Chapter 122: Forging an Identity
"Who is that?"
Azrael spoke up as he narrowed his eyes to get a better look at the person, and he took a step forward when he noticed that the person was trying to run. They were stumbling and struggling to stay on their feet, but it was obvious they were tired!
They took a few more steps before falling flat on their face, and Azrael's eyes widened as he saw another figure appearing from the horizon!
"There's a daemon behind her! Go!"
Azrael quickly called out to Jane, and the both of them shot off towards Tiana!
Azrael didn't know how many daemons were behind the girl, so he was planning to just grab her and leave Jane to create a distraction for them.
But as Azrael got closer, he didn't see any other daemons showing up, and he immediately tossed his bag away and sped up ahead of Jane!
Jane turned in surprise when Azrael passed her, and she realized that Azrael was planning to attack the daemons alone, so she went towards the girl who fell and knelt beside her.
Azrael reached the daemon in no time, and the creature shrieked in anger as it tried to send a slash at Azrael!
Azrael ducked under the slash and grabbed the creature's arm before twisting around and sending his katana up into the creature's skull with a powerful thrust!
The daemon gurgled on its own blood before it slouched and fell forward.
Azrael looked around to make sure no more daemons were coming before he headed back toward Jane, and his eyes widened when he recognized who they saved.
It was Tiana, Francis' former girlfriend and the third member of their team.
Tiana looked like she had been walking through the desert for a whole week rather than the two days they had been here. Her face was matted with dirt and soot. Her hair was disorganized, and her clothes were torn in various places.
There were wounds all around her body that were slowly healing, her bag and water bottle were nowhere to be found, and her lips were so dry, that it looked like they would break off if anyone touched them.
What the hell happened to her?
Tiana moved her head slightly when she felt someone cover her body with their shadow, and she raised her hand towards Jane desperately.
"Wa-Water… please…"
Tiana begged like she was a minute away from death, and Azrael saw a complicated expression pass over Jane's face as she considered her next move.
"What are you doing? Give her water."
Azrael spoke up when Jane didn't move after a few seconds, and Jane turned to him with a glare.
"I only have a little left. If I give it to her now and we don't find any more, then we'll both suffer."
Azrael cursed and quickly came forward. He pushed Jane out of the way in annoyance before taking his own water and putting it against Tiana's lips.
"Drink."
Azrael allowed Tiana to drink for a few seconds before he took it away and watched Tiana gain some life back.
Tiana sighed before finally opening her eyes and looked up at Azrael with a grateful smile.
"Thank you."
Azrael nodded.
"Can you get up?"
Tiana said she could, and she stood with Azrael's help. Then Tiana turned to Jane with a glare. Jane was not even paying Tiana any attention, but she could feel Tiana's glare digging into the side of her face!
Jane's hands were folded, and she was looking towards the east, in the direction they had been going, and she spoke with an irritated tone.
"Don't look at me like that. Out here, it's survival of the fittest. If you can't handle it, you shouldn't have come to this school."
"You would have left me to die?"
Tiana seethed in a hard tone while taking a step towards Jane, and Jane turned around and answered with an emotionless face.
"Yes."
"You… selfish bitch. I thought people were wrong about you, but I guess you're really just as self-centered as everyone says."
"Okay, that's enough."
Azrael finally spoke up, breaking the tense atmosphere between the two of them. He had gone to grab his bag and he put it on while speaking.
"What happened, Tiana? Where's your bag?"
Tiana seemed to shrink in on herself when Azrael asked this, and she rubbed her hand shamefully while answering.
"I-I lost it… in the storm. There were too many daemons, and they chased me all night. I managed to use my God Aspect to send most of them in the wrong direction, and then I killed the rest, but I ran out of Divine Essence and that daemon almost got me."
Azrael looked out in the direction Tiana had come from to make sure there were really no more daemons coming.
"Do you at least have your weapon?"
Tiana nodded and brought out a long cylindrical rod from behind her. She clicked a button, and it expanded out to reveal it was a spear with a sharp metallic tip.
"Okay, Jane and I will take point while you regenerate your Essence. Once you're good to go, we'll get into the formation we discussed. We still have an hour to walk, so let's get going."
Jane started walking without waiting for either of them, and Tiana eyed Jane in annoyance before following Azrael with a friendly smile. Azrael just tightened the t-shirt around his head and ignored her.
…
The sun had finally reached its peak in the sky, and they still hadn't seen any structure that even resembled the final destination.
Azrael was in the middle of the two girls, with Jane taking the front and Tiana taking the back. Tiana had finally recovered her Divine Essence, and she activated her God Aspect to bring out three large dogs that looked like miniature wolves.
Azrael used his [Analysis] God Aspect to take a look at Tiana's information, and he saw that her blessing from Freya didn't just allow her to converse with animals, but it also gave her a similar ability to what Jane had.
…
Name: Tiana Sarrow
Celestial Guardian: Freya
God Aspect: Beast Summons
God Aspect Ranking: E Rank
God Aspect Description: The user is capable of communicating with all species of animals and can form a contract with them, allowing the user to summon an ethereal copy of the animals to help them in the middle of battle. All summons will possess 10% of the user's full strength.
…
It was a useful ability, and Azrael could see the similarity between it and Maddison's God Aspect.
The only difference was that while Maddison's summons had their full mortal strength, making them far more powerful, Tiana's summons depended on how powerful she was.
It was obvious that Maddison would be able to scale her God Aspect much faster than Tiana.
The three dogs summoned by Tiana were used as scouts behind the group, allowing them to keep moving forward without worrying about being attacked by enemies from the rear.
As they walked, Azrael could feel eyes on the back of his neck, and he knew that it was Tiana watching him. He didn't know why she was watching him so closely, but if he had to guess, it probably had to do with how he helped her earlier.
Azrael wouldn't say that he was a saint. Even though he didn't like her, he couldn't deny that Jane had been right earlier.
The entire purpose of their exam was to survive, and every person was given an equal amount of resources that would allow them to survive on their own.
Sharing your resources or giving out handouts when you didn't have enough for yourself was only going to cause you issues down the line.
So then, why did Azrael give Tiana his water?
Well, it was the same reason why he gave Jane the ration bar in the cave earlier.
Azrael was building up a new identity.
After his actions at Harold's mansion and the amount of damage it caused, Azrael knew that there would be many situations where he was not as lucky as he was back then.
People would suspect him, and there would be those who would pin all the crimes on him just because he was a child of darkness.
But Azrael also understood that how people saw you could be easily manipulated. The mere fact that a person was willing to go out of their way to do good for others would paint them in a good light for everyone else.
Azrael knew that the teachers and higher-ups were watching, and there was a chance that the students would watch the videos of their actions in the future. That meant that people would see Azrael doing acts of good for his teammates.
Azrael wasn't counting on the videos to immediately make him seem like a saint to others. But at the very least, he wouldn't seem like a villain.
Azrael's selfless actions would give him an invisible form of protection that would prevent people from immediately pointing fingers at him for every crime. There would be doubt in their hearts when they remembered his past deeds.
And as far as there is doubt, Azrael could find a way to change their minds.
