Chapter 128: Secret of the Warbine I
"And how does the High Chief go about protecting his only child? By gathering the most talented warriors to protect him? By crafting the best treasures to give him safety?"
Vacuse's eyes glinted. "I'll tell you today!"
Ragna's face completely fell and his eyes flew so wide that they almost popped. And then he did something so uncharacteristic that it left everyone shocked.
Ragna lifted his hand and used bloodline power!
Red light glinted and formed into a spear that shot forward with blinding speed at Vacuse!
Captain Mera shoved him to the side as she stood in his place, flanked by Harkon. They watched the spear with grim acceptance.
But the next instant, the spear was wiped out of existence by a rumbling will.
It was the First General, his face expressionless. "Lord Ragna... do not forget that this is my hall!"
His voice rumbled through the hall, shaking everything like a thunder strike.
Ragna turned to his uncle, his face a mask of shock. "What... Uncle?"
The First General didn't show any expression. He didn't even turn as he said, "Let the human finish."
Ragna stared at his uncle for a while and then his face settled. "Very well, First General."
Everyone watched and noticed the interaction. The atmosphere in the room quickly rose into such seriousness that their hands inched closer to their weapons.
Vacuse didn't react. He just continued his story. "And so, the High Chief was the only one present on the day of his son's birth! After his son was born, he switched him with another child that was born that day! After which he killed both mothers!
"Then he found the most loyal of the loyal of his men to raise his real son outside, only bringing him in later as the captain of the Bone Riders. Captain Valka!"
Vacuse turned to where the Captain had turned to stone and he bowed. "I hail you, Lord Valka Warbine, heir to the High Clan and the legacy of the Great Unifier!"
Silence.
Deep, deep silence.
What Vacuse said just left everyone in deep shock, both in its absurdity and its ridiculousness.
The humans in the diplomatic group turned to Vacuse and they couldn't believe their ears. They knew their lord was the kind that liked to do different things... but wasn't this over the top?
Lyra looked at Vacuse as if he had absolutely lost his mind.
And up above, the First General watched without blinking or doing anything. The Elders were just looking at each other in shock, waiting for someone to laugh the joke away.
Captain Valka hadn't moved a muscle and Ragna was the same. They were all staring at Vacuse.
Vacuse sighed, and his voice was the only one in the hall. "When Ragna found out, he poisoned the High Chief and made it so..."
"Enough!"
It was the same Elder that wanted to kill Vacuse earlier, the father to Yoh. His whole body was covered in red light that rippled around him as he walked forward. Anger clung to him and he shouted again. "Enough!
"You go on and on about this! This is clear disrespect against the Warbine and the Elders! Since when have things fallen so badly that we, the Elders, could be summoned by a mere heir and the tool of war, First General?
"And now you invite this human here to talk down on our High Chief! I say enough! Kill the humans, put the heir on house arrest, and you, First General, explain yourself!"
Eh?
Everyone was shocked. Even Vacuse blinked.
What was this Elder talking about? Were they rebelling against the joint power of the First General and Ragna? It seemed they wanted to use Vacuse as an excuse to take their power back.
The Elders all stood to join their fellow, all of them staring at the First General.
Vacuse felt that things were changing fast from what he initially planned. The narration was changing from what Vacuse spoke about to the Elders suddenly rebelling.
With just a few words, that Elder had changed the mood of the room and turned everyone's attention around! It was as if what Vacuse said was nothing but nonsense!
Vacuse felt a chill. '... is this your handiwork, Ragna?...'
He didn't get the answer he wanted because Ragna stood and turned towards the door as if he wanted to obey the Elders.
At the same time, warriors were quickly approaching the humans.
Vacuse felt a chill of danger run down his spine then. '... Kagerou... where are you!..'
Just then, a cracking laughter boomed through the hall that immediately made everyone freeze. The First General reacted as he stood up, his hard mask breaking to show his shock.
The door to the inner chamber suddenly exploded and an old Orc came out.
The Orc was tall and thin with a gaunt, pale face, as if he had been sick for a long time. But as he walked forward, it was apparent that there was still strength in his body, especially considering that he was dragging a dead human by its neck.
Vacuse's eyes narrowed. It wasn't Kagerou.
The Orc threw the dead human on the ground and turned to face the First General, ignoring everyone else. "Brother."
It was as if the single word rocked everyone to the core and snapped them out of their daze. They all fell to their knees, every single one of them.
The Elders as well.
Only the First General and Ragna remained standing with the humans.
But after blinking, the First General went to his knees as well and bowed his head. "High Chief!"
"High Chief!"
"High Chief!"
"Warbines!"
"Great Warbines!"
The room seemed to shudder as the High Chief strode forward directly towards Valka. He gazed down. "My son!"
The room reeled again as everyone shuddered. The humans looked at Vacuse.
Lyra's face turned ashen and she trembled.
Even the First General couldn't hide his shock.
Only Vacuse and Ragna remained calm. Their eyes met as they looked at each other.
Vacuse raised his brows. '... well? What else do you have to play?..'
