Strongest Demigod System

Chapter 125: Survivors Mentality

Azrael knew that the bridge would never hold their weight.

Just the sight of the wooden rope bridge and the way it swayed told Azrael that it was too weak.

At the speed they were running, if all five of them tried to get on that bridge at the same time, then it was definitely going to break.

The others seemed to have also come to the same conclusion as Azrael, but none of them stopped running since they knew that the daemons behind them were far more dangerous.

A demon shrieked from somewhere behind them, and Azrael heard Tiana scream as she was almost grabbed.

Tiana was the slowest out of all of them, even with the extra load Henry was carrying, and Azrael turned and grabbed her by the hand before she could stumble to the floor to drag her along.

Henry let loose another one of his explosions to create some distance between them and the daemons, but the explosions had the added effect of making more daemons hone in on their positions, increasing the numbers chasing them.

They reached the bridge, and Henry quickly spoke up.

"We can't fit together!"

The bridge was too narrow, and it was obviously made so that it would only fit one or two people at a time. If all of them climbed it together, then it would break!

Azrael told Henry to just go ahead!

"Take Gerald across first, we'll figure something out!"

Henry immediately started to run across the bridge!

The daemons were closing in on them from behind, and Azrael drew his sword as he waited with bated breath for Henry to get to the other side.

But when Henry was only halfway through, a daemon reached them and immediately tried to attack!

Jane activated her God Aspect, sending the daemon flying with her lightning dragon, and Azrael slashed across the face of a daemon that jumped at them from the side! Another daemon grabbed Tiana and she just managed to use her summons to kill it before it could get her!

Azrael decided to simply bite the bullet and risk it!

"RUN!"

Azrael quickly turned and started to run across the bridge, with Jane and Tiana following behind him.

Immediately they put their combined weight on the bridge, Azrael felt the entire thing slack downwards, like a rubber band trying to lift something heavy!

The daemons were blind, so many of them didn't even know there was a gorge in front of them, and they simply ran straight over the edge of the gorge, and down into the dark valley below.

But many daemons managed to get on the bridge as well, increasing the weight and making it slack even more.

A daemon shrieked as it raced across the taut bridge rope and leaped after the children! It drew its arms back and tried to take a swipe at them, but the lightning dragon appeared from the side, taking it down!

Azrael turned around and slashed a daemon that was trying to claw its way across the side of the bridge, and he turned sharply as he heard a voice shout from behind him.

"HELP!"

It was Tiana, and she was being dragged back by a daemon that latched onto her hair!

Tiana's eyes were filled with terror, and her Astral Dogs were trying to help her fight the daemons, but they were being overwhelmed by the sheer number of them!

Azrael quickly told Jane to run, and Jane felt her resolve waver when she saw him going back!

"Wait! Are you insane!? Leave her!"

"Just run!"

Azrael shouted at Jane angrily, and Jane cursed as she sent her lightning dragon to take out some of the daemons following them!

Jane had no idea what Azrael was thinking by going back for Tiana, but she wasn't going to stick around to find out!

Henry and Gerald had already made it to the other end of the bridge since they were the first to leave, and Jane quickly ran to catch up to them!

Azrael reached Tiana, grabbed her hand and then slashed across the arm that was holding her hair, making it release her!

He grabbed her around the waist and threw her away from the daemons before he said something that shocked everybody to the core!

"I'm cutting the rope!"

Jane was the first person to assimilate what Azrael had just said, and when she did, she cursed and doubled her effort to get away!

Tiana tried to scramble to her feet quickly, but neither of them was able to move fast enough as they heard the unmistakable sound of a blade slashing through the air!

SLASH!

The bridge went slack, and the bridge fell!

Azrael held onto the end of the bridge where he had cut and watched as the daemons all scrambled to try and get their feet under them!

The daemons were blind, but they weren't stupid, and they knew they were falling, so they were trying to find anything to hold onto.

But most of them weren't able to grab anything before the bridge fell from beneath them, and they were sent tumbling into the darkness of the gorge below them!

Jane grabbed hold of the rope before it could fall out from under her, and she braced herself for the impact she knew was coming!

"KYAAAA!!"

Tiana screamed as she felt the ground under her feet disappear, and in her shock, she wasn't able to get a good hold of the bridge!

She began to fall into the darkness below along with the other daemons, and for a split second, she thought that this was where she was going to die.

But then, she felt someone grab her hand!

Tiana looked up and felt pure relief course through her veins when she saw that it was Azrael who had saved her.

Azrael was holding his sword between his teeth, and his other hand was holding the rope bridge tight as they swung towards the far wall of the trench!

He braced himself for the impact that was coming and grunted as his back slammed against the wall.

Bam!

'Fuck!'

Azrael cursed internally to try and ride out the pain. And once he was sure that he hadn't broken anything in the swing, he raised Tiana up and allowed her to grab hold of the rope herself.

Tiana was breathing heavily, and she dared to look down at the trench below.

It was dark and ominous, and with all the daemons that had fallen in there, Tiana knew that she wouldn't have lived if Azrael hadn't caught her.

He saved her life.

Tiana looked at Azrael with tears in her eyes, and Azrael grabbed his sword from his teeth and growled at her.

"Stop staring and climb for fuck's sake!"

Tiana was jolted out of her trance by Azrael's shout, and she quickly started to climb the rope. Once she was past him, Azrael put his sword in the sheath and then followed after her.

The climb to the top wasn't that difficult since Azrael had cut the rope at a point near the middle of the bridge, and after only three minutes, they were being helped up by Jane and Henry.

Once Azrael felt solid ground under his feet again, he flopped to the ground and released a tired breath.

His heart was racing, and there was an electric feeling coursing through his veins at that moment.

Like pure adrenaline racing across his body.

The knowledge that he had almost died and the fact that they managed to survive that entire ordeal brought out a sense of pride in Azrael's heart, and Azrael didn't know when he slowly started to laugh.

The laugh morphed into something loud and unbearable, and the others watched as he put his hand over his face and tried to come down from his laughing fit.

Once Azrael was done getting it out of his system, he sat up and sighed.

Henry was looking at Azrael like he was only seeing him for the first time ever, and when Azrael raised a brow at him, Henry shook his head.

"You're absolutely mental. How did you even think you would survive cutting the rope?"

Azrael shrugged as he stood.

In truth, Azrael didn't know that he would survive.

That was the complete truth.

But Azrael had been in so many life-and-death situations over the past few days that something like this just didn't matter to him.

Azrael was someone who had fought against a personification of a god in the past.

If he was capable of moving forward when faced with Jahosabeth, then he would never have any trouble moving forward when faced with something like this.

"You saved my life."

Tiana spoke up from the side when she finally found her voice, and Gerald scoffed.

"If you weren't so useless, then he wouldn't have needed to save you. Didn't you hear him say that he was cutting the rope?"

Tiana's face turned slightly red from anger, but she quickly lost all that anger when she realized that Gerald was right about her being useless. Tiana looked down at the ground and mumbled an apology to Azrael.

Azrael spoke while turning around.

"It doesn't matter. We all made it, that's what matters."

Behind them, the giant castle stood in all its imposing glory, and the students all took in a collective breath as they prepared themselves.

It was time to head for the final destination.
