Chapter 236 I Must Speak for the 80,000 Fallen Soldiers
The smoke of Seldo Port has yet to clear, and the Hell soldiers who met with a tragic end are far from cold in their graves.
While the grave-faced General Sebes was retreating through the volcanic tunnels back to the Underworld with his defeated troops, the War Department and Logistics Department in Demon City were dragged into a battlefield of words due to a war report.
An urgent war report was slammed onto the center of the long table, the accompanying blood-red wax seal ominously hinting at significant frontline casualties—
"Battle of Seldo Port, Red Flame Legion defeated, heavy losses, with dead and wounded numbering eighty thousand."
"General Sebes failed to capture Seldo Port, and the Red Flame Legion retreated completely!"
When this report arrived in Demon City, the military community was in an uproar.
The number of Hell soldiers who died, went missing, or were wounded totaled eighty thousand!
Even worse, General Sebes's Red Flame Legion failed to hold the northern highlands of Seldo Port. After the destruction of the Magic Crystal Cannons, they retreated across the board, allowing the Empire to suddenly reverse the situation in this battle.
The War Department and Logistics Department were immediately thrust into the spotlight, and an urgent military meeting was quickly convened in Demon City.
The gloomy and dark hall was filled with sullen-faced demons seated on obsidian seats.
Though every brick here was inscribed with the word "gloom," the atmosphere in the hall bubbled like oil being boiled in fire. The sound of arguments echoed off the walls, ceaselessly reverberating.
These High-level Demons might not care about the death of eighty thousand Low-level Demons, but they certainly did not want this blame to land on their own heads.
"Eighty thousand soldiers dead or wounded!" Salman, the high-ranking war advisor of the War Department, slammed the table and roared in rage, his fiery-red pupils blazing with anger.
"How was this war fought? How did the Red Flame Legion lose? General Sebes's strategy has always been stable, so how did it suddenly lead to a crushing defeat?"
"Good question!"
Opposite him, Hakes, the vice minister of the Logistics Department, snorted coldly, his slender fingers tapping lightly on the table as he spoke in an unhurried tone: "Sebes's strategy is stable? Then I would like to ask, how did such a stable general lose eight thousand men?"
The atmosphere in the meeting room instantly froze, and sinister glances collided between the officials of the War Department and the Logistics Department, as if a new battle could erupt at any moment.
Salman squinted his eyes, speaking in a cold tone, "What do you mean? Don't hesitate to speak clearly."
A massive aura of pressure spread across the table, quickly extending to the entire clamorous venue.
Some of the Logistics Department officers couldn't help but shiver, yet some glared back defiantly, refusing to show weakness as they released their own spiritual pressure.
Seeing the meeting room on the verge of turning into a dueling ground, an observing parliamentarian coughed, speaking with authority, "Silence."
The room indeed fell silent.
In Hell, the Cabinet acts as the executor of the Demon God's power, while the Parliament beneath the Cabinet is completely controlled by the Nobles and the Clergy, essentially forming the second tier of power.
As for the vast bureaucratic departments, they answer to the Cabinet above while also being supervised by the Parliament.
On the surface, they argue for the front-line soldiers, but in reality, they only ever answer to the source of their power.
"Eighty thousand troops lost just like that; the War Department should provide an explanation," Hakes slowly spoke.
"Shouldn't this be explained by your Logistics Department? Our General Sebes wields troops like a divine master, his ability to gain absolute advantage in the early stages of war the best evidence of that!" Salman sneered, crossing his arms over his chest, glaring coldly at the Logistics officials across from him, "Conversely, your department has always been dragging our young men at the front line down, and this isn't the first or second time. General Sebes had twenty Magic Crystal Cannons and a solid high ground, and there's only one reason the Empire's army could overturn the situation—that is, there was an issue with the supplies."
"Oh?" Hakes arched an eyebrow, glancing dismissively at Salman before smiling lightly, his face full of mockery, "Do you want to shift the blame to our Logistics Department? Have you forgotten who recommended the Magic Crystal Cannons?"
Salman's face darkened, his pupils slightly contracting: "What do you mean?"
"It's simple." Hakes's lips curled up, cold light flickering in his eyes, "Of course, we in the Logistics Department acknowledge the problem lies with logistics, but this problem is not our department's oversight, rather the War Department's foolish decision-making."
The conference room instantly fell silent.
The supervising parliamentarian remained expressionless, lightly tapping their long index finger on the table.
"How can this be?" Salman sneered, "It's true that the Magic Crystal Cannons were recommended by the War Department, but your Logistics Department also stocked them!"
"Indeed, we agreed to equip the Magic Crystal Cannons." Hakes nodded slightly, his gaze sharp as a viper, "But your War Department assured us with absolute certainty that the Magic Crystal Cannons would change the course of the war, yet you failed to consider one crucial problem—"
He paused slightly, a mocking smile creeping onto his lips: "They have no mobility whatsoever."
Salman was slightly stunned, just about to retort, but Hakes cut him off.
"The loss of eighty thousand troops is not General Sebes's issue; rather, the Magic Crystal Cannons had serious problems."
Hakes's tone was slow yet sharp as he continued in an aggressive manner.
"I have thoroughly reviewed the detailed war report sent from the front line; the reason the situation reversed so suddenly despite General Sebes's overwhelming advantage was because the Imperial Gryphon Knights launched a surprise attack on the Magic Crystal Cannon positions, destroying all the artillery!"
