Chapter 29: Chapter 28: Pseudo Cast Jamming
At the café, Tatsuya treated the group. Yugen recalled the day's events and questioned Tatsuya.
"Tatsuya, did you use Pseudo Cast Jamming to stop Kirihara-senpai?"
"…How'd you know?" Tatsuya's expression turned serious.
"After handling another issue, I saw Hunting Club seniors with psion intoxication. A classmate mentioned feeling noise from the second gym—same time as the sword and kendo club trouble. Only explanation is you countered Kirihara's High-Frequency Blade."
Tatsuya listened as Yugen summarized the incident. Miyuki recalled her call to Yugen.
"Yugen-san, were you with Shizuku and Honoka then…?"
"Helping with that issue. I know it because I accidentally found the same method. Probably like yours, Tatsuya."
The method correlated with psion reserves. With Tatsuya's capacity, he could easily induce psion intoxication in sensitive individuals. The second gym's non-magic club demo, mostly Class 2 students, limited collateral damage. Yugen continued discreetly.
"Didn't tell Saegusa-kaichou, only Ichihara-senpai. The seniors are fine now."
"Sorry, Yugen," Tatsuya said.
"No big deal. Coincidence. Miyuki might've noticed anyway," Yugen replied.
"She's sharp," Tatsuya agreed.
"What do you two take me for?" Miyuki pouted, blushing.
Yugen brushed off Tatsuya's apology, suggesting Miyuki's perceptiveness. Her flustered reaction drew a nervous laugh from Toya.
"She's just embarrassed… but you said Cast Jamming?" Toya asked.
"It needs a special stone, right? Anti…" Mizuki started.
"Antinite, Erika-chan. Super expensive," Miyuki clarified.
Antinite, a rare military resource from ancient ruins, was pricier than gems, tightly controlled. Yugen and Tatsuya denied possessing it.
"No way I'd have it. It's military-grade," Yugen said.
"None at my place either," Erika added.
"But…" Mizuki pressed.
Tatsuya glanced at Yugen, who nodded, activating a soundproof spell. Tatsuya whispered, "Off the record, I didn't use Cast Jamming. It's specific magic interference based on its theory."
"Such a spell exists?" Mizuki asked.
"Maybe CAD psion interference?" Toya ventured.
"Correct," Tatsuya confirmed.
Yugen explained to Leo, "When multiple CADs activate simultaneously, psion waves interfere, often canceling magic or weakening it. You've experienced that, right?"
"Yeah, I get it," Leo said.
"As if you could pull off such a high-level trick," Erika teased.
"What!?" Leo snapped.
"Calm down," Mizuki mediated.
"Stop fighting," Toya sighed.
Ignoring Leo and Erika's banter, Yugen continued. "Tatsuya deployed a startup sequence to disrupt High-Frequency Blade, then another for an opposing effect, amplifying both as non-systematic magic to interfere, neutralizing Kirihara easily."
"Impressive, Yugen. Want to be my translator?" Tatsuya joked.
"I'm not your interpreter. I just stumbled on the same principle. But two high-spec CADs at the Disciplinary Committee? Found them during cleanup?" Yugen asked.
"Old but expert-grade, heavily customized," Tatsuya said.
"Probably Mika-neesan's from her Disciplinary Committee days. She gifted one when she became president. Only she could handle such a finicky CAD," Yugen said.
Its extreme tuning demanded vast psion reserves, explaining the seniors' intoxication. Tatsuya nodded.
"Makes sense."
"Two people in our year finding this? You and Tatsuya are unreal," Toya said.
"What's the big deal?" Leo asked.
"Two reasons it's off-record," Tatsuya said. "One, the tech's incomplete. Two, disrupting magic without Antinite could shake mage society."
Antinite's scarcity made it a minor threat, but Tatsuya's method, if refined, could destabilize the magical world.
"I can't publicize it until countermeasures exist," Tatsuya said.
"That's forward-thinking," Mizuki said.
"You overthink, Onii-sama. Not everyone can read active startup sequences," Miyuki teased.
"Guess I'm just indecisive," Tatsuya chuckled.
"What about you, Yugen?" Toya asked.
Yugen dropped a bombshell. "Sorry, Tatsuya, but I completed it. With countermeasures. Too dangerous to reveal."
"You finished specific magic interference?" Tatsuya asked, stunned.
"Yeah. You and Miyuki saw it—against 'that person.'"
Tatsuya and Miyuki froze. Yugen had perfected interference magic, unlike Tatsuya's prototype. Erika, Mizuki, Leo, and Toya were floored—beyond high school level.
"Super off-record," Yugen said. "After Tatsuya joined the Disciplinary Committee, I beat Juumonji-senpai in a formal match using a spell—Cast Silent—that forcibly terminates startup sequences, magic sequences, and active spells for one system, triggering an opposing effect."
"Never heard of it," Erika said.
"That's why it's off-record. My Round Table Sword, a multi-system Cast Silent, amplifies interference to destroy sequences, a superior Gram Demolition—call it Gram Vanish."
Magic sequences normally resist interference via auto-generated security. Cast Silent acts as a master key, bypassing it. Only Yugen and Kana, with her Elemental Sight, could use it, agreeing to keep it secret.
The group fell silent. Such a spell could upend mage society. Yugen ensured it required personalized startup sequences; without them, overuse could kill the caster.
"Gram Dispersion needs my Heavenly Eye, but I've trained it out of silver-eye mode," Yugen added.
"Encryption and personalization prevent misuse, but you're all stunned," Yugen said.
"Your incomplete version shocked me. You could be the next Cardinal George," Tatsuya said.
"No thanks. I'd rather not destabilize society. You can carry the magic-nullification banner," Yugen replied, sipping coffee.
Miyuki leaned into Yugen, radiating affection. "You're as worthy of respect as Onii-sama."
"I can't win against you, Miyuki," Yugen sighed.
"Total couple vibes!" Leo blurted.
"Really?" Yugen and Miyuki said in unison.
Erika, Toya, and Leo faceplanted; Mizuki froze, blushing. Tatsuya intervened.
"Enough joking. Someone's taking it seriously," he said, eyeing Mizuki.
"W-what!?" Mizuki stammered.
The shocking revelation was smoothed over.
Recruitment week hit its midpoint, but trouble grew, almost deliberately. Tatsuya faced Class 2 seniors' interference during patrols, subduing both sides when they ignored warnings. Disciplinary Committee rules, set by Mika and reinforced by Kana via an emergency assembly, allowed forceful suppression with council oversight.
Yugen faced similar hostility, nullifying attacks with Gram Demolition. The attacker, in a tracksuit, moved like a kendo practitioner, wearing an Egalité wristband—a Class 2 kendo captain, Tsukasa Kinoe, 3-F.
(Kendo-trained… Egalité. Original story knowledge helps, but I'm an irregularity.)
The next day, Yugen passed Kinoe, who fled from Tatsuya. Yugen's martial arts habits masked his presence, unnoticed by Kinoe's acceleration spell.
"Thought it was Shishou," Tatsuya said, relieved.
"These deliberate attacks are getting old. Your foes are unrepentant toddlers. But you hit a tough one," Yugen said.
"You noticed?" Tatsuya asked.
"Same guy targeted me. You, I get—testing your Pseudo Cast Jamming. Me? No clue. Maybe they want me as leverage against you."
They headed to the first gym for another brawl, per Mayumi's call. Yugen glanced at the rooftop, muttered, and followed Tatsuya.
