Chapter 139: Chapter 139: Baratheon

After hearing his self-introduction and looking at the Lightning Lord Beric Dondarrion beside him, Wright remembered who the little boy holding the banner was.

Edric Dayne, known as Ned, was now the head of House Dayne of Dorne, the Lord of Starfall.

Before his trip to the Eastern Continent, Ashara had told Wright that their aunt was engaged to the Lightning Lord, and Edric was following him as a squire. His father, the previous Sword of the Morning elder brother, had suddenly died of illness, and he inherited the title of Lord of Dayne when he was not even ten years old.

However, Wright found his platinum blonde hair and almost purple eyes very strange. All the Daynes had dark hair; how could he have this Valyrian appearance?

No one knew his mother's name, and the ages of the Targaryen women didn't match up.

Could it be a case of ancestral throwback?

Those who married into the Targaryen royal family when they became kings included members of House Hightower, House Dondarrion, House Penrose, and the Reach houses of Costayne and Harroway. But the royal bloodlines from these marriages had all died out. Especially the Hightowers of the Reach, all seven descendants died within two years.

The Targaryen family that survived to Rhaegar and Daenerys's generation had only integrated the bloodlines of five other houses: Velaryon, Arryn, Martell, Dayne, and Blackwood.

Maester Aemon of the Night's Watch, who was still alive, had a mother who was Dyanna of House Dayne.

So Edric Dayne was similar to the Baratheon family; they might have the blood of a Targaryen daughter who married out.

At this moment, Beric Dondarrion came over, interrupting Wright's thoughts:

"Lord Wright, please wait a moment, there are still our soldiers below the ridge. I will gather the troops first."

Wright: "It's alright, Lord Dondarrion, please go ahead."

He hurriedly ran off with a few messengers. Wright, having nothing to do, saw the little boy still holding the banner in place and asked him:

"Is your mother Valyrian?"

Edric Dayne: "Yes, she came from Lys. I know the way, we should go south and wait for them on the hill."

"Lys, I originally planned to pass by there on my way back by ship, but I changed my mode of transportation and didn't go. Are you close to Ashara?"

"When we were little, she often took us children all over the city, taking us climbing trees to steal birds' nests, fishing in the river, and going to the orchard to eat fruit. She even dug a hole under the walls of Starfall, and she always led the team whenever we snuck out."

"Typical Ashara!"

Wright chatted with him as they walked.

Beric Dondarrion gathered all the soldiers and ran back to where he was, seeing that Wright and Edric had already reached the hillside. He hurriedly followed.

His heart was in his throat, somewhat afraid that Wright would kill Edric Dayne.

In the few years that Wright had been on the Eastern Continent, the caravans that traveled back and forth had brought all kinds of news back to Westeros. Among them, the most talked about was Wright's affairs, each one more explosive than the last.

It was rumored that the first thing Wright Baratheon did was steal the Archon of Tyrosh's golden toilet, which was how he had so much money while operating in the East.

Then he killed tens of thousands of people in Braavos, captured all the turtles in Ny Sar to sell for money, stole a large amount of gold coins in Volantis, and even looted several Dothraki camps, carrying out massacres in Lorath and Qohor, not even sparing children.

Finally, news also came from Myr and Pentos that hundreds of women in both cities claimed to have been insulted by Wright, and dozens of women had even given birth to bastards with different hair colors!

The details were even more appalling, burning, killing, looting, committing all kinds of evil. Wright was the absolute number one villain on the Eastern Continent! Euron boasting that he could fight Wright to a standstill immediately attracted a large group of pirates to join him.

Those with correct information certainly didn't believe it, but among the lower classes, they liked to talk about these stories, believing that there was no smoke without fire, and that the real situation was not far from the rumors.

Throughout Westeros, many criminals, wherever they sat down to chat, talked about Wright's glorious deeds, making their own actions seem shameful in comparison. Especially a certain bastard in the North, after hearing these stories, was awestruck, as if enlightened, and vowed to take Wright as his role model, instantly looking down on the servant beside him.

Beric Dondarrion ran up the hill as fast as he could to Edric Dayne's side, looking extremely nervous.

Wright, seeing his condition, asked: "You seem very afraid of me?"

Beric hesitated for a moment but still said it: "Lord Wright, there are many very unfavorable rumors about you. Although we don't quite believe them, these rumors are too…"

Wright: "Let's go, we'll talk as we walk. I also know about these rumors. They are all tricks by my enemies to slander me."

