Chapter 219: So that is where it goes
After a few seconds she followed them around the corner and saw there were two sets of guards. Both waiting on either side of the entrance to the infirmary. She watched as they grouped up.
"Mister Trentwood and Mister Callus you have exactly one minute to leave the room before we come in!" The Warden spoke through a device and it came out of the speakers that were only in the direct vicinity of the Infirmary.
Thirty seconds passed when there was activity. Shepard was walking out while supporting Marcus who was white in the face and whose wound had clearly started bleeding again. Out of view of her and the Warden, Shepard was clearly concealing something behind his back.
"Mister Callus-!" The Warden did not get a chance to complete his sentence as Shepard suddenly tossed a bucket in the air towards the Warden and his people. Salem leaned back around the corner so she was out of view.
Just in time to because an explosion of white smoke filled the entire hall and she could see some bodies fly past her. They were just shadows from what she could see. But she could see one hit the wall opposite her and fall to the ground. She could also hear shouting and panicking going the other way. Which also happened to be where the entrance of the hangar was located.
After a moment of thought she moved forward and grabbed the knocked out guard and dragged them to the alcove she was hidden inside of. She then began removing their armor and put it on herself. Another new disguise.
After a minute she was transformed into another of these guards but he had the key card, key fob, actual keys, and Harold's Hand. They were visible but she would be coming up behind the rest of them.
Salem soon walked back out to the hall and saw the Warden was leading his group in a chase of her two escaped comrades. She followed after them. Picking up one of the stun rifles. After a minute they arrived at the entrance to the hangar.
Now the guards had them at gunpoint and Shepard had an expression that was clearly anger. He had been caught off guard. She thought this might have happened. Good thing she decided to wait on joining them. She quickly took stock of her weapons and realized that she had two shock grenades. She could use those on the line aiming at Shepard and Marcus. While she took out the Warden and his two guards.
She quietly moved up behind the Warden as she listened. "I changed the security protocols for the hangar. It can no longer be opened by anyone. In order to open it you would need the hand print of one of the five people aboard the ship. Unfortunately none of them are here."
"You limited the hangar to only those five people? Clever, I did not even hear about it." Shepard grunted in annoyance. "How did you manage that?"
"Simple I kept all five in different sections than you. Both of your comrades had access to them but one is there dying and the other is still in her cell block." The Warden answered with confidence. "Now surrender quietly so we can get this over with. I would like to go to sleep since we are still in the beginning of the night cycle."
"I will admit it is not every day that someone manages to outsmart me." Shepard nodded in appreciation.
Clink! Clink!
They could all hear the sound of metal on metal as if something was rolling. Then the Warden noticed the metal balls that had rolled behind his soldiers. Before he could call out a warning they activated and electricity spread out and hit all of the soldiers. After a moment they fell to the ground unconscious.
The Warden and his two guards spun around. But Salem was already acting; she shot one several times with the stun rifle. She then moved so the Warden was between her and the last guard. Grabbing and holding him by the scruff so he would not be able to move out of the way.
She then fired around him and the last guard went down. She then walked towards the stunned pair while dragging the Warden. "It does not matter I- arck!" He collapsed on the floor by the door. He then looked up as Salem walked to the door. "You can't- what is that?" He asked hastily as she pulled out Harold's severed hand.
Harold the guard had been one of the five individuals that were entrusted with access to the hangars. She did not know how they picked them. But Harold had been bragging about it in earshot of her table while she was in the cafeteria. Seems Harold's slip up would in the end help them with escaping the Alcatraz prison ship.
"Salem?" Shepard asked hesitantly as she slapped the severed hand against the scanner. It scanned it and then blinked green and the door began opening.
"The one and only. Come on, we are taking the Puddle-Jumper. According to some talkative guards it is repaired and fitted with everything we will need." Salem told them as she slightly turned and shot the Warden with the stun rifle.
Salem moved over and picked up Marcus, who groaned in response. "I apologize but we are going to want to pick up the pace if we do not want to get caught up in the chaos." She told him as she began running to the Puddle-Jumper.
Once she was up the ramp of the dormant ship's ramp she moved to a set of seats and laid down Marcus. He had fallen unconscious which was not a good sign. But it was also unfortunately not something she could deal with.
"You get Marcus. I will get us out of here." Salem told Shepard as she ran to the pilot's seat and spun to the controls.
She turned it on and raised the ramp and just as she perfectly timed the door to the hangar opened up while all the lights in the facility went to a red hue. She then flew the Puddle-Jumper out of the hangar.
She programmed a set of jump coordinates that would confuse anyone tracking them. Then she did a turn as Shepard came to the front. "He needs medical attention, does this ship have medical supplies?" He then looked out the window at the ship that seemed to be dead in space. "What did you do to it?"
"Supplies are up there." She pointed at a compartment that was above the pilot's station. "I put a virus into Alcatraz's systems. Every system including life support is down for a few minutes before it does a clean wipe and gets back up and running. But it also means all the doors are unlocked which will keep them too distracted to chase us."
Shepard chuckled, "get us a few systems away and once Marcus is stable I will make contact so we can join a cell or something else." Shepard declared as he took the first aid kit back to Marcus. While Salem pushed the plunger forward and the stars turned to streaks as the ship went into FTL Warp.
[I have escaped.]
