Chapter 20: Chapter 20 Hinata And Neji
In the dining room of the clan head's residence, the family of four, Hiashi, Keiko, Hinata, and Hanabi, were enjoying breakfast together.
While taking care of Hanabi, Keiko glanced at her eldest daughter with a look of surprise, as if seeing her for the first time.
Even Hiashi, who was sitting upright and eating his breakfast with strict formality, was visibly stunned. His chopsticks paused mid-air, forgotten in his hand.
Hinata had already eaten three servings of breakfast and was now finishing her fourth. Neither Hiashi nor Keiko could fathom how her small, flat stomach could hold so much food.
Hiashi and Keiko both had a guilty look in their eyes, 'How had we not noticed our daughter's appetite all these years?'
"Father, I'm finished."
Hinata put down the porcelain bowl in her hand with a blushing face. Her soft voice snapped Hiashi out of his daze. He nodded slightly and set down his own chopsticks, his expression turning serious as he looked at Hinata.
"F-Father..."
Looking at her father's sudden serious look, she thought he might be upset about how much she had eaten and lowered her head nervously. However, she didn't immediately apologize as she would have in the past.
Hiashi felt a flicker of pride at this small change. He exchanged a glance with Keiko before speaking in a gentle, apologetic tone: "Hinata, we're sorry for not noticing earlier."
"Huh?" Hinata was still confused.
"Hinata, the so-called Chakra is generally the product of the balanced mixture of Spiritual Energy and Physical Energy." Hiashi explained patiently. Seeing his tiny daughter listening intently, his expression softened slightly.
"However, the combination of Spiritual Energy and Physical Energy first produces stamina, which is the foundation of Taijutsu. Stamina can then be converted into Chakra within the body. Once a Ninja extracts Chakra, they can use Ninjutsu."
Seeing that Hinata still looked somewhat puzzled, Hiashi continued.
"The Hyuga Clan's Gentle Fist is a Taijutsu that combines Chakra and our Kekkei Genkai. Using taijutsu consumes stamina, and replenishing stamina requires Physical Energy. Eating is the best way to replenish Physical Energy."
Hinata finally understood what her father was trying to say, but she still blushed and lowered her head, steam practically rising from her face.
Hiashi felt a mix of exasperation and affection at his daughter's shyness. While he was still a bit frustrated by her timid nature, he was no longer as harsh as he had been in the past.
If she had completely changed because of some blond-haired boy, he, as her father, would have been heartbroken.
Hiashi continued gently: "You don't need to feel embarrassed about your appetite. A larger appetite means you have better stamina than others and can extract more Chakra. This is a talent in your training."
"So, Hinata, don't hesitate to speak up about your needs. And as the eldest daughter of the clan head, it's okay to be a little more assertive."
As the head of the clan, even when expressing his concern for his daughter, Hiashi couldn't help but adopt a formal tone. His serious expression made Hinata nervous, and her long-standing fear of her father made it hard for her to respond. Changing her relationship with her father wouldn't happen overnight.
At this point, Keiko stepped in.
She handed a now-content Hanabi to Hiashi and moved closer to Hinata, who still looked hesitant. Keiko leaned in and whispered softly.
"Hinata, was breakfast still not enough today?"
She had noticed that even after eating three extra servings, Hinata didn't seem any different from usual.
Hinata hesitated for a moment before nodding shyly. If eating more could make her stronger, she couldn't let her shyness hold her back anymore. After all, holding back would mean she hadn't changed at all.
Keiko smiled warmly and asked, "Then how much do you think would be enough, Hinata?"
"If you really want to get stronger, you need to fill your stomach first. You can't grow stronger on an empty stomach."
Hinata placed a hand on her stomach, thinking for a moment before murmuring, "M-Maybe three more servings would be enough."
Keiko's eyes widened slightly, and she felt a lump form in her throat. Seeing her daughter so mature and understanding, she didn't know what to say.
'It must have been so hard for Hinata to go hungry every day.'
She couldn't help but shot a glare at Hiashi, who looked equally stunned, 'It must be his usual stern demeanor at home had made Hinata too afraid to speak up about her hunger.'
When Hiashi turned his head away, Keiko looked back at Hinata, filled with guilt.
"I'm sorry, Hinata. Mom never noticed."
"It's okay, Mom. It won't happen again..."
---
After breakfast, Hiashi, after strengthening the protection around Keiko, Hinata, and Hanabi, left the house with several Jonin.
Hiruzen had ordered the Hyuga Clan to use their Byakugan to monitor the entire village and report any suspicious individuals or activities directly to the Hokage.
