Chapter 27: Quirk Detector
Sunslayer helped Leo to his feet, leaving the girl on the ground. Leo bowed his head in dread at what his situation might turn out to be. He had defiled the teacher's orders alongside the girl, to stay inside the academy's building.
"Hey, youngling," Sunslayer said. "Why are you here?"
Leo was about to blurt out whatever was going to come out of his mouth but Sunslayer grabbed his right hand again and held it firmly in his strong hand. Leo was a little bit irritated at the man's behaviour but he couldn't say anything as he was busy thinking of a very good excuse to tell the teachers.
Still, Sunslayer wouldn't let go of his hand. He was now holding it more tightly with a curious look on his face.
"Are you an Impossible? What is your rank, boy?" Sunslayer asked.
In response, Leo raised his left hand to show the red man the digital display on his wrist.
"D-rank?" Sunslayer showed a confused look.
Leo nodded in response. He was expecting many things but this was definitely none of it. The teachers still haven't come to check on the girl or ask why they were outside, which Leo found weird enough. But why is Sunslayer holding him in such a firm grip and asking him if he was an Impossible all of a sudden?
"And what is your quirk? Cloaking?" Sunslayer persisted, completely forgetting about the girl lying faint on the grass in the hot afternoon sun.
Leo immediately broke a sweat as this question was asked. He didn't think he would find himself in such a situation so early in the academy. Hiding the fact that he didn't have a quirk at the moment was sure a dangerous game which must not be found out.
Also, Sunslayer must have realized that he was quirkless, hence the questions. He is an Avenger after all. If what Leo heard about the Avengers were true, then they are probably the most powerful mutants on Earth. So, Sunslayer might have a quirk that enables him sense auras due to quirk strength.
"My quirk...I...I...I can..." Leo stuttered.
"Leo Rayden, get over here," a smooth masculine voice commanded.
Leo was instantly grateful for the person. He looked up and saw that it was Hunter Man. He snatched his hand from Sunslayer's grip and ran off to the teacher.
"You have no excuse for this, I hope you know that. I don't know how you ended up outside with that girl even when the gate was locked, but you surely can't go unpunished. Get the girl and take her to the hospital wing, Helen will attend to her. Once she's awake, the two of you must appear before me in the staff room for your punishment. Now, go."
Leo bowed in surprising relief before scampering away past Sunslayer to grab the brown-haired girl. Easily, he picked her up and hoisted her light weight over his shoulder. Without saying a word, he walked past the teachers who were gathered round the unconscious Seven Howell.
He got to the door and saw the little teacher, Amy who appeared fine but had torn and battered clothes on. Leo understood instantly that she must have been the one who defeated Seven. She looked very young and innocent, but it seems she's that powerful as well to be able to defeat such an abnormal S-ranked student.
"I'll make sure not to judge my opponent by looks," Leo thought.
Amy pressed the button on the door with her thumb and it swung open. Leo adjusted the girl properly on his shoulder and went in.
"First year defaulter, eh?" Amy said with a smile. "Welcome to the academy, beautiful boy."
Leo knew that wasn't a welcome, but he dared not say anything as he went in.
All the while, Sunslayer stood rooted to the spot watching Leo walk away. He was about to get some information from the boy before Hunter Man called him. To him, the boy had a strange but serene energy around him.
Aside from being a mutant with the fire ability, Sunslayer being a Double-Wonder also possessed a passive quirk that enables him detect how strong or how weak a person is whenever he touches that person. It might be a less effective quirk but it sure helps him in combat, making him have an idea how tough his opponent can be.
But when he touched Leo, Sunslayer felt absolutely nothing. Being the first time experiencing this, he thought Leo was an Impossible so there was no quirk strength to detect. But he was more surprised when he saw that Leo was D-ranked and not f-ranked like he thought, which means he must have a quirk whether active or passive. Still, his quirk detection ability didn't work on the boy.
The boy had wanted to say his quirk when Hunter called him. And since he didn't want to appear desperate over a mere D-rank student, he let him go even though it still bothered him.
"This is very strange," he finally conceded while walking over to the teachers to grab Seven Howell and return to the Avenger's base through the portal. He had long overstayed his time here.

Following the computerized maps on the walls of the corridor, Leo finally got to the hospital wing. The white door slid open to allow him in.
The room stank of some strange substance. Leo tried to cover his nose with his lips while he scanned the surrounding. The hospital was a large open space with various cubicles made of plastics and curtains instead of proper walled rooms. It was currently empty save for a middle aged pretty woman who was on a flashy yellow jacket over a black shirt. Her auburn hair was tied in a neat bun and she adjusted her round glasses as she walked towards Leo.
"A first year on the first day? You freshers never fail to amaze me," she said with a sweet voice that betrayed any form of malice in her words. "Place her gently on the bed by that corner. What happened to her?"
"She... She was trying to get..." Leo was trying to explain but was cut off by the pretty healer.
"Honestly, it doesn't matter to me."
Leo had no idea if this woman was mean or friendly or neither.
She walked briskly to the girl on the bed and placed her left palm on the girl's forehead. Her eyes glowed a faint yellow as she activated her healing quirk. Almost immediately, the girl's eyes opened wide like she never fainted.
Leo was amazed by the instant healing, so he checked the healer's wrist to see her rank but there was no digital letter to indicate her rank. It seems the ranks of staff is purposely hidden from the students. But Leo can't help but conclude that this woman was at least A-Ranked.
Dusting her hands in a fake gesture, she dismissed them both. "Get out of here, troublemakers. Continue in your troubles and we'll one day become close friends."
Leo almost laughed at the woman's sarcastic warning.
Brown-haired girl jumped away from the bed, energized. As she walked out of the ward with Leo, she asked, "What happened back on the field?"
"You were stunned," Leo replied simply.
"By who?"
"One of the teachers, pretty much. I'm not so sure myself."
"Hmm," she was lost in thought.
"And you just landed both of us a punishment," Leo concluded.
"I expected that," she said.
Leo wasn't really surprised by the reply because he had seen how crazy the girl can be earlier.
"And mind if I ask, what's your name?" Leo asked.
She smiled and said, "Rosalie... Rosalie Morningbolt."
"What?!" Leo stopped dead in his tracks. "Do you belong to the same Morningbolt family as Jade?"
"Yes, Jade is my brother."
