Chapter 311: Unrequited Emotions

Rufus grumbled something under his breath after Agiel brushed off his concern and he frowned while turning down to focus on tying his boots! Rufus didn't know why he even bothered with that bitch! He should have grown past caring about her by now, but for some reason seeing her so injured still managed to make him want to protect her!

'I'm such an idiot. How can I care about someone who doesn't even give a damn about me!?'

Rufus reprimanded himself angrily and he sighed internally as he tried to calm down again.

No one other than Rufus and Agiel knew what had actually happened to break their relationship, and if Rufus had his way no one would ever find out because of how embarrassing it was. In truth, everyone in the Enforcers thought that Rufus had been following Agiel around because he idolized her, but that had only been half the truth. The whole truth was that Rufus was in love with Agiel. Rufus had fallen in love with her from the very moment he set eyes on her, but Rufus knew that as a Lieutenant he was nowhere near the level needed to even think about talking to Agiel, not to talk of trying to date her. Rufus dedicated himself to getting as close to Agiel as possible while trying to hide his affection for her as simple admiration and respect, and for a while it worked, but the longer Rufus stayed close to Agiel the more he fell in love with her! Agiel was beautiful, strong, and dedicated to her work! She had a charm that no other woman could hope to match and Rufus felt the love he had for her becoming too much to bear!

But Rufus still knew that he was not fit to even think about standing beside Agiel, and he would have continued to think that way for the rest of his life, if not for one conversation that he overheard between Agiel and a few other women in the Enforcers. The women had been talking about what sort of man they were interested in and somehow they got Agiel to admit that she would only be with a man who was capable of defeating her. That single statement lit a fire of dedication in Rufus' heart and Rufus took to his training like a madman! Rufus trained from dusk till dawn and broke his body to pieces in his desire to become stronger!

The only thing that kept Rufus going throughout his training was the thought that he would finally be able to stand beside Agiel! If he just kept going, he would eventually become strong enough to confess to her! But all of Rufus' ambitions had been for nothing! Because even after he gained enough power to finally be recognized as a Commander and he stood on the same stage as Agiel, Agiel just didn't care to look at him. Rufus had put in all that effort into training, but Agiel didn't even look like she cared! She still treated him like he was nothing! This almost made Rufus give up on his dream os confessing, but he knew that he couldn't give up so easily! Rufus built up the courage he needed to finally confess to Agiel that he was in love with her, but the only thing he got from Agiel was a blank stare and a simple sentence that broke his world.

"Even if a sheep wears wolf skin, that doesn't make it any less of a sheep. You are not the one I am looking for."

Rufus had felt anger fill his heart when he heard what Agiel said! Who the hell did she think she was to call him a sheep!? Did she have any idea what he had done for her!? Did she know how far he had pushed himself just to stand beside her!? In his anger, Rufus tried to grab Agiel, but the only thing that Rufus remembered was a fist flying towards his face and waking up the next day in a hospital room. That had been the last time that Rufus and Agiel spoke as anything resembling friends, and if not for this mission, then Rufus would have preferred to stay far away from Agiel for the rest of his life.

Rufus knew he should have been with Agiel and Luthor when the dragons attacked earlier, but he had been occupied by an incident that happened in California, and he couldn't get back quickly enough to help out! But once Rufus came back and saw the injuries that Agiel had suffered, he felt the worry and love he had for her coming to his heart again, and he couldn't stop himself from talking to her. It was just too bad that Agiel still didn't give a damn about him. Rufus shook his head and decided to get himself back under control! It didn't matter what Agiel thought about him! He was here to complete the mission, and once he was done with that, he wouldn't have to be around Agiel anymore!

Liam was standing at the side with his hands folded, and as he looked over the three Commanders there with them, he felt like they stood a much better chance of winning the upcoming battle! Keith should have also been a part of this mission, but the Enforcers needed him to stay back and help out with missions here on Earth. Keith was already close to becoming an S Rank, and since the Enforcers were sending three of their Commanders into the gate, they needed Keith to cover for the reduced manpower.

Ring~ ring~

Liam's phone suddenly rang and brought him out of his thoughts and he grabbed it quickly to see that it was the Chief Commander of the Enforcers calling him. Liam's brow immediately furrowed in shock, and he picked up the call and spoke respectfully.

"Sir."

The Chief Commander of the Enforcers was someone who was on the same level as the president of the entire fucking country! He was the only man capable of sending Enforcers to any part of the country that he wished with only a few words, so Liam was shocked that someone with that much power would be calling him! But as Liam listened to the Chief Commander's words, the worry on his face only grew until his entire face was downcast. Liam looked over at Agiel, and Agiel raised a brow as Liam came over and gave her the phone.

"It's the Chief Commander. He wants to speak to you."

Agiel frowned at Liam's words, but she didn't waste any time as she took the phone and answered respectfully.

"Sir. This is Commander Agiel. Yes, I'm there. Wait… now? Sir, this is an important mission. The entire city could be at risk. Of course, sir, there are others here as well. But… okay, sir, of course. I understand."

Agiel frowned once the phone clicked off, and she released a tired huff before she stood up and spoke to Liam.

"Sorry, I have orders to be in Australia now. They need my gift for a mission over there."

Liam already knew that this was what Agiel would say, but the other Commanders and superhumans were surprised when they heard it. They all knew that Agiel was one of the most important parts of this mission! Her power could literally change the tide of battle if it was applied properly! So losing her like this was a big blow to their numbers! But there was nothing that any of them could do since the Chief Commander was the one who asked for it. Agiel was required by law to answer the Chief Commander's orders regardless of what she was currently doing.

Agiel looked at her watch to check the time, and she spoke.

"A helicopter will be here to pick me up in a few minutes. In that time, I can help with anything you need."
