then getting up on his feet. From the way he was clutching his fists and heading straight toward his table, Damien felt that the bearded man was about to pick up a fight with him for no reason.

Before that man could reach his table though, the lady of the tavern swooped in with a tray in her hand. She gave a cheerful smile to the young man and said, "Milord, here's your sweet bread and scrambled eggs with a hot cup of tea."

The lady then set the plates in front of Damien and while she was doing so, she looked at the empty chair in front of the young man and asked, "And where is the other lord who came along with you, Milord? I had brought his order as well."

Damien pointed towards the door and replied, "He went outside for a while. He will be right back, so why don't you set the plates for him as well?"

"As you say, Milord." The lady gave a polite nod and did as she was asked.

After serving, she turned around to find that burly customer standing behind her. Thus, she asked with a soft smile, "Did you need anything, Sir? Perhaps another glass of rum?"

The man looked past the lady and looked at Damien eating in peace. "Yes, another glass," he grumbled and turned around to head toward his own table.

Soon, Kenneth walked inside the tavern in his gentlemanly attire. He kept the suitcase down at the foot of the table and smiled while looking at the steaming hot food on the table.

"This is what's famous around here, huh?" He broke the bread and munched on it. And he took a big sip of the warm tea. He closed his eyes as if the food touched his soul and mumbled, "Mmm… tastes delicious…"

Damien was looking at Kenneth, wondering if he noticed the looks that people were giving him. But he was surprised to see how Kenneth was immersed in eating.

He sighed and picked up his cup. And when his lower lips brushed against the rim of the cup, he softly mumbled to the oblivious hybrid, "Kenneth, do you know that we are getting odd looks from people here?"

Kenneth smirked as he chewed on the mouthful of scrambled eggs. He slightly nodded his head and then whispered back after swallowing, "I am aware. They probably noticed my blond hair and red eyes."

Damien didn't understand what Kenneth was talking about. So, he slightly frowned and asked, "What's wrong with your hair and your eyes?"

Kenneth looked at Damien and replied, "Look around the tavern and see if you can find anyone with features like mine."

Damien inconspicuously darted his eyes around the tavern. He saw lots of people with tanner skin, dark hair, and dark eye colors. But none of them shared similar features as Kenneth. He also realized that he didn't stand out as much as Kenneth.

He looked back at Kenneth and asked, "So, they just find you fascinating, huh?"

"Maybe…" Kenneth took a sip of his tea and added while looking down at his plate, "Or maybe it's just my eyes that they find fascinating." He visibly clenched his teeth and mumbled in a little sad tone, "Can't blame them for staring when I have the Devil's eyes."

Damien didn't immediately understand what was so wrong with that. So, he said without missing a beat, "You are really lucky to get those eyes. I wish mine also looked red all the ti–" Damien suddenly recalled how Kenneth used to be labeled as a demon in the past and quickly pressed his lips shut. He looked at Kenneth's face, wondering if he unintentionally hurt him.

However, unlike what he had thought, Kenneth suddenly burst into laughter.

Damien widened his eyes because Kenneth was now attracting more attention than before. He gave an awkward smile to the people who were sitting next to their table and looked back at Kenneth. He saw a mix of auras that he was giving off – both sad as well as happy at the same time.

"Should I apologize? Or should I laugh along with him?" Damien thought to himself, unable to read what Kenneth was actually feeling and thinking.

Just when Damien was thinking of apologizing to Kenneth for what he said, Kenneth wiped the corners of his eyes and said while softly chuckling, "I'm sorry. It was funny how you were actually envious of the eyes that I have hated all my life."

Damien subtly smiled and shrugged his shoulders. "I mean… I look really dangerous with my red eyes. It is a symbol of power and fury back in hell. I bet everyone would always be scared of me if my natural eye color was red. So, yes, I envy yours."

Kenneth lost control of his laugh again and asked while chuckling, "Why would you even want everyone to be scared of you? That sounds absurd!"

"Not in hell!" Damien added with a rather serious expression on his face, "Fear is what keeps the balance in that realm. So, if I want to maintain my status as my mother's son, then I need to look fearful."

Kenneth instantly replied while trying his best to suppress his laugh, "Grow a beard then. Maybe you will look terrifying."

"I…" Damien pouted a little and mumbled while caressing his cheek, "I can't grow a full beard yet."

"Pfff…" Kenneth burst into laughter again and mumbled, "Is that why I've never seen you shaving your beard?"

"Hey, I do shave!" Damien frowned.

"Shave two strands?" Kenneth mocked Damien and even stretched his hand to feel Damien's smooth cheek.

Damien swatted Kenneth's hand away and gruffly shouted, "Shut it!" He looked at the plates on their table and then asked when he saw the empty plate in front of Kenneth, "Go and pay for the food. Our coachman is looking at us."

Kenneth turned his head to see that the coachman was actually waiting for them to finish their food. He cleared his throat and agreed. "Alright. Let's continue on our journey then." He then got up and went towards the counter while putting his hand in his waistcoat's pocket.

Damien gulped down his tea and picked up the suitcase to follow Kenneth.

After paying the tavern owners, the two foreigners walked outside to settle down in their carriage.

Everyone inside the tavern began to openly gossip about those two young and handsome men the moment they walked out.

The bearded man from earlier kept on glaring at the carriage until it sped up and disappeared from his view.
