Chapter 55: Goku Can Become Super Saiyan 2—A Brother’s Breakthrough and the Looming Shadow of Frieza
Aboard Frieza's colossal, donut-shaped spacecraft, the air hummed with the quiet menace of power. The tyrant reclined in his hoverchair, his tail flicking lazily as stars streaked past the viewport. His crimson eyes glinted with boredom as he turned to Dodoria, his hulking, pink enforcer standing at attention. "Mr. Dodoria," Frieza drawled, voice smooth as venom, "where are Vegeta's little Saiyan pets skulking now?"
Dodoria sneered, seizing the chance to twist the knife. "King Frieza, that wild dog Vegeta's still untamed. Without your say-so, he bolted to some nowhere planet and vanished. I'd wager he's turned traitor—why else the silence?"
Frieza's lips curled into a chilling smile, a soft "oh ho ho" escaping him. "Dodoria, do you think I'm blind to Vegeta's resentment? He's chafed under me for years, trembling at my might but too cowardly to act. Betray me? I doubt he's got the spine." His tone sharpened, daring contradiction.
Dodoria backpedaled, bowing low. "Forgive me, King Frieza! I misspoke." He knew better than to push when Frieza's faith in his own dominance was this firm—stubbornness could cost him dearly.
Frieza's gaze drifted, thoughtful. "Still… why the silence?" His fingers drummed the armrest, a rare flicker of curiosity breaking his icy calm. "Tell me, where was that speck of a planet Vegeta scurried off to?"
Dodoria consulted a datapad, his gravelly voice steadying. "Earth, my lord. A remote dump—worthless. No resources, just weakling natives. Barely a footnote."
Frieza's laugh rang out, sharp and sinister. "Oh ho ho, Earth, is it? Change course, Dodoria. Let's pay it a visit. I'm dying to know who—or what—gave Vegeta the guts to defy me." His eyes narrowed, a predator scenting prey.
"Yes, King Frieza." Dodoria lumbered off to relay the order, and the massive ship pivoted, engines roaring as it set a course for the unsuspecting blue planet.
Meanwhile, on Earth, the sun dipped low over Western Capital, casting golden streaks through Bulma's high-tech mansion. Renkai leaned against a workbench, watching Vegeta pace the training yard below. The Saiyan prince had bulked up under Renkai's grueling regimen, his armor gleaming with fresh dents from relentless sparring. He'd even bested Raditz in a recent bout, a feat that fueled his restless energy. Now, he stopped abruptly, fixing Renkai with a piercing stare. "You," Vegeta said, voice tight with anticipation, "you're stronger than anyone I've faced. Tell me—is the Super Saiyan legend real?"
Renkai grinned, arms crossing casually. "Real as the ground you're standing on."
Vegeta's breath hitched, eyes widening. "How can you be so sure? Are you the Super Saiyan?"
Renkai chuckled, shaking his head. "It's no myth, Vegeta. Half the security team's got it—Yamcha, Krillin, even Cell and Siru. Piccolo's the odd one out, but the rest? Super Saiyans, every one." He paused, letting it sink in. "Mixed-blood Saiyans like us build S-cells faster. Hit three million combat power, and boom—Super Saiyan 1's yours."
Vegeta's fists clenched, his pride warring with shock. "What?! You're all Super Saiyans, and I—Prince Vegeta—can't even touch it?" His voice cracked, raw with frustration.
"Want to see it?" Renkai offered, his tone light but edged with challenge.
Vegeta's head snapped up, a hungry "Yes" escaping before he could mask it with decorum. "Show me."
Renkai kicked off the ground, hovering a meter up. Golden flames erupted around him, his black hair spiking into a radiant blond, eyes flashing emerald. The air thrummed with power, a tangible weight that pressed against Vegeta's chest. "Super Saiyan 1," Renkai said, grinning down at him.
Vegeta stared, transfixed. "Incredible… the strength, the presence! I will master this—I swear it!" His resolve hardened, visions of Frieza's defeat dancing in his mind as Renkai dropped the transformation, landing with a soft thud.
"How?" Vegeta pressed, voice low and urgent. "How do I get there?"
"Three million combat power's the ticket," Renkai replied, tapping Vegeta's chest. "Grind for it. You've got the fire—use it."
Vegeta nodded, a silent vow etching itself into his scowl as he stormed off to train. Renkai watched him go, then turned as a familiar voice called out. Goku bounded up, his orange gi fluttering, a wide grin splitting his face. "Hey, Big Brother! Got a sec? Let's hit Baozi Mountain—I've got something to show you!"
Renkai raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Baozi Mountain? You're usually buried in training. What's up?"
Goku's grin widened, brimming with confidence. "A fight! I think I can take you now!"
Renkai laughed, clapping Goku's shoulder. "Big words, little brother. Let's see what you've got." With a flicker, they teleported, reappearing atop the rugged peaks of Baozi Mountain. The wind whistled through the cliffs, the modest house Goku once shared with Grandpa Gohan nestled below. They rose into the sky, squaring off amid the clouds.
"Check this out!" Goku shouted, golden light flaring around him. His hair spiked blond, aura blazing—Super Saiyan 1. The ground trembled faintly, rocks rattling loose.
Renkai tilted his head, unimpressed. "That's it? Goku, Super Saiyan 1 won't cut it against me."
Goku's eyes sparkled, undeterred. "Oh, I know, Brother. When you helped me hit Super Saiyan, the power spike was nuts—I couldn't control it. Wasted half my strength flailing around, and the form burned out fast. But I've been training hard, locking it down." His aura steadied, sharp and focused. "I call it Super Saiyan Full Power—total control, no leaks, and I can hold it way longer!"
Renkai clapped, genuinely impressed. "Nice work, Goku! You've tamed it—full power's a solid step. But if you think that's enough to beat me, you're in for a letdown."
Goku laughed, scratching his head. "Yeah, I figured. Full Power's not the end, though—I found something bigger!" His excitement surged, the air crackling. "There's a level past Super Saiyan!"
Renkai's eyes narrowed, a knowing glint flickering. "Super Saiyan 2, huh? You've cracked it?"
"Super Saiyan 2?" Goku echoed, then nodded eagerly. "That's a cool name—fits perfect! Yeah, I've got it!" With a shout, his golden aura exploded outward, jagged lightning snapping around him. His hair sharpened, sparks danced across his frame, and the sky darkened as energy pulsed. "This is it—Super Saiyan 2! What do you think, Brother? Can I take you now?"
Renkai smirked, arms still crossed. "Impressive, Goku. The power's wild—double Super Saiyan 1, easy. You're a beast." He paused, his tone turning playful yet firm. "But me? I'm a Shenron, not some Saiyan to outmuscle. Super Saiyan 2's a milestone, not a trump card. You'd need more than lightning to topple me."
Goku deflated slightly, then grinned. "Aw, man, I knew it! You're too tough, Brother. Guess I've got more training to do!" His laughter rang out, pure and unshaken, as the sparks faded and he dropped back to normal.
Renkai floated closer, ruffling Goku's hair. "Keep pushing, little brother. You're getting there." His gaze drifted skyward, a faint unease stirring. Frieza's shadow was creeping closer, and Earth's quiet days were numbered.
Far above, the donut ship sliced through the void, its course locked. Frieza's laughter echoed faintly, a harbinger of the storm to come.