Reputation was definitely important. Wright couldn't figure out for the moment which group was adding fuel to the fire and smearing him. Varys didn't have the guts, nor did Dorne; their intelligence relied on Varys's connections, they didn't have the ability to do these things.

Braavos, the Golden Company, mercenaries, Dothraki, merchants... Wright thought about it and realized that he had offended quite a few people, and he couldn't solve it for the time being. He couldn't go to Braavos to slaughter the city, he couldn't find where the Golden Company was, the Dothraki were nomadic, and he didn't even know the names of the mercenaries and merchants. It seemed he needed to establish his own intelligence network.

Wright explained things to the two of them one by one. Although it differed from the rumors, some of the things were true, making the two even more admiring of Wright. They also felt that although Wright looked very imposing and fierce on the outside, his personality was actually similar to Renly's, a very easygoing person who could chat with an eleven or twelve-year-old child.

The mood of the group gradually relaxed, and their relationship gradually became closer. "Lightning Lord" smiled lewdly and whispered to Wright:

"Hehe, did you really… in Myr and Pentos, with hundreds of women…?"

As he spoke, he extended one index finger and made a circle with the other, repeatedly gesticulating with both hands.

Wright immediately responded: "This is absolutely a rumor. I didn't even go to Pentos. I only stayed one night in Myr. How could I find so many people? Look, finding people, plus the journey to different places, plus doing business, anyone who knows a little arithmetic can calculate that there isn't enough time."

"Why are you talking so quietly?"

"You'll understand when you get married. Quickly go to the port ahead and send a message, tell the soldiers to prepare ships to go to Bloodstone, and say that Wright Baratheon has returned."

Beric Dondarrion pushed the little boy away and said in a calm, low voice:

"But the rumors say you did it all in one night!"

"Impossible." Even dealing with two was difficult, Wright was truly speechless, wanting to cry but having no tears.

Wright took a day by boat to reach the port of Bloodstone. Raven messages had already spread the information.

Bloodstone would be used as a transit station for military supplies. Located in a natural, huge bay, the construction of the port was already well underway, with hundreds of various ships docked here.

Wright's ship was still far from the coast, but he could already see that a pier in the port had been cleared of ships, and a large group of people were waiting on it. Colorful banners of various houses were fluttering in the port, held by attendants. At the front were three stag banners with subtle differences.

All the nobles on Bloodstone had received a message from King Robert yesterday that there would be a banquet today, and they had successively withdrawn from various patrol camps back to Bloodstone Port, which was the official name of this town under construction.

Because this war was very well prepared, the supplies were extremely abundant, completely subverting the Westerosi nobles' understanding of war logistics.

Arrows, wildfire, weapons, sword oil, planks, ropes, and canvas for repairing ships, tools for producing agricultural implements and seeds, building tools, and even some key materials were directly transported here.

The food was even more abundant. There was so much dry food that they couldn't finish it. Fishermen regularly delivered fish, and there were also pickles and fruit. Even ordinary soldiers could receive a bottle of wine, a piece of chocolate, and a small bag of sugar every week, although compared to what the nobles ate, the quality was certainly much worse.

Westeros had fought many wars with the Stepstones, all of which were hit-and-run wars. Even if garrisons were left behind, they were withdrawn for various reasons, so that this place had not been captured for hundreds of years.

A few years ago, Wright proposed to occupy the Stepstones. This war was both beneficial to national development and a way for Robert, Stannis, and Renly to repay Wright's favor. From a young age, Wright had only proposed policies beneficial to the territory and the country, and had almost never mentioned any material needs for himself.

Wright himself hadn't even fully researched magic; he would likely spend his entire life on it and had no time for other matters. But Robert and his brothers were native Westerosi, and they didn't think that way. Wright's series of suggestions had brought the Baratheon family to its peak: a king and two Lords. Now that Wright had finally made a request, the three were doing everything in their power to help him.

Conquering the Stepstones wouldn't have required so much effort originally, but Stannis had mobilized all the resources he could, and Renly had practically staked all of the Stormlands' money and troops. This forced Robert to use his royal authority, mobilizing troops from the North to maintain the stability of the realm. The three were contributing money and effort to help Wright take and initially develop the Stepstones.

The three Baratheon brothers were waiting at the port, so the other nobles naturally had to wait there as well, each one occasionally taking out their pocket watches to check the time.

Woo~~~

The horn on the high tower sounded, signaling the arrival of friendly ships.

