The Untouchable of Magic High School – A New God Enters the Game

Chapter 30: Chapter 29: Shadows of Motive and Blade

"If you don't want to get hurt, back off."

"Wha—? Was that… magic?" Eimi's voice trembles.

"That startled me…" Shizuku murmurs.

"That was Yugen's voice, wasn't it?" Honoka confirms.

On the school rooftop, clad in club uniforms, Eimi, Shizuku, and Honoka can't hide their shock at the voice that just rang out. It was unmistakably Yugen's, laced with magic.

"But… we didn't see him," Eimi says, scanning the air.

"He can use photonic vibration magic, right? Maybe that's it?" Shizuku suggests.

"Or stealth magic," Honoka adds. "We can't exactly interrogate a Ten Master Clans member."

The trio is here to identify someone targeting Tatsuya. If Miyuki caught wind of this, the school might end up littered with ice sculptures. Telling Yugen risked the news reaching her anyway. So, they've been watching Tatsuya through binoculars, suspecting the kendo club captain as the culprit. That's when Yugen's voice, sharp as a temple bell, jolted them.

"What now?" Shizuku asks, recognizing the warning.

Yugen, a member of the Ten Master Clans' Mitsuya family, isn't subtle. His warning carries weight, but Honoka's loyalty to her friend drives her forward.

"Yugen's too much for us alone," Honoka says, resolute. "So we'll track down this attacker ourselves!"

"You're really fired up," Shizuku observes, silently apologizing to Yugen. (Sorry, Yugen. I can't stop her now.)

Eimi, usually the bold one, steps back, while Shizuku resolves to keep Honoka safe. Their determination stems from a desire to act before Miyuki turns the school into an icy gallery.

In the first gymnasium, Yugen returns after handling a disturbance. He spots Miyuki at a workstation, engrossed in a tablet, lost in thought. The sound of the closing door snaps her out of it.

"Oh, w-welcome back, Yugen-san," she stammers.

"Hey, I'm back," Yugen replies. "That from the club federation?"

"Yes… want to see it?" Miyuki offers.

"Sure, let's take a look."

Curious about what's troubled her, Yugen scans the club federation's report. It details a recent clash between the swordsmanship and kendo clubs. According to Takeaki Kirihara, a second-year swordsmanship club member, his actions toward Sayaka Mibu, a second-year kendo club member, stemmed from emotional outbursts. The transcript, converted from his testimony, lays it bare.

Miyuki, aware of Yugen's martial prowess, seeks his perspective. "Yugen-san, what do you make of Kirihara-senpai's testimony?"

"I get where he's coming from," Yugen says. "What I study isn't a 'path' to refine skills for self-improvement—it's a 'technique' for killing when necessary. From what I've gathered, Kirihara only used magic against Mibu during that incident. He seems to understand the difference between swordsmanship and kendo."

Broadly speaking, a 'path' is a purpose, while a 'technique' is a means. Kendo is a sport, bound by strict rules to hone technique. Swordsmanship, even in competition, focuses on cutting down an opponent before they strike—essentially, the art of killing.

"Kirihara's testimony suggests Mibu faced some trouble at school," Yugen continues. "It changed her kendo, making it more combat-oriented. He believes the cause lies within the kendo club… makes sense."

Kirihara's guess hits close to the mark, a testament to how closely he's observed Sayaka's swordplay. Yugen hasn't told Miyuki about the attack he endured, and Tatsuya likely hasn't either. Involving her too deeply is risky, but Yugen decides to consult Tatsuya later.

"Since Juumonji-senpai accepted a light punishment, he must believe Kirihara's remorse is genuine," Yugen muses. "(The problem is 'those guys' sticking their noses in. Hiding too much will only piss off Gramps.)"

As the last line of defense, Yugen feels the weight of his role as a Mitsuya.

During freshman recruitment week, one change stands out: the school's whistleblower system. Designed for anonymous reports when first-course students bully second-course students, it protects against retaliation. The previous disciplinary committee chair, Mika, relied on personal connections with second-course students, rendering the system largely unused.

Now, a rare report catches Mari's attention: "Sexual harassment during recruitment?" It's an anonymous tip about a deliberate magical attack on Tatsuya.

The night before, Tatsuya mentioned Shizuku and Honoka—Miyuki's female classmates—to her surprise. When asked about them, Miyuki answered, and Yugen, listening, instantly knew it was the rooftop trio but kept silent. Tatsuya, half-joking, teased, "Miyuki, don't you want Yugen's picture more than mine?" Yugen choked on his coffee, and Miyuki, flustered, waved her hands frantically. "N-no, that's too much!" Am I some deity to you, Miyuki?

For the record, Yugen magically cleaned the spilled coffee without a trace.

Recruitment week ends, and school life shifts back to academics. Tatsuya, swamped as a disciplinary committee member, now handles routine paired patrols with Mari, Tatsumi, or Sawaki—thankfully not Morisaki, for which he's quietly grateful.

As he prepares to leave after school, Leo calls out. "Tatsuya, committee again? Recruitment's over, right?"

"Nah, I'm off today. Should be chill," Tatsuya replies.

"You're a legend now," Leo grins. "The 'mysterious first-year who crushed magic club regulars without magic.'"

"Mysterious? I'm not hiding anything," Tatsuya scoffs.

