Chapter 12: Interview and Ranking
When I arrived at the cafeteria, I quickly found an empty table and started eating. After finishing, I realized I had plenty of time before my interview, so I went to find my dorm room and practiced my forms. Once I was done, I took a quick shower and headed to the interview.
When I arrived, it was already my turn. I entered the room, and the worker began asking questions about my Nightmare after taking my name.
"I'd say it was hard… but I managed," I told her.
"I see, how many Nightmare creature did you kill and of what rank ?"
"None. But I did kill the strongest human around."
She was a little baffled when I said that, but quickly recovered.
"Would you share what appraisal did you get ?"
"Glorious."
She was stunned again, this time it took a little longer to start again.
"Would you be willing to share your aspect and its rank ?"
"I can tell you it's heavily combat-focused, and I have an attribute that makes me a very capable fighter."
"I see, have you recieved a true name?" she asked, sounding disinterested—most likely just a routine question.
"Yes" I replied.
She looked shocked, and when the lie detector confirmed I was telling the truth, she quickly followed up.
"What is it?"
"King of Men."
She was clearly flustered but continued with the routine questions.
She also asked about my blindfold, but I simply shrugged it off, saying I didn't want to talk about it.
After the interview, I headed back to the cafeteria. Along the way, I noticed that I was likely the last to be interviewed, as no one else was waiting outside. In the cafeteria, I sat at the same table I had during lunch. This time, however, there were two other people there—both of whom I knew: Sunny and Cassie.
During dinner, the rankings were finally revealed. A large screen in the cafeteria displayed the results.
The room fell silent as everyone saw the top of the list. Only hushed murmurs could be heard, whispering about how there were monsters among us.
I turned toward Sunny and asked, "Could you tell me what the rankings are?"
"Yeah, sure," he replied. "Cassie and I are at the bottom. At the top, there's that girl we met at the gate—Nephis. She has a True Name: Changing Star. Believe it or not, she's only second. First place belongs to a guy named Christopher… and he also has a True Name: King of Men."
'And here I thought I was special for having a True Name… Wait… isn't this guy's name Christopher?' Sunny thought.
"Oh, they think highly of me then." I said, amused.
I could tell that both Sunny and Cassie were dumbfounded, but before they could say anything, Nephis approached. I could feel she was looking at me and said,
"You. Me. Fight."
"No, thanks," I replied. "It's late, and more importantly, I don't usually beat those weaker than me." My tone was amused.
Now, everyone was staring at us, jaws practically on the floor. Before anyone could say a word, I stood up and began walking away.
"If you'll excuse me—good night."
'Ahhh, what a long day...' I thought as I lay in my bed, finally ready for a full night's sleep—something I hadn't had in years.
