Chapter 26: Crazy Fan
The girl led Leo all the way down the last floor. Since the elevator area was now full of students trying to get down too, she didn't bother stopping to try her luck.
Together, they dashed past the other freshers, straight for the stairs. Leo still didn't have any idea why this girl was dragging him so earnestly to see her hero. Once or twice, he had tried to free his hand from her grasp but she held him in a very tight hold that he could only manage to twist his wrist a little bit. She was too strong for him to handle.
It was understandable for him, since mutants are way stronger than humans but their strength also varies due to rank differences. Leo being a D-rank can't win an arm wrestle with a C-rank who knows how to use his/her strength, regardless of quirk type.
So, Leo had no option but to pant after the brown-haired overenthusiastic girl. Midway down the second flight of stairs, she suddenly stopped running. The sudden stop caused Leo to crash awkwardly into her, causing the girl to stagger a little.
"Where are you taking me?" Leo asked after regaining his composure.
He spoke loud enough for anybody within reach to hear, but the girl pretended not to. Instead she was looking at the various corners around. Then, her search stopped when she saw a slightly opened window above them that allowed light filter into the dark stairway.
"The door leading out to the field has been closed. We have to go out through there," brown-haired said while pointing straight at the window above them.
"What?" Leo was now tired of her.
"Yes, we have to," she reaffirmed.
Leo looked up to the window and couldn't help but think the girl must have gone crazy. Even though they were close to the first floor, the height at which that window stood from the ground must be many feet high. Even for a girl with a C-rank, there are just a few things she could do against such an height. Why should she decide to break her ankle just to see Sunslayer from a close range? And why must he see the red Avenger with her?
"No, you can't. It's too high. And I'm sorry for bothering you earlier, let me go back to my dorm," Leo said persuasively.
"But I have to make up for my harsh action. Let's go see him together. Please," she begged with a sad face.
This was all too much for Leo to handle since he didn't know why she thought it was a thoughtful thing to go watch an Avenger with someone she offended. It really didn't make any sense to Leo, and he was also sure it wouldn't make any sense to anyone. But what was with that sad puppy face she was making?
"Okay," Leo relented with a frustrated sigh. She still hasn't freed Leo's hand. "But don't you value your ankle?"
"Don't worry. I won't get hurt, now let's go."
Letting Leo's hand go for the first time, she dried her wet palms, and like a gecko, she climbed the wall with her hands and feet until she got to the window where she clung onto the thick frame. With a satisfied smile, she beckoned on Leo to climb up also.
"This is the craziest person I've ever seen," Leo thought. "Why is this happening to me on the first day?"
Leo followed the path she took, using the rough edges and corners till he also got to the window frame beside her.
He wondered what would happen if any of the teachers catch them climbing up like this on their first day at the academy.
"Now you can see your Sunslayer clearly from here. Are you happy now?" Leo said.
"No, not yet, Leo," she replied with a wide smile. With her free hand she opened the glass wide open. Leo thought she only wanted to see more clearly but he realized why the window was opened wide when he felt himself diving.
The girl had pushed him out through the window.
"So, this was it," Leo thought as he continued falling. "She just wanted to have me killed."
He twisted and turned while a million thoughts played in his head as the ground raced upward towards him... Why didn't he heed the warnings? Why didn't he remember that earth is no longer for the weak? Why didn't he walk away when she appeared before him? Why did he confront her even after seeing her rank? Why is everybody this cruel? Why is he weak? Why? Why? Why?
From his judgement, he should make impact with the ground any moment. He closed his eyes tightly, while trying to turn midair so he wouldn't land on his head. But he couldn't even see the ground with the way he was turning rapidly, so he couldn't know how to position himself to avoid head impact.
Then he realized that he was taking longer time to fall than it was required. He had seen the ground from the window and he knew it wasn't that far. So, why hasn't he landed yet?
He opened his eyes only to see the girl under him, standing on the ground with a wide smile and open arms like she was trying to catch him so he wouldn't fall.
His body swayed left and right in the air as he descended slowly. After what felt like ages, he finally landed on the soft green grass of the field. The girl bent over him and smiled more like she was impressed about something Leo had no idea of.
"Stand up, let's go. He's just around the corner," she urged.
Leo was beyond surprised as he couldn't come to explain what just happened. Before he could ask any question, the girl was already running down the field.
"Hey!" He yelled, then started running after her, more confused.
He finally caught up with her and was about to throw her questions about earlier but he couldn't because Sunslayer was now fully in sight. The red man with the teachers were literally a few metres away.
The girl didn't stop running, not even when she finally got close enough. Leo had stopped advancing after he saw the academy teachers with the Avenger. He couldn't risk being apprehended by the teachers for now, since he didn't know how students are punished yet.
But the girl didn't stop. It was as if Sunslayer was the only one that existed at the moment. She didn't care about the teachers.
"My Sunslayer," she said as she was about to crash into him.
But just then, a force sent her back flying forcefully into the air. With a soft thud, she landed exactly beside Leo who was hiding by a corner from the teachers.
Concerned, Leo rushed out from his cover to her side. Her eyes were closed in pain. He tried to raise her on her feet but she had gone limp and passed out.
"Why did you do that?" Leo heard someone say from the gathering.
"I thought it was an attack. I didn't hear her coming," a male voice replied.
The voices sounded faint to Leo at he was worried for the innocent girl's state, and also at the fact that the teachers now know that he had gotten out with the girl even after the gate was locked.
"Hey, is she okay?" a deep masculine voice asked.
Leo looked up and saw a smooth smiling face over a red suit, and a strong hand in red glove stretching out towards him.
"Here, let me help you up." Sunslayer said.
