Chapter 12: The Crying Nora

Upon hearing those words, Arthur's expression remained unchanged.

After all, he had already known that Nora's visit was to break off their engagement.

With a slight nod, he gave only a single-word response, "Okay."

Nora's eyes widened, her body instantly stiffening.

She had expected Arthur to be devastated by the breakup. Her confidence wasn't mere arrogance—it was a certainty built on facts she understood well.

She was the Third Princess of the Magic Empire of Luminus, a figure of unparalleled nobility.

Her father, the Magic Emperor, and her mother, the Empress, cherished and pampered her. Throughout the Magic Empire of Luminus—perhaps even across the entire land—no one dared to offend her. Instead, countless people sought her favor.

Yet now, rather than showing despair or sorrow as she had anticipated, Arthur—the illegitimate son of the Vanitas family, a boy without a shred of magical talent, someone she had looked down upon—remained indifferent, even arrogant, as if the broken engagement meant nothing to him.

How could she, the proud Third Princess, endure such humiliation?

Nora gritted her teeth, her golden eyes slightly reddened, as if she had just been on the verge of tears.

Just as she was about to speak, Arthur swiftly cut her off.

"Did you bring the engagement letter?"

Nora froze for a moment before frowning in confusion. "Engagement letter?"

Seeing her puzzled expression, Arthur fell silent for a moment before letting out a weary sigh.

He hadn't expected Nora to come and break off their engagement without bringing the engagement letter.

The engagement letter was an official document binding two engaged individuals. For commoners, such a formality might not be necessary.

However, for nobles—especially the two most powerful families in the Empire, the Imperial Family and the Vanitas Family—this document was absolutely essential.

Moreover, their engagement had been arranged directly by the Emperor and Jacob Vanitas, with both of them signing the letter.

Shaking his head, Arthur reached into his robe pocket and pulled out a golden scroll tied with a thin white string.

As he loosened the knot, the scroll unraveled, revealing a page filled with various agreements, with several signatures at the bottom.

The most striking detail was the bold inscription at the top: "Official Engagement Letter."

"You're a princess—you should understand the importance of an engagement letter. How could you come here to break it off without bringing it?" Arthur's voice was cold and indifferent.

"I…" Nora parted her lips to argue but found herself at a loss for words.

Of course, she knew what an engagement letter was.

However, she had absentmindedly forgotten to bring it, assuming it was unnecessary for the purpose of her visit.

After all, her status as a princess should have been enough. She had been confident that mere words would suffice to end their engagement.

As if reading her thoughts, Arthur crossed his legs in a leisurely yet condescending manner and sneered.

"Do you think you can break our engagement just because you're a princess? Heh… It seems you've overestimated yourself, Princess."

"Our engagement was arranged by His Majesty the Emperor and my father, Duke Jacob Vanitas. If you wish to break it off, I must sign your engagement letter. Likewise, I need your signature on mine for it to be officially annulled. But it seems…"

Arthur paused, a smirk tugging at his lips before he continued, "You don't even know something so basic."

His mocking words felt like a dagger piercing her chest, making her breath hitch.

"You… You…" Nora stammered, pointing at Arthur in fury.

She wanted to lash out at him, to scold him, but the words wouldn't come.

In the end, her anger twisted into frustration and sadness, and tears welled up in the corners of her eyes.

Arthur was taken aback. He hadn't expected Nora, known for her arrogance, to break down in tears like this.

Panic surged through him in an instant. He quickly scanned the room, ensuring there were no maids nearby.

Fortunately, the parlor was empty except for him and Nora, and he let out a quiet sigh of relief.

Still, he couldn't allow Nora to continue crying.

If any guards or maids had seen her and reported it to Elizabeth, he would face severe consequences.

Without thinking, he jumped off the sofa and rushed to her side, desperate to calm her down.

"Please don't cry, Princess. I admit I was wrong and want to apologize."

"Who's crying?" Nora scoffed, but her tears only flowed more freely.

"Wuuu~" Unable to contain herself any longer, she broke into full sobs.

'Shit!' Arthur's panic spiked again, and his handsome face paled.

Nora's cries were loud enough to be heard down the hallway outside the parlor. Arthur was certain he was in serious trouble now.

'No way! I have to calm her down!' Arthur thought nervously.

He reached out, gently taking her hand, and spoke in a soft, pleading tone. "Your Highness, please don't cry like this. I admit my mistake and sincerely apologize. If you wish to punish me, I will accept it. But please, I beg you, stop crying."

His pleading, anxious voice gradually softened Nora's cries. But the moment she felt his grip tighten around her palm, her tear-streaked face flushed bright red.

"Don't hold my hand!" she snapped, trying to pull away, but it was in vain.

Arthur held her firmly, as though he had no intention of letting go.

This only intensified Nora's embarrassment, and her face turned even redder.

'What is this fool doing!? How dare he hold my hand like this!?' Nora fumed inwardly.

In her entire life, no boy had ever dared touch her, let alone hold her hand so firmly.

She was furious at Arthur, but strangely, she didn't feel disgusted or resentful. Instead, she felt a deep sense of embarrassment and didn't know how to react.

This was the first time she had ever felt this way, and she couldn't understand why it had turned out like this.

Arthur, oblivious to her inner turmoil, gazed at her earnestly.

"If you promise not to cry anymore, I'll let go of your hand."

"I promise!" Nora agreed without hesitation.

All she wanted now was for Arthur to release her hand immediately.

"Good…" Arthur sighed in relief, slowly loosening his grip.

Nora quickly withdrew her hand and shifted away from him.

Her chest tightened, heart racing, as the blush still lingered on her face, making her look undeniably cute—like a freshly ripened red apple.

'What's happening to me? Why am I acting like this?' She wondered, biting her lower lip.

In her daily life, she had always been an arrogant and proud girl. But now, she couldn't keep up that demeanor and had become… this.

She was utterly confused, unable to understand how things had turned out this way.

Meanwhile, Arthur, seeing that Nora had stopped crying, let out a sigh of relief.

'It's a good thing I managed to stop it in time,' Arthur murmured, patting his chest.

Nora's tears had been a serious threat to him. After all, she was a princess, and as the cause of her distress, Arthur would certainly face severe punishment.

'Still, seeing Nora cry… that's a rare sight,' he muttered with a small chuckle.

In the novel, Nora was portrayed as a heroine who was proud and fearless. Even when facing various challenges alongside the protagonist, she remained confident and arrogant.

Given that her father was the Emperor of the Magic Empire of Luminus, it wasn't surprising.

Shaking off his thoughts, Arthur returned to his seat and picked up the engagement letter.

He studied it for a moment before an idea sparked in his mind. A faint smile tugged at his lips as he looked at Nora.

"Princess, I have a way to break off our engagement."