"Is that the ship?"

"The Dondarrion lightning banner, it is!" Someone with good eyesight identified the banner on the sails.

"Is Wright really as powerful as the rumors say?" a female voice said.

The woman speaking was extremely tall, wearing full plate armor. She held her helmet in her hands, her appearance somewhat masculine, with golden hair fluttering in the wind.

Not only her, but many of the young people at the port had been sparring with wooden swords or serving as squires in various places when Wright left the continent four years ago. They had only heard about Wright's deeds as stories. Now, seeing the array of nobles receiving him, they were very puzzled.

"I participated in the Greyjoy Rebellion back then and personally saw Wright use magic to blast a hole in the walls of Pyke. He was only twelve years old then! He should be twenty-one now. I almost forgot, the Lord of Pyke still hasn't dared to repair that breach."

After hearing the news, the nobles were all moving towards the port. Those gathered here were from the Crownlands, the Stormlands, and the Reach. The heads of the houses had more or less interacted with Wright and done business with him.

Wright didn't use magic to get there but stood at the bow of the ship, looking at his brothers and old friends whom he hadn't seen for several years. Perhaps because of the war, everyone had gotten tanned.

Robert had actually lost weight! His custom-made large-bellied armor was noticeably smaller.

Stannis's hair had receded into a "Mediterranean" pattern.

Renly had a short, choppy haircut and had finally shaved his sideburns.

The Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Barristan Selmy, had completely white hair, and his once straight posture was now somewhat hunched.

Kingsguard Lyn Corbray's face was even more resolute.

Garlan Tyrell was stronger, with a look of happiness tinged with loss.

Davos Seaworth and his sons were also there.

Monford Velaryon, whom he had met on Dragonstone, was even more handsome with his golden hair.

There were also many other lords he knew. Wright recalled their names one by one, and there were even more young faces that Wright didn't recognize.

The ship docked, Wright jumped onto the pier, and hugged his three brothers.

"Hahaha, let's go! A feast has been prepared for you!"

"Where you are, Robert, there will definitely be a feast!" Wright felt that Robert was still the same as ever.

Stannis squeezed Wright's arm:

"Hmm, not bad, at least you've been eating well."

Renly and Wright, having not seen their own faces reflected in each other for a long time, were looking each other over, searching for differences.

"Where are your sideburns?"

"They looked good, but soup always got stuck in them!"

"Hahaha."

The four brothers walked shoulder to shoulder towards the port's great hall. The lords he recognized greeted Wright along the way, and Renly and the others introduced the young people around them to Wright, all of whom were younger generations they had brought to gain experience.

After a few years apart, there was a slight awkwardness in the brothers' conversation, but after a few glasses of strong wine at the banquet, everyone returned to the way they were a few years ago.

Once Robert started drinking at a banquet, no one could leave until they were passed out.

Renly and Robert teased Wright about various rumors. They were using this occasion to let Wright clarify the rumors. Wright understood their intention. He explained some of them to everyone, and even exaggerated some of the rumors himself.

People would occasionally come over to toast Wright and reminisce, asking Wright about his future plans. Wright directly told them that he wouldn't be leaving anymore and would be staying here to fight the war.

Alcohol, jokes, socializing, the entire hall was filled with bursts of laughter.

A few days later, Robert ordered the hills south of Bloodstone, covering several dozen square kilometers, to be sealed off, with no one allowed to enter.

The four Baratheon brothers rode on horseback to the blockade line.

"Your Majesty, will this be unsafe?" Lord Commander Barristan Selmy said.

Robert impatiently replied: "What unsafe? Renly and Wright, the two strongest mages on the continent, are here. Who can harm me?"

Barristan still looked troubled.

Robert suddenly understood and said to the Kingsguard: "Today, in the name of the king, I grant you a day off. Go and rest."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

Robert: "Haha, that's settled then, let's go!"

Wright led the three to a small basin surrounded by hills. He dismounted and took out blindfolds from his pocket, handing them to them:

"Let's tie the horses to a rock first, and we also need to blindfold the horses."

The others did as he said. Robert walked to Wright's side, looking at the barren grassland:

"I received intelligence that the last Targaryen descendant, Daenerys, has hatched three dragons, and then completely disappeared."

Wright: "Really? When did this happen?"

Robert: "Someone saw small dragons a few months ago, about the size of small dogs. The exact hatching time is unknown. Can your dragon be that small?"

Wright: "Uh… definitely bigger than a small dog!"
