Chapter 884: New Clues
The consul agreed to leave, and Lan Xue immediately sent the photo to Lan Xing, asking him to help search for the target's whereabouts. The target had become the key to the whole matter. As long as he was found, there would be room for maneuver; otherwise, they'd fall into a passive state again. After Lan Xue finished handling the matters, Luo Zheng, with a solemn expression, said, "Why would the Song family hide this person? If they're worried we'll find out, why not just kill him outright? Given the Song family's character, they wouldn't care about ethics."
"What do you mean?" Lan Xue asked in surprise.
"I'm not sure, but the whole thing doesn't seem like Song Tao is directing it. With Song Tao's acumen, he definitely wouldn't leave anyone alive; he'd opt for total silence. His methods against us wouldn't be so mild. Placing assassins at the police station entrance seems very impulsive. If it were Song Tao, I'm sure he wouldn't just arrange two people or just one place; there would be serial killing tricks waiting for us." Luo Zheng analyzed, his face thoughtful.
"You're right. I overlooked this issue. If it's not Song Tao, then who? Could it be it isn't the Song family? But then, who else could set up this situation besides the Song family?" Lan Xue also seemed confused, speaking softly, a touch of worry on her typically cool face.
"Forget it. The target is the key. Find him and everything will be resolved smoothly. What about the contact person, any news?" Luo Zheng asked, pretending to be relaxed.
"No news. It's as if they've vanished into thin air. Others we stationed in the Gambling City are tracking and investigating. If there's news, we'll be notified immediately," Lan Xue explained.
Luo Zheng fell into thought, his gaze drifting past the window to the high-rise buildings further away, distracted by the sunlight streaming in. In the sky above the buildings, the deep blue sky was clear as a wash, with a few white clouds floating idly. Suddenly, Luo Zheng's unfocused gaze caught a glint of light from a certain floor of a tall building ahead, making him pause. He stared intently, but the light was gone; a four-sided building stood silently.
"Hmm?" Luo Zheng's battlefield instincts told him the light was unusual, like a mirror reflection. It certainly wasn't from curtain wall glass reflection. He started to get suspicious, quickly retreating behind the window and pulling down the curtains to block the view. He said to Lan Xue, who had a puzzled face, "Something's off. I suspect someone's surveilling us from outside."
"Outside?" Lan Xue was startled, then realized angrily, "Seems like our opponents have figured out our location and are coming for us. Should we fight back?"
"No rush, let's see." Luo Zheng replied, falling into thought.
The two chatted in the room, and unknowingly, it was noon. The consul arranged for someone to deliver lunch, and at two o'clock in the afternoon, Lan Xue's phone rang. It was Lan Xing, who quickly answered, listened for a moment, then excitedly put on the speakerphone and said to Luo Zheng, "Found the target!"
"That's great, where is he?" Luo Zheng excitedly asked.
"Airport customs inspection found the target leaving the country, flying to Palm Island. That's a wealthy district globally. Do you want to vacation there?" Lan Xing's voice came through the phone.
"Immediately find a way to get us there," Luo Zheng was elated, saying.
"Can I come along?" Lan Xing teased, "I haven't been to such an advanced place."
Luo Zheng looked at Lan Xue with difficulty. Lan Xue thought for a moment, then nodded and said, "Okay, go make arrangements."
After hanging up, Lan Xue looked at Luo Zheng and said seriously, "She's an intelligence officer; her combat capability is limited. Technically, she shouldn't be directly on the front line, but she's my sister and has a responsibility for revenge. If she finds out in the future that I avenged without her, she'd hate me forever. I'll keep an eye on her then."
"Alright, let's prepare. After arranging everything, have the consul drive secretly to get us out. I didn't expect the target to flee to Palm Island, quite enjoying life." Luo Zheng said.
"Hmm, I'll go find the consul," Lan Xue agreed, hurrying out.
Luo Zheng leaned on the sofa, contemplating the next moves of the Song family, clenching his fist, a fighting spirit surged from him. About an hour later, Lan Xue entered and informed Luo Zheng everything was ready. They'd be leaving via diplomatic channel without plane tickets, departing immediately.
Luo Zheng didn't care about the channel, agreed without issue, and took his belongings with him. They secretly arrived at the underground garage and got into a black business car already running. It had a miniature national flag, with the consul and a driver inside.
"This is my work car, equivalent to our national territory; no one will check along the way, don't worry," the consul said, patting the driver's shoulder.
The driver started the car immediately, slowly driving forward. As they left the consulate, Luo Zheng glanced at the surrounding high-rise buildings, vaguely sensing lurking danger. But the feeling wasn't tangible. The car continued forward, about two kilometers ahead when they encountered a police checkpoint. The black business car rolled slowly ahead.
When the police saw the black business car, they didn't dare stop it, let it pass immediately, which made Luo Zheng exhale in relief while also becoming alert. Why were the police setting up checkpoints here? Checking on whom? Present company? Thinking this, Luo Zheng glanced at Lan Xue, who had a solemn expression, seemingly also pondering something.
Continuing forward, they encountered three more checkpoints, but none of them stopped the car, passing directly, which made Luo Zheng completely relax and say to the consul with a smile, "This car is really commanding."
"It's not the car, it's the nation's power that's commanding," the consul smiled, "because of people like you, our national sovereignty and position aren't challenged. Countries are intimidated, and they won't do anything against us. Truthfully, we diplomats have to thank you. It's because of you that we stand firm."
"You're joking; we're just regular pawns," Lan Xue said.
"Pawns are great; once they cross the river, there's no turning back, only standing tall and moving forward, falling on the path of charge," the consul said with some emotion.
Chatting for a while, they arrived at the airport unknowingly. Luo Zheng then realized the consul personally sent them. Their identities were consul's assistant staff, directly using the diplomatic channel to board without inspection. When the plane was in the sky, Luo Zheng exhaled a breath of relief but grew cautious as he thought of Song Tao's ruthless means.
"What's wrong?" Sitting next to him, Lan Xue sensitively noticed Luo Zheng's emotional change, held Luo Zheng's hand gently, and asked, resting her head.
"I'm wondering, will the Song family make up for their mistakes by going all out on the target?" Luo Zheng lowered his voice, a firm gaze mixed with worry. If the Song family got the initiative first, it'd be troublesome.
