Chapter 81: Volume 1 Chapter 81: The Lost Knight
In less than ten minutes, the swarm of beasts charging toward Garde and Surtr fell like cut wheat, wave after wave.
Despite their numbers, which could drag the battle out for a long time, they were just as delayed by Garde and Surtr as Garde was delayed by them.
The beasts had remarkable vitality.
A slash or a stab barely fazed them.
However, what they couldn't withstand was the natural disaster of the Hotlands!
The ground began to tremble as a storm gathered dozens of kilometers away.
Even at such a distance, Garde could feel the rising temperature in the air.
Some beasts began to grow restless.
While they were controlled by an ancient civilization, their instincts told them that staying any longer meant certain death.
However, only a few chose to flee.
Most of the beasts stayed behind, following orders to attack the Lizardmen's settlement.
With their limited intelligence, they saw Garde as just another Lizardman.
If someone were watching from high above the Hotlands, they would notice that the center was now covered by a colossal cyclone, stretching over a thousand kilometers in diameter and still expanding.
Within minutes, it had enveloped the center of the Hotlands and was advancing toward the middle regions, reaching the outskirts of the Lizardmen's market.
The winds, now blowing at over a thousand kilometers per hour, were twice as strong as the most powerful tornado Garde remembered from the modern world.
To make matters worse, the heat from these winds could raise blisters on any exposed skin.
The natural disaster had arrived.
Garde ceased his attack on the beasts and pulled Surtr into his arms.
"Don't struggle, we're heading back to the vehicle," he said.
With winds like these, even Surtr would be swept away, and Garde himself could easily be blown into the air if he wasn't careful.
Only the sand vehicles, each weighing more than ten tons, had enough grip to prevent them from being blown away—assuming, of course, the vehicles didn't break down in the scalding heat, now hotter than boiling water.
And it wasn't the worst of it yet.
Whether scorching or freezing, extreme temperatures are unbearable for any living creature.
Meat placed in boiling water is cooked within minutes.
Even Garde, withstanding the intense heat, felt like his skin was about to crack.
"Surtr, are you alright?" Garde asked.
"Yes," she replied.
Held in Garde's arms, her feet couldn't touch the ground, and though she looked around, she couldn't see anything.
Without Garde's protection, she would have struggled to escape the deadly winds unless she used Laevatain to its full potential.
The sand blown by the wind hit Garde's body like a hail of bullets.
Each grain, propelled by the wind, moved close to the speed of sound.
The hot sand slamming into Garde felt like a squad of soldiers behind him, firing at him with mini submachine guns.
Few in Terra could endure such punishment.
The surrounding beasts began to wail in pain.
They wanted to keep attacking Garde and Surtr, but the high temperatures and sandstorm battered them relentlessly, causing blood to splatter from their bodies.
Garde reached the sand vehicle and opened the door just enough to climb inside, but even that brief moment allowed the wind to wreak havoc within.
He slammed the door shut as the storm of sand and gravel hammered against the vehicle's bulletproof windows.
The advanced materials of Terra's technology held up under the onslaught for now.
Garde started the engine, hoping the sand vehicle would carry them back to the settlement where Serea and the others were hiding.
Crash!
A beast collided with the rear of the sand vehicle, nearly shattering the back window. Garde cursed but ignored it.
The beast was simply in its death throes, and with the external temperature rising, only a select few creatures could survive such intense heat.
The two-legged dragon Garde had previously slain might have survived, but these regular beasts couldn't, even with some of their bodies modified.
Suddenly, Garde spotted a figure on a distant sand dune.
Due to the intense sandstorm, all he could make out was a vague silhouette.
Someone moving freely in these winds!?
The next moment, the figure began to move, and as it did, Garde felt like he was watching a galloping horse.
He knew instantly—this sand vehicle couldn't outrun it!
"Surtr, you take the sand vehicle back; I'll deal with this!" Garde said.
The driver's seat of the sand vehicle was too cramped for Garde, and he didn't even have room for his tail.
Normally, he wouldn't suggest Surtr drive unless... wait, does Surtr even know how to drive?
Garde looked at her seriously. "Do you know how to drive?"
Surtr nodded. "I have memories of it."
Garde was silent for a moment before putting the vehicle into gear. "First gear!"
"When you come to a turn, steer left for a left turn and right for a right turn. If that doesn't work, just crash through. Our vehicle's tough, and the market's deserted, so if we knock down a few buildings, no one's going to make us pay for it."
As Garde stepped out of the vehicle, the figure on the sand dune was already closing in.
Garde now saw the approaching figure clearly.
It was a humanoid creature, standing nearly three meters tall.
Though calling it human wasn't quite accurate—it was a centaur.
Its upper body was human, but its lower body was that of a horse.
More than that, its eyes were mechanical and glowing red.
It was no living being but an entirely metallic construct—a mechanical centaur.
Garde noticed the creature's armor, old and worn, like an antique from a long-lost era.
The armor didn't seem to provide any benefit and was more of a burden, so the only explanation was that this ancient armor must hold great significance for the mechanical centaur.
Can machines have emotions?
Garde recognized the style of the centaur's armor.
These relics of the past were only found in museums, though Garde himself had never visited one.
But he had seen this armor—not in reality, but in dreams.
This was... the armor of the Nightzmora Knights!
