Chapter 894: Ambushed by Assassins
The off-road vehicle reached an intersection and waited for the red light. To ease the tense atmosphere, Shi Feng turned on the radio, and a gentle piano tune flowed out, calming the mind. Luo Zheng looked ahead, his eyes softening a bit. These days, Luo Zheng's nerves had been highly strung, from Gambling City to Palm Island, and then back to Beijing, without a good rest, feeling faintly tired.
"It's already mealtime. There's a nice restaurant up ahead. How about we grab a bite?" Shi Feng suggested.
Luo Zheng indeed felt a bit hungry. After a night flight, arriving in Beijing past eleven, he got off the plane, found a hotel, then came near the Song family, and inexplicably fought with the guards. He hadn't eaten anything until now, so he nodded and said, "Alright, let's just grab something to eat."
The green light turned on, and Shi Feng drove through the green light. Just as they reached the center of the intersection, Luo Zheng keenly noticed the green light flickering and turning red, which meant the red light in the other direction had turned green. He was taken aback and shouted, "No good, the traffic signal is being controlled. We're being watched."
"Honk! Honk!" Suddenly, a few piercing horn sounds erupted.
Turning his head, Luo Zheng saw a truck roaring towards them. Because of the green light, it hadn't braked, and was about to crash into them. Shi Feng also realized the issue, stomped on the brake, and turned the steering wheel, but it was already too late. The truck roared in, slamming into the front of the off-road vehicle, sending it spinning off to one side, flipping over, and skidding across the ground, sparks flying.
The two inside the car had no time to react. After the car was hit, they flipped over inside, unable to move. Fortunately, at the critical moment, Shi Feng turned the steering wheel. If they had continued straight, the truck would have hit the door, possibly sending the car flying rather than skidding on its side.
The truck driver desperately turned the steering wheel, hit the brakes, and eventually stopped after rushing forward some distance, looking at the skidding, overturned off-road vehicle with a pale face. Fortunately, the speed was only about sixty miles per hour; if it had been any faster, the situation would have been more serious.
The off-road vehicle lay on its side, the driver's side hitting the ground. Shi Feng was pinned under Luo Zheng, unable to move. Once the car stopped, Luo Zheng quickly reached to open the door, but it wouldn't budge. Annoyed, Luo Zheng said, "How are you? The door won't open. I'll have to kick it open."
"Not dead yet, go ahead." Shi Feng said angrily.
Luo Zheng drew his leg back and kicked hard again, the impact sending a massive force onto Shi Feng beneath him. Shi Feng grunted, and seeing the door loosening, Luo Zheng kicked again, forcing it open, and quickly crawled out. Just as he reached the door, an overwhelming sense of danger swept over him, shocking Luo Zheng. Instinctively, he rolled forward rapidly.
"Whoosh." The sound of a sniper rifle firing. Luo Zheng felt a sharp pain in his shoulder and realized he'd been hit. Using his hands to support himself on the ground after falling, he propelled himself forward with an agile roll, just as another sniper bullet whizzed by, hitting right where he had just been.
Luo Zheng knew he was locked onto by a sniper, and was dreadfully shocked. With power in his hands, he slapped the ground and, before getting up, darted to the side as quick as a weasel, taking cover behind the overturned car, shouting, "There's a sniper, don't move!"
Inside the car, Shi Feng heard the unusual sound. Though initially unsure of what it was, after hearing Luo Zheng's words, his face changed drastically. He didn't dare to move, quickly unbuckled his seat belt, and drew his gun. At that moment, Luo Zheng shouted, "Hold steady, I'll get the car upright for you."
Shi Feng nodded quickly, bracing himself. Luo Zheng, leaning against the car's overturned roof, pushed with his feet, and the car, flipped upright, hit the ground with its four wheels. Luo Zheng quickly crouched, shrinking under the car. Shi Feng, after steadying himself, attempted to open the driver's side door, pushing a few times with no luck. Luckily, the car window was shattered, and Shi Feng quickly crawled out through it.
Both took cover behind the car, seeing all vehicles at the intersection had stopped. Luo Zheng's face was cold and furious, saying angrily, "The sniper is in that tall building ahead, about the 26th floor."
"Leave it to me." Shi Feng said, his face livid, as he pulled out his phone and made a call.
Luo Zheng, wary of the sniper not retreating, didn't dare expose himself, cautiously observing his surroundings. Seeing the truck driver approaching, he quickly shouted, "You, hands on your head, lie on the ground, don't move."
The truck driver was momentarily stunned. Seeing the gun in Luo Zheng's hand, he immediately realized this wasn't a simple accident. His face turned white as he panicked and began to flee, but after only a couple of steps, there was a "whoosh" as a sniper bullet flew in, instantly hitting the driver's head, causing it to explode, red and white matter splattering.
"Bastard." Seeing this scene, Luo Zheng's face turned livid with fury, his fists pounding the car, making a "thud" sound. This had transcended ordinary crime; it was a battlefield. The opponent wasn't typical bandits. Luo Zheng's eyes turned blood-red in anger, but fearing the sniper, he had no choice but to huddle under the car.
"What's happening?" Lan Xue's voice came through the earpiece.
"At the intersection of Construction Road and Ai Hua Road, sniper." Luo Zheng immediately said.
"I just left my grandfather's place and am nearby. I'll be there right away." Lan Xue said anxiously.
"Be careful." Luo Zheng quickly reminded, quietly peeking ahead before swiftly ducking back down, continuing, "At the east side of the intersection, Ai Hua Building, about the 26th floor."
"Understood." Lan Xue replied.
"Are your people coming?" Shi Feng asked in a low voice, his face dark, his palms sweaty from gripping the gun, an intense killing intent emanating from him. As a deputy bureau chief, being schemed against and almost killed left Shi Feng seething with unvented rage, longing to charge out and fight.
Seeing Shi Feng's eager expression, Luo Zheng quickly pressed down on Shi Feng's shoulder, whispering, "Don't move."
"You're hurt?" Shi Feng, seeing Luo Zheng's shoulder stained with blood, was shocked and hastily asked, "Is it serious, let me have a look, bandage it up."
"Just a minor wound." Luo Zheng said coldly, feeling the bullet lodged within his muscle, thankful for the tight clothing. Otherwise, being hit this way could have maimed or killed him. Anger surged within him, his icy gaze filled with lethal intent, "I suspect it's linked to the kidnapping case. Looks like we can't stay uninvolved."
"Same group? Can't be, can it?" Shi Feng asked, surprised, looking at Luo Zheng, "The kidnapper should be hiding now, not brazenly killing, right? Besides, they went after the Song family. They have no reason to target us. The Song family didn't want the police involved; I pose no threat to them."
"Just an instinct." Luo Zheng said coldly, gripping his gun, his icy eyes bursting with intense killing intent, thoroughly enraged.
