Chapter 40: Sweets Taste Better When Shared

In the afternoon, at the dessert shop, Kanna, Popukar, Amiya, and "Rosmontis" sat around a small table, with a large cake placed at its center.

Knowing that a particularly fragile child would be joining them, the pastry chef, Blue Poison, refrained from her usual "artistic color experiments" and instead followed Kanna's rather "refined" abstract drawing and description to create an adorable Maneki-neko (lucky cat) cake.

While Blue Poison was making the cake, Kanna remembered that she had previously promised to treat Rosmontis to some desserts. However, she wasn't sure if the girl was in the right condition to eat sweets, so she took Popukar along to the medical department to ask Kal'tsit.

They happened to run into Amiya there, so Kanna invited her to join as well.

When Kal'tsit saw Amiya's subtle yet eager reaction at the mention of desserts, she sighed inwardly, wondering if she had been putting too much pressure on her. In the end, she granted Amiya the afternoon off so she could relax and enjoy some time with Kanna and the others.

As for Rosmontis, considering that there weren't many people on the island who could restrain her without harming her or those around her, and since both Kanna and Amiya were among the few who could, Kal'tsit agreed. After reviewing Rosmontis' physical condition while she slept, Kal'tsit determined that while the girl's body was somewhat weak, most of it stemmed from mental stress and malnutrition rather than actual illness. A little dessert wouldn't hurt her—if anything, it might even be beneficial.

When the three of them arrived at Rosmontis' temporary residence, they found her sitting quietly.

Seeing Kanna and Amiya, she actually smiled for once.

Kanna then introduced Popukar to her. Since they were all children, they quickly became friends.

Under Kanna's lead, they soon arrived at the dessert shop, where Blue Poison had already finished preparing the cake. She wheeled out the large cake and placed it in front of them.

As the rich aroma of baked goods and sweetness filled the air, the four of them instinctively swallowed in anticipation.

Amiya had heard of Blue Poison's reputation for making desserts, but she had never tasted them herself. Now, just from the fragrance alone, she already felt a sense of bliss before even taking a bite.

With Blue Poison's help, the cake was sliced and served on plates for each of them.

Sitting across from them, Blue Poison smiled as she watched their expressions light up with happiness after taking their first bites.

"By the way, does little Feilin have a name?" Blue Poison asked curiously once most of the cake had been eaten.

At her words, Rosmontis' happy expression darkened slightly.

"I… I'm sorry, I don't remember…"

Seeing her growing sadness, Blue Poison immediately realized she had touched on something sensitive.

While she frantically thought about how to fix the situation, Kanna reached out, gently wiping some cream off Rosmontis' lips before casually licking it off her own fingers.

"Didn't you hear? After arriving at Rhodes Island, you can choose a code name for yourself. If you've forgotten your old name, then just leave it in the past. Since this is a new life, why not choose a new name?

I remember there's a flower whose meaning is 'to wipe away the sorrows of memory.' In old myths, that flower could give courage to those who couldn't face their past.

I think it suits you perfectly. How about we call you Rosmontis?"

Rosmontis blinked in surprise before smiling brightly. She extended her small hand and introduced herself.

"Hello, my name is Rosmontis. I hope we can be good friends."

Kanna and the others placed their hands over hers.

"Nice to meet you, Rosmontis! From now on, we're friends!"

Outside the shop, Kal'tsit had been silently observing through the glass door. She knew much more about Rosmontis' background than the others, but seeing the girl's genuine happiness, she couldn't help but let a faint smile creep onto her lips.

"Rosmontis, huh? That's a good name."

After finishing their desserts, the group stepped out of the shop only to find Kal'tsit standing a short distance away, arms crossed.

The moment Amiya saw her, she immediately straightened up, all traces of relaxation vanishing as she anxiously approached.

"Doctor Kal'tsit…?" she asked hesitantly.

"Just passing by," Kal'tsit replied before turning toward Rosmontis.

"Hmm… Rosmontis, is it? Your body isn't in great shape, so don't overexert yourself while playing with them."

Then she turned to Kanna.

"And Kanna, if I remember correctly, you and Popukar have check-ups tonight. Don't forget."

With that, she turned and walked into the alleyway.

"Wow! The big bad boss herself! Bleh~!" Kanna stuck her tongue out at the empty hallway, making a silly face once Kal'tsit was out of sight.

She felt just like a student who had been caught goofing off by a strict teacher.

"Don't… don't say that. Doctor Kal'tsit is actually very kind. She just has a stern way of speaking," Amiya quickly waved her hands, trying to defend her.

"So, where should we go next?" Amiya asked once everyone had recovered from the encounter.

"How about the greenhouse? Lena's greenhouse has so many beautiful flowers! She said we're always welcome as long as we don't damage the plants."

Kanna raised her hand enthusiastically.

Everyone agreed, and the group started heading toward Lena's greenhouse.

On the way, they ran into ACE, who looked noticeably thinner than before.

"Uncle ACE, what happened to you?" Kanna asked curiously.

Amiya waited until ACE was out of earshot before whispering.

"Honestly, Kanna, this is your fault."

"???"

Seeing Kanna's utterly confused expression, Amiya sighed.

"When you snuck out that day, ACE and his squad were in charge of security at the checkpoints. Because of the oversight, Doctor Kal'tsit punished them by making them clean every single toilet on Rhodes Island for a whole month."

At this, Amiya glanced at Kanna meaningfully. The others quickly caught on.

"Eh-heh…"

Kanna could only mentally apologize to ACE. At the time, she had only been focused on sneaking out to complete the mission—she hadn't considered how much trouble it would cause for the security team.

Seeing Amiya's exasperated expression, Kanna quickly clasped her hands together.

"I promise I won't sneak out again! I'll even go apologize to Uncle ACE later!"

"Well, it's not entirely your fault," Amiya admitted.

"None of us expected Rhodes Island's security system to have such huge blind spots. Closure has been working nonstop lately, rearranging the entire surveillance network to make sure this never happens again."
