Chapter 121: Forced Intimacy
Azrael ranks through the desert with Jane hoisted over his shoulder. The desert was absolutely drenched in the water from the rain, so each step was made more difficult by the wet sand, but Azrael had trained enough that he didn't have to worry about that!
Azrael put all of his effort into moving his legs and he managed to reach a top speed nearing thirty km/hr even with the wind and sand holding him back!
"Hold me properly! I'll stop the daemons behind you!"
Jane called out to Azrael as she pulled her sabers out and Azrael carried her in both hands so that her hands were free to attack any daemon that tried to sneak up on them!
Azrael's eyes searched the distance for any form of hideout.
They had been running for close to ten minutes already and Azrael was starting to feel tiredness creeping in.
They needed protection, not just from the daemons but also from the rain and wind.
If they stayed in a wet place with this rain, then they would likely wake up with a fever tomorrow.
Azrael kept going even as the sound of battle continued raging behind him. Jane was still using her God aspect against the daemons and that was the only thing keeping them from catching up.
No matter how fast Azrael was, the daemons with their six limbs were faster.
'What's that…?'
Azrael's eyes narrowed as he caught sight of what looked like an outcrop of rock. It was a single black structure that curved upwards, leaving some space to the side away from the wind and Azrael realized that this was exactly what he needed.
"How far away are the daemons!? Can they see us!?"
Azrael shouted to Jane and Jane shouted back.
"No!"
"Then hold on!"
Azrael suddenly crouched and doubled his speed and Jane had to wrap her hand around Azrael's neck to make sure she didn't fall from the shift in speed!
Azrael raced for the outcrop of rock and once he got to it, he slid to a stop while lying down on the floor, rolled Jane into the space under the rock and climbed in after her.
The space was small.
So small in fact that they had to huddle together in a way that would've looked intimate on any other day.
But Azrael didn't care about Jane's embarrassment as he climbed on top of her to hide under the rock, and when Jane looked like she wanted to say something, Azrael put a hand over her mouth.
"Shhhhh…"
Azrael pointed a finger to his ear, telling her to listen, and Jane allowed her heart to calm down so she could hear properly.
Just outside the outcrop, a shriek echoed through the night.
The sound of the rain drowned out the echo of multiple daemons running past them, and as the daemons moved, Azrael swallowed while palming his katana gently.
Neither of them dared to make a single move. They were hidden perfectly from the wind and the sound of rain drowned out the beating of their hearts so the daemons couldn't hear them.
Azrael was sure that so long as nothing happened at that moment, the daemons would move on.
Azrael and Jane seemed to be frozen in time as they waited, and it was only after a few minutes passed that they finally heard the sound of the daemons shrieking from a distance away.
They were gone.
Jane quickly shrugged Azrael's hand off her face with a frown and tried to push him off. She whispered furiously.
"Get the fuck off me."
"I'm not going out in the wind because you feel uncomfortable, princess. If you don't like our position, then move yourself."
Jane grit her teeth in annoyance as she considered her options, but she realized she was going to suffer more by going out. It was raining and the sand was wet, and the outcrop where they were lying was the only dry area.
Jane just turned her head away so she wasn't looking at Azrael's face. They were huddled together like lovers and Jane had never felt more embarrassed by a position in her life.
Jane whispered.
"If you touch me anywhere –"
"Oh shut up, it's not like you have anything to touch."
"What!?"
"You heard me, you fucking brick wall. Or have you forgotten who my girlfriend is?"
Azrael raised his brow at Jane and Jane felt pure rage fill her heart! If she wasn't going to get in trouble for it, she would've stabbed Azrael right there!
Azrael normally wouldn't have been poking fun at Jane like this, but her attitude pissed him off, so he couldn't help it.
Maddison was at least three times larger than Jane in the bust region and Azrael knew that it would get on Jane's nerves if he compared her to Maddison like that.
Jane's pride was her most glaring fault.
Jane didn't bother saying anything else to Azrael as the rain fell outside and it wasn't until it finally stopped an hour later that Azrael moved off her and allowed her to shift into a more comfortable position.
Jane grimaced as she moved her leg and she looked down to see that it was already starting to heal. If they waited until morning, then it would be healed enough for her to walk with it.
The both of them couldn't make any noise because they knew that daemons were still out there, so Azrael took a drink from his bottle and snacked on half a ration bar while ignoring Jane. When he was done, he spoke up.
"We need sleep. Let's take turns keeping watch. I'll sleep first, wake me up when the moon moves thirty degrees."
Before Jane could say anything, Azrael already turned his back to her and went to sleep. Jane frowned as she pulled her legs closer to try and get some warmth. The desert winds were already cold, but the rain made things worse.
She glanced at the moon and her brows furrowed.
How was she supposed to know when it moves thirty degrees?

…
"Jane, wake up."
Jane's eyes snapped open and she looked from left to right to search for danger.
Azrael waited for her to get her bearings back and he grabbed his bag and stood up.
The sun had already risen and the wind and heat managed to dry out all the water that seeped into the sand.
Last night, Jane woke Azrael up only an hour after he closed his eyes and although Azrael was pissed, he knew that Jane needed to rest because of her leg.
The injury was now healed, so Azrael sat down and spread the map out in front of him as Jane went to grab her bag.
Azrael looked around with a frown before glancing back at the map.
"We came from this region here, so we should be somewhere around here."
Azrael was trying to pinpoint exactly where they were and Jane folded her hand while looking down at the map. She noticed where Azrael had circled and asked him what that was.
"It's the destination. I figured the final point would be somewhere in the middle of the map."
Jane nodded at the logic and then asked where they were going now.
"We have to go due east. The daemons chased us off course, but we should get there before midday if we hurry."
Jane didn't bother waiting for Azrael and she simply started walking in the right direction.
Azrael narrowed his eyes at her in annoyance before folding his map and following after her. Azrael understood that he and Jane were never going to see eye to eye, but it wouldn't kill her to be civil with him just for the duration of the exercise.
He even saved her life yesterday and she didn't bother saying a single thank you throughout the night.
Azrael decided that next time, he would leave her to the daemons.
…
Jane and Azrael walked silently through the arid desert.
The sun hadn't reached its peak yet, but the heat was already becoming unbearable and Azrael thanked Thanatos that it had rained the previous night.
Azrael tied the t-shirt over his head to protect himself from the sun and he had a hand wrapped around his katana hilt.
He glanced at Jane a few meters away from him and he saw her looking around to make sure there were no daemons in the distance.
The daemons from last night had come from nowhere and Azrael had no idea where they ran off to.
He just hoped that they didn't run into any of them before they reached the final destination.
"There's something there."
Jane pointed towards the North and Azrael turned to look at it quickly, thinking it was a daemon.
But it wasn't a daemon. It was a person.
The distant silhouette of a human appeared on the horizon and Azrael watched as it slowly became more visible until it was illuminated by the sun.
"Who is that?"
