Chapter 473: Bruise
(From Blue's Perspective)
After Dem left, I started to work on the device more to keep myself busy. I kept my work to thirty minutes each day only, but I spent more than half the day over a table full of scribbles on countless papers, clumsy drawings, and countless books.
People around me got anxious about my health and felt that I was pushing myself too far. Ruby kept on telling me not to act that way and take some rest. But the rest was the last thing on my mind. I developed a weird sense and that sense would not let me rest.
In only fifteen days, I made a device. I had a feeling it would work. And to see that, I needed to make another one. Since I could make one, it would not be hard for me to make a duplicate.
"Your Highness, it is time to have supper," Perita said.
"I will have it later," I said, waving my hand to dismiss her.
"No, Your Highness, you have been here for the last four hours. You are to work only thirty minutes," she said. Why was she being so stubborn? Could she not see I was in the middle of something very important?
"I have work left. This much won't hurt," I said, not taking my eyes off my work. I could create matters out of nowhere, which was just one of the amazing things mages could do. It was just really fascinating. I could do it all day.
Perita said some things after that. But I did not pay any heed to that. I had more important matters to tend to.
Then, all of a sudden, someone grabbed a hold of my arm and pulled me away effortlessly. I tried to shove the hand off, but the person was too strong.
"Perita!" I yelled.
It was not Perita. It was Evan.
"Are you crazy? What are you doing?" I yelled again. "What do you think you are doing? I am working!"
"Do you know what time is it?" he asked. His eyes were scary and his lips were twitching in anger.
"I know! I just need to…"
"Do you even know what the fuck is your situation now?"
I flinched. I had never seen him act this way.
He picked up a shard of mirror from the table. He held it in front of me and I saw my nose was bleeding.
I got uncomfortable and quickly wiped the blood with the sleeve of my gown. He started pulling me by my arm and I did not stop him. I was going crazy. I noticed how greedy I was getting to create something new, to use my power. But why?
Even a few months ago, I did not feel the need to have my power and if it was not a must to have a kid and to defeat my father, I would never wish to have my power awakened.
He took me to Ruby's room. "Well, look at our little friend. You might want to tell her a few things or two," he said while Ruby stood, not knowing what happened, but it took her only a few seconds to understand what happened without being told. Evan left abruptly, slamming the door behind him. He came back after a few minutes to apologize, then left again.
Well, what a gentleman he was! But I was truly surprised to see him that much angry today.
"What are you doing, Your Highness? What happened?" Ruby asked gently. "I have been telling you for the past few days not to push yourself. You said so yourself that if you work too hard, it will not be okay for your baby and yourself. Then, why?"
"… I don't know… I don't know why, or what happened. All I know is that I… I felt greed, the need to finish my work. And I am still feeling it," I mumbled.
"Your Highness, you are not being chased by some kind of expectation. You are free to do whatever you want to. Even if you do nothing, no one will question you," she said slowly as if she was talking to a child. It made me angry, but I said nothing. I knew she was right and I was just being a brat. How could I be so careless as to work hard and neglect the safety of my child?
I needed to be smacked.
"Your Highness, I am not trying to scold you. It's just… I am very worried, and so is everyone else. You need to be safe," she said. "Your Highness, you are our friend, and family. Please, just do not act like this again. Working is fine, but not too much."
That night, I ate in my room and cried myself to sleep. I was being careless. I cried because I felt guilty.
Dem scolded me a lot in the letters, and so did Luc. But then again, both of them sent me letters of comfort. Dem sent me two letters the very next day. He got the words of the incident quicker than I thought.
Evan did not come to the breakfast table the next day. I wanted to talk to him, but he did not show up during lunch either. I got very confused and went to meet him myself.
I was worried he got sick again, even though the maids said he was just tired; that was the excuse he made.
I knocked on the door, with Perita and Calix behind me. Perita said yesterday, Evan went to see what I was doing and saw my nose bleeding. That was when he pulled me by my arm and got very angry. She was shocked to see him that way as well. My nose had started bleeding at that exact moment as the blood was very fresh when I saw it in the mirror.
"Evan, it's me," I said.
He opened the door after a while. He looked… better, for a sick person. His golden hair was messy. It looked like he barely got out of bed. He did look tired, but not sick.
"Uh…"
I suddenly was at a loss for words. I practiced beforehand as to what I was going to tell him, but at the moment, it got very awkward.
"Would you like to come in?" he asked. Stay connected via empire
"Ah, yes…"
I told Calix and Perita to stand at the door while I went in with him. He motioned for me to sit down on the couch.
I sat down and looked around the room. It smelled quite different. Well, every person smelled different. I especially liked the smell of the shower after Dem came out.
"I'm sorry," he said, running his hand through his already messy hair as he sat down in front of me. "That was very rude of me."
My hand instinctively went up to touch my arm where he held yesterday. It left a bad bruise.
His eyes followed my hand and I watched him turn pale at the sight of the bruise. He muttered something under his breath, then opened his mouth to say something, but closed it again.
"I… That was… Really, what was I thinking? I can't believe I acted that way with a Queen," he said. His voice showed clear regret and he sounded apologetic. "I'm really sorry. I do not know how to express how sorry I am. That… I literally left a bruise.
Does it hurt so much?"
"No," I shook my head. "It doesn't hurt unless I touch it."
"Did you show it to Doctor Dimitri? What did he say? It looks swollen too. I did not break your arm, did I?"
"I don't think it is necessary…"
"No! Show it to him! I fear I might have broken your arm, or at least, fractured it," he said earnestly.
I had never seen him, or anyone other than Dem sound so earnest about something regarding me.
