Chapter 191 Meeting White
(Aeris POV)
"What is going on there?"
My voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the air sharply enough that the guards froze.
I had stepped onto the balcony, drawn by a sudden commotion from below. When I was just a second away from falling asleep, I heard growling noises and the tense voice of the guards.
The guards stiffened and bowed slightly. "A wolf, my lady. It somehow got through the wall and barrier."
'A wolf?' My brows knitted together.
The cool breeze ruffled my hair, making me shiver. I moved closer to the railing, my eyes narrowed down and my breath caught.
A wolf, white as snow, its fur a sharp contrast against the dark sky. But what made my heart stop beating was its eyes. They were silvery grey… the same shade as the ones that I had seen in Damon.
The wolf turned to me, and its eyes met mine. It was so familiar… like we had known each other for a long time. I felt comfort and ache at the same time.
My fingers tightened around the railings of the balcony. "What are you going to do with it?" I asked, a little nervous now.
"We will bring it to the King… he will decide what its fate is." The head of the guard answered, motioning the others to move in on the wolf.
The wolf prowled around, baring its fangs at the guards.
"Stop." My voice rang through the tense air.
The guards stopped midway, turning their focus to me briefly.
"Since it was found in my wing, you should have known it belonged to me." I cleared my throat, tilting my chin up in an authoritative gesture.
"But princess, we all know you only talk to the butterflies…" the head guard paused, swallowing. "There hasn't been any news of you having a wolf." He lowered his head.
"Do I have to answer you?" My voice grew colder.
"No, Princess." They all bowed their heads.
I turned to the wolf. "White, have you lost your way again? At this point, I might need to fix your sense of smell." I swallowed.
I shouldn't have involved myself in this, I knew that. But I prayed he would answer me… I don't even know what its name was.
The wolf lowered its head to me, whimpering, as it was trying to talk to me.
The racing heart calmed as it responded to me. A small smile formed on my lips. "Bring White to me," I commanded.
The guards bowed their heads, and they retracted their weapons. Before leading the wolf to my room.
'Such a smart wolf… It's like it could understand me.' I walked back into my room, waiting for them to bring the wolf to me.
Not long after, a knock came from the other side of the door. I opened the door, and the head guard bowed his head. "My apologies Princess, I didn't know it was your pet."
Before he could finish his words the wolf wagged its tail making its way into my room as if it had been here before.
"I will only forgive you if you keep this news from my uncle," I whispered. "He is unaware of White."
"Oh," the guard raised his head in shock, meeting my eyes, he quickly lowered his head again. "Understood. This will remain a secret." He said with a shaking voice.
"Good, have a lovely night." I shut the door and turned around to see the wolf obediently sitting on a rug.
My heart stuttered in my chest. 'What an eventful night!'
I stood in my spot, rethinking my decision. 'What if it bites me? Why did I take such a risk for an animal I don't know? But those eyes, they held wisdom… will it bite?'
I stayed where I was, my back pressed against the door. The wolf hadn't moved. It just sat there, eyes fixed on me like it was waiting for me to come closer.
"White…" I said softly, taking a cautious step forward. "That's what I'll call you, okay?"
It didn't growl or look offended. Its ears twitched, and its tail gave a light thump against the floor. I let out a shaky breath.
Maybe it really was tame.
I crossed the room slowly, my eyes never leaving it. Every step made my heartbeat louder. "You're not going to bite me, right? Because if you do, I'll cry. And then they'll definitely tell my uncle."
'What a useless threat. I'll be dead before they can tell my uncle.'
The wolf tilted its head to the side, its eyes sparkled as if it was amused, like it understood me and how weak my threat was.
I stopped just a few feet away. "Are you hurt?" I crouched slightly, reaching out my hand, then paused. "Wait, maybe I shouldn't…"
Before I could finish, the wolf got up and walked toward me. I froze, trying not to panic. "What are you…"
It stopped right in front of me and lowered its head, gently pressing its nose against my palm. "... doing?" My voice trembled.
My fingers trembled as they curled around the soft fur of its face.
As much as I loved animals, I preferred to stay away from dangerous ones, because my powers hadn't awakened yet. I was terrified, but the thrilling feeling made me feel alive, forgetting my predicament.
"I knew it," I whispered, staring into those familiar grey eyes. "You're not just any wolf."
The wolf leaned into my hand for a moment, huffing as if I just got that right. Then padded over to the rug again and lay down, curling into a loose circle.
I stayed crouched for a moment, trying to breathe… and process my emotions.
Then I walked to the corner and pulled out an old blanket. "Fine. Since you're here, you'll sleep here. But if you bite me in my sleep, I'll feed you to the hawks."
The wolf huffed softly, closing its eyes like it wasn't even worried.
I rolled my eyes and dropped the blanket beside him, then climbed into bed, still unsure if I had just done something very stupid or very brave.
But I couldn't stop thinking about those eyes.
And why did they make my chest feel like it was full of thunder?
Then, just as I closed my eyes, I felt the side of the bed deepen and then my body stiffened when I felt a warm furnace pressed against my back.
