Chapter 13: Sudden Change of Decision
"Princess, I have a way to break off our engagement."
Without giving Nora a chance to react, Arthur rose from his seat and walked toward her.
"Even though you didn't bring your engagement letter, it doesn't matter. Just sign this blank section," Arthur said, pointing to the empty space on his engagement letter. "Once you sign it, the engagement will be halfway broken. To complete the process, all you need to do is send me your engagement letter, and I'll sign it. How's that? Sounds good, doesn't it?"
Seeing Arthur's excitement, Nora fell silent. She was utterly confused.
Wasn't she the one who had proposed breaking the engagement? Shouldn't she be the one feeling relieved? Yet, Arthur was the one who seemed eager.
Instead, she felt hesitant and strangely unwilling. She didn't understand why—after being so eager to end their engagement before—her heart wavered now.
Gritting her teeth, she stared at Arthur and asked coldly, "Why do you look so excited? Is breaking this engagement something you really want?"
Arthur was taken aback. He hadn't expected Nora to ask that.
'What's wrong with this girl? Did she take the wrong medicine?' Arthur thought in surprise.
Ending this engagement was Nora's wish, and as the innocent party, he had no reason to object—if anything, he was happy to help make it happen.
What? Did you think he'd try to win Nora over and beg her to keep the engagement? Heh… How absurd!
The plan to break off their engagement came because Nora looked down on him for having no magical talent.
Faced with such an arrogant and insufferable girl, there was no way he would grovel or degrade himself.
Besides, he knew the plot of the novel and had the system within him. It was only a matter of time before he changed his fate and became the strongest in this world.
Of course, he couldn't reveal that to Nora. If she found out, she'd definitely fly into a rage—and that would be dangerous for him.
"Ahem." Arthur cleared his throat, composing himself with a calm and serious expression. "Your Highness, you were the one who proposed breaking this engagement. I merely acted in accordance with your wishes. Besides…"
He sighed, his face shifting to one of sorrow and helplessness. "I'm just trash without any magical talent. My status in the Vanitas family is barely worth mentioning. With all my shortcomings, I am unworthy of being your partner."
As he spoke, Arthur let out a wry smile and shook his head. The arrogance and confidence he once had were nowhere to be seen—only a sense of inferiority and shame remained on his face.
His words came from the heart. He and Nora were simply incompatible, and that was an undeniable fact.
However, that only applied to his current state. In the future, he would steadily rise until he could stand on equal footing with Nora.
And when that day came, he had no intention of rekindling their engagement.
It wasn't because he hated Nora, but because he had already fallen for several other heroines back when he first read the novel.
Now that he was part of this world, he had no intention of letting the eunuch protagonist claim them!
Meanwhile, Nora felt an inexplicable tightness in her chest as she listened to his words.
Magical talent was the foundation of noble status. For those born without it, life was nothing short of a curse.
Though this was their first meeting, she could already imagine how difficult Arthur's life must have been in the Vanitas family.
'He's really pathetic,' she whispered, her expression complicated.
Before coming here, she had been determined to break off their engagement. But now… she wasn't so sure anymore.
Suppressing the lingering regret in her heart, Nora's usually cold and haughty demeanor softened.
"Young Master Arthur, will breaking our engagement have any negative consequences for you?" She asked suddenly, catching Arthur off guard.
He blinked in surprise, unsure why she would ask such a thing. But without overthinking it, he gave a small nod.
"If you're asking whether it will have negative consequences… then yes," Arthur admitted with a soft sigh.
If Elizabeth found out about their broken engagement, he would undoubtedly face severe punishment. Even so, he was prepared for it.
As long as he became strong in the future, he could endure whatever hardships came his way!
Arthur himself didn't mind, but to Nora, it was an entirely different matter.
'So he really will be punished… and by whom? It must be Duchess Elizabeth,' Nora murmured under her breath.
After confirming her suspicions, she fell silent for a moment. Then, taking a deep breath, she met Arthur's gaze with newfound seriousness.
"Young Master Arthur… Let's forget about breaking our engagement."
Arthur: "???"
Three question marks might as well have popped up over Arthur's head upon hearing that sudden statement.
He stared at Nora in astonishment, his expression a mix of confusion and disbelief. "Princess, what did you just say? You decided to forget about breaking the engagement? Are you joking?"
Just moments ago, this girl had insisted on breaking the engagement, yet now she was suddenly taking it back? How could he not be confused?
Besides, Arthur knew Nora all too well—she despised the weak and cowardly. There was no way she would willingly let go of the chance to sever their engagement.
Nora, however, didn't answer right away. Instead, she slowly rose from the sofa, a faint smile gracing her lips.
"As a princess, I would never speak nonsense or joke about something like this, Young Master Arthur," she said lightly, covering half of her face with a hand fan.
With a graceful motion, she folded the fan and tucked it into her dress pocket. Then, lifting the sides of her skirt slightly, she dipped her head in a formal, respectful bow.
"Please forgive my earlier discourtesy. As compensation, I will send you a gift in three days," she continued, slowly raising her head. "By the way, our engagement remains unchanged. So..."
She smiled playfully, her eyes gleaming with mischief, before giving him a teasing wink. "Please take care of me, my fiancé."
Arthur: "..."
"Oh! By the way, I've been here too long. My father must be looking for me." Nora blinked in surprise upon realizing it was already noon.
Still wearing a smile, she turned to Arthur and bid him farewell. "Well then, see you soon, Young Master Arthur. I'll be back to visit later."
Without waiting for a response, she spun around and gracefully exited the parlor.
After her figure completely disappeared from view, Arthur snapped back to his senses and took a deep breath.
'Damn... What the hell is going on? Why is everything turning out like this?' He muttered, his face blank.
In his mind, their engagement was meant to end today.
That's why he had advised her to sign his engagement letter, marking the halfway point of the dissolution.
But instead of severing ties, Nora had completely changed her mind and canceled the breakup.
Arthur sighed, rubbing his temples. "The plot is seriously messed up..."
