Chapter 91: Human Flesh Mask
Realm Between, the misty graveyard.
With his back against one of the tombstones, Kael sat silently and ate some hard bread that he stole from the school's kitchen before his escape.
Despite him being faceless, when he tried opening his mouth, a small gap opened, stretching his flesh in a creepy manner, and Kael stuffed the bread into the opening.
He expected to need to wait in the Realm Between for a little while before he could safely return back to Whitesky.
With the help of Peeking Mirror, he'd been able to see the current situation in the Dark Jewel's Corner.
It was rather safe, but if he went there right now, he would most likely have to deal with the Guild, and he'd rather not.
And thus, since he still had some food left that he took from the kitchen, he decided to wait until things calmed down there.

In that moment, as the wind brought the mist deeper into the graveyard, Kael heard some strange sounds.
When he turned around, he saw something rise from one of the graves—it was a skeleton wearing a human face as a mask.
The human face was just a thin layer of flesh and blood, which looked incredibly creepy.
In that moment, as the skeleton rose from the grave, it turned to look at Kael, and the human face mask started to look just like him—the faceless version.
"What in the… world?"
Kael stood up in shock, and it felt creepy, as he never realized just how creepy it was to look at faceless person.
'Cursed Artifact? It must be!'
Kael cocked his head, wondering how this skeleton could suddenly move and why now, but then he turned his gaze to the sky.
The crimson moon had turned silver—it was the night of the undead—and it was a rare night in the Realm Between.
"…Interesting."
Kael quickly drew the black revolver, fired three bullets at the skeleton's chest immediately, and it collapsed to the ground, disintegrating into dust.
Only the flesh mask remained.
With hesitant steps, Kael approached the thin layer of flesh, picked it up with a disgusted look, and it felt rather rubbery.
It was definitely made from human flesh, but it was strangely durable because of the rubberiness of it.
"…I lost the marionette, sadly, but it looks like I received another Cursed Artifact in return. It let the skeleton take my appearance… Is it an appearance-changing artifact?"
Kael rubbed his chin, and he carefully wrapped the flesh mask in a shirt of his and stuffed it inside his bag.
'…I wonder if there is Cursed Artifact Encyclopedia of sorts. It feels like everyone is more knowledgeable about these Cursed Artifacts than I am.'
He thought, and at that moment, with his back turned on the stone gateway, it suddenly activated, and someone stepped through.
"Ah? Lord, you're here?"
With a chirpy-sounding voice, Melia said with a bright smile behind the doll mask.
"Doll…? What are you doing here?"
Kael asked in surprise.
"Must be the same reason why you're here. The news finally reached my place about the Dark Jewel's Corner."
Melia said.
After taking a second to register her words, Kael also nodded with a heavy sigh and said.
"Horrible thing, right?"
"Yeah… I've come to look at the Peeking Mirror at the current situation over in Dark Jewel's Corner. You must've just arrived since you're still over in the graveyard. Want to look at it with me?"
"Sure."
Kael said, and with Melia, walked to the ruined town, and shortly afterwards, arrived at the mirror stone table.
Melia touched the mirror—imagining Dark Jewel's Corner—and then the horrible scene of the scorched town appeared before them.
"How horrible… It's definitely the handiwork of the Rav'akari. Why in the world would one of the Ten Fingers want to destroy a town of innocent people?
"They rarely do anything without a reason… It seems like a pointless act of cruelty."
Melia said with a sad-sounding voice as she saw burned corpses of the children on the streets.
"Have you ever been there?"
Kael asked.
"…Yes, and no. I have never stepped into the streets of that town, but I've taken a train that went through the Dark Jewel's Corner."
Melia said.
"I've been there. May I?"
He said, asking for his turn in the mirror, and Melia nodded with a smile before stepping aside to give him the reins.
With a tap on the mirror, he moved the mirror's view over to other streets, and it was the same scene of destruction everywhere.
In that moment, as he tried moving the mirror over the town square, the corners of the mirror started to crack!
"Wait! There are Divine Rankers in there!"
Melia quickly pushed Kael aside, even though she didn't mean to, and quickly made the Dark Jewel's Corner disappear from the mirror.
"I am sorry, sir!"
After realizing what she did, she kowtowed before Kael and begged for forgiveness for touching his holy, godly self.
"It's fine. What was that, though? Why did the mirror start suddenly to crack?"
Kael asked, as he didn't mind the slight push to the side, but he was quite curious as to why the mirror started to crack.
"…Thank you, my lord."
Melia stood back up, put her hand against her chest, and bowed once more before saying.
"The presence of the Divine Rankers is too much for the Peeking Mirror to handle at times. If you've directly looked over to one of the Divine Rankers, they would've sensed that you're watching them and might've attacked back.
"If they had attacked, the Peeking Mirror would've gotten destroyed. There is no need to risk it."
Melia said.
'…Interesting. I know that she is level 6, and that is the peak of High Rankers, so she is very close to Divine Ranker.
'However, it looks like Divine Rankers are much greater beings than High Rankers.'
Kael thought and then asked.
"Can you tell me more about Divine Rankers?"
"It's unclear how many Divine Rankers there are, as some are hiding, but there are only twelve Divine Rankers who are Earthlings.
"They take the twelve seats of the Guild and are part of the Human Council, which is responsible for making important decisions on behalf of the Guild.
"They're the main weapons against the Ten Fingers and humanity's greatest warriors."
Melia said.
"…You said that it is unclear how many Divine Rankers there are? There are Whitesky citizens who have become Divine Rankers too?"
Kael asked.
"Yep, but no one knows just how many there are out there, as some of them don't honestly care about fighting Rav'akari.
"They have their own agendas, desires, and goals unrelated to the war between humans and Rav'akari."