The rumors have reached him. Some even call him a spy for an anti-magic group. After the recent attack, aligning with such a group is the last thing on his mind. Bad joke, guys. "My rumors are tame compared to others," he mutters.

"Oh, you mean Yugen?" Leo laughs. "The 'Magician' who charmed two biathlon club OGs, soothed hunting club seniors, and silenced every trouble he faced."

Gossip spreads fast in this tight-knit school. Upperclassmen know Yugen as the younger brother of the previous and prior disciplinary committee chairs, a fact underscoring the weight of being a "Numbered" Ten Master Clans member. But there's another rumor.

"What's your take on the other one, big brother?" Leo asks.

"If it was some random guy, I'd be skeptical. But Yugen? I trust him," Tatsuya says.

Leo blinks. "That's… surprisingly fair for a siscon like you."

"I'm Miyuki's brother, not her babysitter," Tatsuya retorts.

The other rumor: Yugen and Miyuki are dating. Both in Class 1-A, student council members, and representatives for the freshman class, they're a striking pair, visibly close. Tatsuya finds the rumor plausible but feels a romantic relationship is "distant" rather than premature. He knows Miyuki's feelings but not Yugen's, leaving him unable to judge fully.

The classroom grows noisy. Tatsuya spots Miyuki peeking through the entrance, alone—unusual, as Yugen's typically nearby.

In the disciplinary committee room, Mari, the chair, and Yugen, summoned despite being a student council member, sit together. Both are off-duty, their tasks done. The door opens, and Mayumi and Katsuto enter.

"Sorry to keep you waiting," Mayumi says.

"Pardon the intrusion," Katsuto adds.

A first-year among third-years is unusual, signaling Yugen's presence as a Mitsuya. As they sit, Mayumi begins.

"We're here about Kirihara's magical attack on Mibu. Yugen, have you read the report?"

"Yes, after Miyuki," Yugen confirms.

Mari, having reviewed it via Mayumi's transfer, nods. All present are briefed. Mayumi turns to Katsuto. "Juumonji-kun, anything stand out about Kirihara?"

"I've heard nothing beyond his testimony," Katsuto says. "He's responsible with his power. I don't think he's lying."

"Mibu's sword changed, huh…" Mari muses.

If Kirihara acted purely on impulse, this wouldn't have escalated. His frustration stemmed from the shift in Mibu's swordplay, tied to an incident in her first year. Yugen raises a hand. "Mind if I check the committee's terminal?"

"Go ahead," Mari says, puzzled.

Yugen searches last year's records for kendo or swordsmanship club incidents. The others peer over, stunned by the scrolling data. The committee logs all incidents, big or small, to guide future members by cataloging responses to varied magic types.

Yugen pauses at a case from last year's recruitment week involving the swordsmanship club, handled by Mari. "Mari, this one?"

"I remember," she says. "Some swordsmanship club hotheads got out of line. I put them in their place. But does this tie to Kirihara?"

"More to Mibu," Yugen replies. "I visited her kendo dojo once, just before she enrolled. New Shadow Style occasionally trains with other schools. I was there as Mototsume's aide, not sparring, so I never crossed blades with her. But her swordplay was pure kendo—textbook."

His past life offered no martial skill, but survival-driven training sharpened his eye for technique. "If I'd seen her sword now, I'd have noticed the change. Tatsuya was there during that incident, but he's no expert. Kirihara's guess, sadly, is spot-on."

"What!?" Katsuto exclaims.

"How so!?" Mayumi demands.

Mari leans in, shocked.

Yugen's words affirm Kirihara's claim: someone in the kendo club warped Mibu's swordplay. "During recruitment week, I was attacked multiple times. The attacker's movements screamed kendo. That alone? Fine. But they wore a tricolor wristband—Blanche's lower faction, Egalité. The Yokohama incident in March was also Blanche-related. Saegusa-senpai, Juumonji-senpai, were your families aware?"

The trio is speechless, facing not just a student but Mitsuya Yugen. His bold move tests the Saegusa and Juumonji families' reactions. After a pause, Mayumi ventures, "Were you at Yokohama Bay Hills East Tower during that incident?"

"Yeah," Yugen admits. "I didn't solve it—just did the job I was hired for. I never met the one who resolved it; my father filled me in later."

That day was Miyuki's birthday. Yugen was summoned to the Japan Magic Association's Kanto Branch at Yokohama Bay Hills West Tower, an hour before Tatsuya's call. His client: Mayo Yotsuba, head of the Yotsuba family, with her chief butler, Hayama. They tasked him with erasing evidence of an attack that day.

His role in the Okinawa Defense Battle, using "invisible strategic-class magic," was known through Mototsume, prompting the job. Information suppression was simple with his magic, and improvisation was an option if needed. Catching the culprit wasn't his task, making it straightforward. As an outsider privy to Tatsuya's secrets, this was his price.

The reward, though, was staggering—worthy of its own story.

"Who was the client?" Katsuto presses.

"Can't say," Yugen replies. "Client's orders. It came through the Magic Association via my father, who only approved my involvement. He doesn't know the details, so don't bother asking him."

His tone shifts, firm and unwavering, a warning to the Saegusa and Juumonji families. "The Mitsuya family has already identified Blanche's local contacts. If anyone's sacrificed to cover this up, we'll leak everything to the Uesugi family. That's my decision, and Mototsume's."
