Chapter 124: Useless Member
Jane hated everything about Tiana.
Tiana's nonchalant attitude towards life and the way she always made the worst possible choice every time was the exact opposite of what Jane's life was like, and this made Jane resent Tiana.
Right from when Jane found out Tiana was dating Francis, even when everyone knew what type of person Francis was, Jane concluded that Tiana was horrible at making life decisions, and Tiana's actions have constantly proven Jane right.
Jane turned to Azrael with a serious look on her face.
"I can't go anywhere with her anymore. I don't care what you think, she is only going to hold us back."
Azrael closed his eyes and sighed. He couldn't even refute Jane's statement since it was true.
Tiana was the most useless piece of baggage in this entire desert.
"Wait! Wait, stop! I'm sorry about the water, but that doesn't mean you can abandon— Mmph!"
Azrael put his hand over Tiana's mouth and glared at her.
"Why don't you take a fucking megaphone and scream into it? I'm sure the daemons on the other side of the desert couldn't hear you. What part of 'be fucking silent' don't you understand?"
Tiana blushed in embarrassment, and Azrael pulled back and scratched the back of his head before sheathing his sword.
He looked from Tiana to Jane and finally made a decision.
"We can't leave her."
Tiana smiled and Jane frowned, but Azrael wasn't finished yet.
"But that doesn't mean we'll put up with your bullshit forever, Tiana. If you make any mistakes again, even the smallest step out of line, then you're gone."
Tiana seemed to deflate at Azrael's words, and Jane just sheathed her saber before turning away.
"She's only going to cause more problems, but I guess whatever you say goes. You're the leader, after all."
Jane's sarcasm wasn't lost on Azrael, and he watched as she started heading back the way they had come.
Tiana's stunt threw them off their course, and it would take a lot more time for them to reach the final destination now.
Azrael helped Tiana to her feet and told her to keep up before he followed after Jane.
…
This time, there was a lot more tension between the three of them as they trudged across the arid desert.
Jane had taken the front as usual, and Azrael was in the middle, leaving Tiana to watch their backs, but there was a sort of physical discomfort present in the group that hadn't been there before.
Earlier, it was Tiana who had been angry at Jane because Jane refused to give her any water. That caused some tension, but it hadn't been that serious.
But now, both Jane and Azrael felt completely irritated by the time and energy Tiana forced them to waste, and from the look of depression on her face, Tiana knew she had messed up.
They had to take another drink of water from their bottles after they began moving since they had practically dehydrated themselves fighting those daemons.
And although Azrael was hesitant, he gave Tiana a drink from his bottle since he knew that she was helpless without it.
Even though she wasn't the most useful fighter, it was better to make sure she was battle-ready in case they ran into a daemon.
They walked for a few minutes without any form of communication between the three of them when they suddenly heard an explosion echo through the desert!
BOOM!
They all turned as one in the direction the sound had come from, and they heard another explosion go off a few seconds after the first!
In the distance, a massive dust cloud was starting to rise in the air, and Azrael narrowed his eyes at it curiously.
"What the hell…?"
"We should check it out."
Jane suddenly spoke up, and Azrael was surprised by her willingness to go towards an unknown danger.
Azrael gave her a curious look, and Jane explained herself.
"The only things out here are the daemons and us. The daemons don't have the ability to create explosions, so that means—"
"It's another student."
Azrael finished Jane's sentence with a frown.
Her reasoning made sense, and Azrael found himself agreeing with her. They were close to the final destination already, and from the recent trend, Azrael deduced that only members of their team were in this part of the desert.
That meant the person creating that explosion was either Gerald or Henry.
Regardless of which one it was, they would be a welcome addition to the group.
At least they would be able to cover for Tiana's lack of firepower.
BOOM!
Another explosion went off in the distance, this time a little further ahead, and Azrael realized that the person was running past them.
They needed to get to them before they went too far!
"Let's go!"
Azrael took off running, and the two girls followed behind him quickly.
Azrael could feel his stamina dropping due to not eating anything substantial in close to two days now, but he was a demigod, so things like hunger weren't enough to stop him from fighting properly, and he knew it was the same for the two girls.
They continued running forward as the explosions went off two more times, and as they approached the site of the explosions, they came upon a sight that was beyond anything they could have predicted.
It turned out that Azrael had been right in his earlier assumption that the person running was a member of their team, but it wasn't just one person, it was both of them.
Henry was running across the desert without any shoes on his feet, and on his back, he carried Gerald, who was wielding a large bow and cocking an arrow.
Gerald turned around and unleashed an ethereal-looking arrow towards a large group of daemons that were chasing them.
The arrow slashed through three daemons at the same time, taking them out.
Henry's feet glowed with a bright yellow light, and his footsteps began to leave yellow marks on the ground, and as the daemons stepped on the yellow footprints, another massive explosion erupted across the desert, blowing many of the daemons away!
Azrael was stunned for a moment by the sight, but he didn't allow it to stop him as he quickly followed after Jane!
The three of them were coming from the western part of the desert, and they were running at a north-east angle towards Henry and Gerald, who were racing towards the North with the large pack of daemons on their tail.
The way they were going, they would collide with Henry and Gerald before the daemons could get to them, but that would have only been true if the daemons weren't immediately drawn to the sound of their running!
Many daemons that had been chasing Henry and Gerald broke off from the pack and began to head straight for Azrael's group, and Azrael shouted for Jane to use her God Aspect as he quickly changed directions and began running due north, in the same direction as Henry and Gerald!
Jane did as she was told, and her lightning dragon came down with undeniable fury, taking out three daemons and throwing many others off their feet!
She joined Azrael in running towards Henry, and as they got closer, Azrael finally noticed that Gerald's right leg was wrapped in some sort of splint.
He was injured.
"Where are you going!?"
Azrael shouted to Henry once he was near enough, and Henry turned in surprise once he heard his voice. Henry had been so focused on running away from the daemons that he didn't even notice Azrael approaching.
"Gerald!"
Henry called on Gerald to answer for him, and Gerald shouted with a frown.
"There's a bridge, about three kilometers away!"
"How'd you know!?"
"I fucking saw it!"
Gerald frowned at Azrael in anger, and Azrael saw that Gerald's eyes had changed from their regular black to pure green.
Gerald's God Aspect from Athena gave him unbelievable marksmanship with all forms of ranged weapons and amazing eyesight over a long range.
Even though Gerald was only an E Rank now, he could already see more than four kilometers away without even trying!
Azrael nodded, and he turned around to make sure that Jane and Tiana were following as well.
Both of them were right behind him, and although Tiana was falling behind, she was still trying her best to keep up.
"Don't stand behind me!"
Henry shouted out to the others as his legs started to glow with an orange light, and all three of them moved out of his way as his footsteps left yellow marks on the floor.
The daemons following after them stepped onto the marks, causing them to explode, and Azrael scoffed in his heart. Even without reading Henry's system information, Azrael could tell that Henry's ability had something to do with making his divine essence explode.
It was far too broken.
The group continued running away from the daemons following behind them, and they felt fatigue beginning to creep into their bodies. The hot sun and dry air made it difficult to breathe, and the vast desert in front of them looked like it would never end.
But finally, after twenty minutes of nonstop running, they saw a massive structure appearing in the horizon.
It was huge, like a castle sitting in the middle of the desert.
There was a long trench running along the desert ground separating them from the castle, and in the middle of the trench, swaying in the gentle desert winds, was a wooden rope bridge.