For any Ninja Village, Kekkei Genkai were a core asset. The fact that someone had brazenly stolen a Kekkei Genkai within the village was a serious breach.
Hiashi didn't inform his family about the details. He simply told Keiko and Hinata to stay indoors for the time being. The village's leadership also wanted to keep the incident under wraps. After all, the death of an Anbu member and the theft of a Kekkei Genkai were matters that affected the village's reputation.
---
Inside the Hyuga Clan's training grounds, dust swirled as two small figures clashed fiercely. Hinata and Neji exchanged blows, their movements swift and precise.
Hinata's face was filled with determination as she poured all her strength into defending against Neji's relentless attacks using the Gentle Fist.
However, Neji's talent in the Gentle Fist was on full display. Despite his young age, his punches, footwork, rhythm, and mastery of the Byakugan far surpassed that of his peers. Through the Byakugan, he could see the flow of Chakra in Hinata's body and precisely target her Tenketsu with his strikes, each blow landing with pinpoint accuracy.
In contrast, Hinata's performance seemed lacking, at least in this sparring session. If one looked closely, they would notice small red marks scattered across her arms, which are marks left by Neji's Gentle Fist strikes.
Although Hinata had vowed to change, the years of difference in their training and the gap in their ages made it nearly impossible for her to catch up to Neji, the Hyuga Clan's prodigy, in such a short time.
Still, Neji couldn't help but feel surprised. He had been Hinata's sparring partner since they were young, so he was intimately familiar with the characteristics of her Gentle Fist.
In two words, it could be described as indecisive and sloppy. Her movements were rigid and by-the-book, as if she were merely mimicking the forms without understanding their essence. Her techniques were full of openings and lacked soul, appearing fierce on the surface but ultimately hollow.
But today was different. Neji could clearly sense a newfound sharpness and agility in Hinata's movements. She was no longer just passively defending. Now, she seized opportunities to counterattack during the gaps in his offense.
Neji didn't understand why Hinata had suddenly changed, but seeing her so resolute and no longer the timid girl she once was, he couldn't help but feel a surge of irritation.
'Obviously, she had no talent, but simply by virtue of her birth, she was destined to stand above me. No matter how much talent I had or how hard I worked, I could never escape my fate.'
'The son of a sacrificial pawn might one day have to die for the main family.'
"Hinata-sama, give up. As you are now, you're no match for me."
Neji said coldly, his tone tinged with impatience as he struck Hinata with a heavier blow, sending her stumbling back.
Out of respect for Hinata's status as the main family's eldest daughter, he had been holding back, hoping she would quickly end this pointless fight.
'Even though she was part of the main family, she is so weak.'
'And yet, countless members of the branch family would have to sacrifice their lives to protect her.'
Seeing Hinata panting heavily before him, Neji's anger grew, but there was nothing he could do.
Hinata shakily stood up and once again assumed the Gentle Fist's starting stance.
"Neji-nii-san, I want you to go all out."
Neji clenched his fists, his brow furrowing. He didn't know what had gotten into Hinata today.
He glanced at Keiko, who was holding Hanabi nearby. She, too, was frowning, her face filled with worry.
"Mom, this is my fight."
Hinata said firmly, not giving Keiko a chance to speak, "I want to know how big the gap is between me and Neji-nii-san. Only then can I set a real goal for myself. Only then can I stop feeling powerless."
Hinata's words did nothing to improve Neji's mood. If anything, they made him even more frustrated.
'Why was she like this? She was already the main family's eldest daughter. Why couldn't she just stay as she was, a weakling protected by the branch family? Why did she have to make that face?'
Neji tightened his fists. Keiko, seeing this, grew even more worried and hesitant. She wanted to refuse, but seeing the determination in Hinata's eyes, she couldn't bring herself to say no. In the end, she silently nodded.
The two resumed their sparring. This time, Neji's attacks were like a storm, his strikes even more precise and powerful. In mere moments, Hinata was knocked down again.
This time, she couldn't get up. The Gentle Fist was a technique that injected chakra into the opponent's body, and Neji had used his chakra to block Hinata's Tenketsu, so she wouldn't be able to move for a while.
Keiko hurried over to check on Hinata's injuries.
"Let's stop here today. I'll take my leave now."
Looking at Hinata leaning on Keiko's arms with blood flowing from the corner of her mouth, Neji said coldly. He bowed slightly to Keiko, whose expression had turned grim, and turned to leave.
"Neji-nii-san."
Hearing Hinata's voice behind him, Neji paused and looked back with a frown.
"See you tomorrow."
