Chapter 642: A Reunion and Leaving the Capita [1]

The girl's breath hitched as she stepped into the corridor of the empty building. Her throat burned for water, and her stomach growled from hunger.

When last did I even eat something? she vaguely remembered it was about two days ago. The only reason she had lasted this long was because she was an Awakened.

Awakened were superhuman—naturally stronger than normal humans. Their hunger tolerance rate was high, but water... water wasn't something they could go long without.

"I have to hurry!" Even though her vision was blurry, she didn't stop. She kept pushing forward, even as her body screamed at her to give up.

Soon, she drew close to the battlefield, but before she could leave through the doors of the building, she heard distant footsteps.

Hurriedly, she bolted into a nearby classroom, peeking through a hole in the door.

There were over a hundred demons—all heading toward the direction of the fighting.

Fortunately, because they were so focused on the ongoing battle, none of them noticed her presence inside the classroom.

After the group passed, she slowly emerged and continued toward the battlefield.

Meanwhile, outside, Nox and the others had successfully slaughtered the demons approaching from the outer perimeter. Their only remaining problem was the archers from the Order of the Flaming Rose.

"Even if we take off now, they'll still be a headache," Nox frowned. "I need to get rid of the problem from the root."

A wild idea flashed in his mind. Without hesitation, he stomped the ground—

BOOM!

A massive ice pillar shot up beneath his feet, launching him high above the battlefield.

The archers narrowed their eyes.

"Is this guy mad?!"

"Shoot him down!"

Dozens of arrows tore through the air.

But Nox didn't even flinch.

His eyes glinted with cold light as he raised his hand. "Die."

CRACK!

In an instant, the sky above the rooftop shattered as countless ice spikes exploded outward from the rising pillar.

SCHLICK! THUD!

One by one, the archers were impaled mid-fire, frozen spears tearing through their armor like paper. Screams rang out—only to be silenced just as quickly.

Some tried to retreat, but there was no escape.

It was raining ice spikes!

Sensing several demons approaching from behind, Nox spun mid-air and flung his arm to the side—another barrage of jagged ice exploded outward like shrapnel.

SHUNK!

"GUARGH!"

Some demons were instantly headshotted, their skulls bursting as purple blood splattered across the ground like paint on cracked canvas.

Others weren't so lucky.

One had its chest caved in, impaled through the heart. It dropped like a stone, twitching once before going still.

Another lost both legs in an instant—only to be skewered through the face a moment later.

Screams echoed.

The entire charging horde staggered. Some tried to retreat—but it was too late.

CRASH!

A massive spike erupted from below, piercing six demons in a row. Their bodies stacked like meat on a skewer.

Nox observed the one-sided massacre with a cold gaze, then slammed his foot down on the pillar—

BOOOOM!

The ground beneath the charging demons erupted into a forest of frost.

Dozens of ice lances burst from below, skewering demons from every direction.

SCHICK! CRUNCH! SHRIEEEEK!

Within seconds, the battlefield was littered with frozen corpses, their faces twisted in pain and disbelief.

No one spoke. All eyes were on the black-haired boy atop the towering pillar.

"Even amongst the Expert Rank, he's on a different level entirely," Bridget whispered, eyes flashing. It was as if she were watching a certain someone all over again.

This power… it doesn't make any sense, she frowned. At this point, if someone told her Nox had sold his soul to become this strong, she would believe it instantly.

"Is he still… human?"

"Damn, why do I feel safe around him?"

"If he had been here earlier… maybe so many students would've survived."

A girl broke down in tears as she looked at the boy standing at the tip of the pillar.

This scene—it felt like a messiah had descended into the mortal realm to rid the world of demons.

From his vantage point, Nox gained a clear view of the academy. It was nearly the size of a small city.

From different angles, he could still make out faint traces of demons roaming the campus.

It seemed he had barely scratched the surface. There were still thousands alive.

As he scanned the landscape, his eyes narrowed—he spotted a figure in one of the buildings.

Inside, the girl had made it halfway down the corridor when the wall beside her suddenly exploded.

CRACK!

A huge demon with tusks and a boiling red hide burst through, snarling as it raised a massive cleaver.

Her eyes widened.

She had no energy left to dodge.

SHING!

Just as the blade descended—

A spear of frost tore through the demon's skull from the side, freezing it mid-motion.

The monster shattered before it could even fall.

She stood frozen in place, stunned. Then her eyes slowly traced upward—

There, standing atop the towering pillar, was the boy.

He looked at her with a calm expression.

Tears streamed down her cheeks, and with renewed strength, she began to run forward.

At the same time, the ice pillar slowly merged back into the ground.

By now, everyone had noticed the approaching figure.

Some instinctively activated their skills, mistaking her for an enemy.

"Don't," Nox's voice echoed, stopping them just in time.

The others watched curiously.

As she got closer, several gasped.

"I thought she died!"

"Me too!"

Nyx's eyes lit up, but guilt washed over her.

Her lips trembled.

"Wendy…"

"Y-You guys were seriously planning to leave without me?!" she shouted, rushing into Nox's arms.

She hugged him tightly—so tight it felt like she never wanted to let go.

Jack whistled. "I always knew there was something between those two."

"Shut up," Nyx snapped, glaring at him. "Don't ruin the moment."

Nox hesitated, his arms hovering awkwardly beside her.

How was he supposed to tell her that, even for a split moment, he had forgotten she existed?

In the end, he sighed and embraced her.

Then Wendy's stomach growled, and she looked up at him with an embarrassed expression.

"When we're mid-air, I'll give you food," he said. "For now, just relax."

"Mmm." Wendy nodded, then blinked. "Wait… what do you mean by mid-ai—"

She wasn't able to finish her words.

Because at that moment, several giant blue portals opened across the battlefield.

From within them, Dragons emerged in their full glory, forcing both headmistress and students to flinch back in fear.
