Trillionaire's Slice of Life
Chapter 399: The Feeling of a Heartbeat
The park's riverside was lined with willow trees, which even in winter, played host to several chirping birds unknown to most, perched high within the branches. Camellias, vibrant in color, encircled the riverside gazebo, their only flaw being that winter robbed them of some vitality.
Had it been summer, swathes of blooms would attract countless butterflies dancing upon the petals, which was when the scenery truly peaked in beauty.
Chu Mo suddenly took a gentle sniff, a faint yet addicting fragrance lingering at the tip of his nose. The western sun shone just right on the girl's cheeks before him, her long hair fluttering in the cool breeze. Chu Mo noticed her cheeks seemed slightly pale, the girl's whole being appeared to emit a soft, glowing radiance.
The girl in front gazed into the distance at the blue sky and white clouds, while Chu Mo, standing quietly beside her, was also enjoying the splendid view. Unconsciously, a genuine smile flickered across his lips.
A gust of wind, even noisier than the last, stirred the long hair that shielded her cheeks, revealing in an instant the flawless complexion beneath. In that moment, a sweet sensation, akin to chocolate candy, arose from deep within him, making Chu Mo feel as if he was melting.
Just then, the girl opposite turned her head, her dazzling eyes twinkling as if reflecting the cosmos, and looked at him. After a moment, the girl, with a smile in her eyes, finally spoke,
"If I didn't know you were the famous Mr. Chu from Capital City, I would have taken you for a stalker!"
Chu Mo, snapped out of his reverie instantaneously, flashed a cool smile, and seated himself in the gazebo's resting area before speaking softly,
"I used to live nearby and would come here almost every weekend. However, I've never seen you around before. Does Miss Yu live nearby as well?"
Seeing Chu Mo answer with a question, the girl in front lightly touched a lock of her hair blowing in her face. Tucking the strands behind her ear, she looked at Chu Mo with eyes filled with curiosity. After a long while, she gently said,
"My home is not far from here. Last week at the bar, I heard some friends say that Mr. Chu from Capital City is ruthless and will do anything to achieve his goals—so much so that for trivial matters, he would ruin people's lives. Is any of that true?"
Upon hearing this, Chu Mo raised an eyebrow. It was the first time he'd heard such an evaluation of himself from the top circles of Capital City's scions. He smirked wryly and took a gentle breath, the light fragrance tickling his nose as he casually said,
"Is the answer very important to you?"
The wind paused for a moment, and the girl's hair once again covered half of her face. She nodded earnestly and then said with seriousness,
"Of course, it's very important. I'm quite a blunderer and could easily offend someone inadvertently. If you're the kind of person who would take revenge for a slight offense and bring down someone's entire family, I wouldn't want to drag my own family into it!"
Chu Mo shook his head with a wry smile. It was rare for him to find a girl he was interested in, and he was surprised to find that in her eyes he was such a character—this was certainly not an easy situation to explain. To most of the second and third generations in Capital City, he indeed stood out as a unique and odd entity.
When there were conflicts, the usual approach for other scions involved methods like suppression or petty undermining. Chu Mo, on the other hand, handled things quite differently. Those who offended him would at best be utterly disgraced, or at worst, it could lead to the downfall of their entire family, uprooting them completely.
This way of handling things was entirely different from the usual standards of the scions, but it equally established Chu Mo's prestige. Now, within Capital City, anyone who knew of his reputation would certainly choose to walk around him.
As for anyone else who dares to stand up to him, one truly cannot find such a person in Capital City's second-generation circles.
Chu Mo didn't bother explaining, his gaze shifting to the flowers outside the pavilion. There are very few flowers that bloom in winter, far less than the profusion of purples and reds that fill the park in summer. However, the flowers near the pavilion bloomed exceptionally vibrant, the reds, purples, and blues of their petals were especially beautiful.
A few yards away on a path, several men in black blocked the way, and the tourists around were dispersed elsewhere. Otherwise, Chu Mo wouldn't be able to enjoy such tranquility in the pavilion. He breathed lightly and spoke casually,
"Many things still have to be seen and experienced by oneself. I am actually quite curious about your hair…"
Before he could finish speaking, the girl in front of him slightly pursed her lips and said,
"Not this again. I don't know how many times I've answered this question. It seems like everyone who gets close to me asks about my hair. Let me tell you, I've been growing my hair for twenty-two years, ever since the moment I was born, and never cut it. But now I am considering cutting it because I am about to enter society, not as carefree as when I was in school!"
Sitting in the pavilion, Chu Mo slightly tilted his head back. He clearly smelled the faint scent of lavender on her, not at all overpowering, quite comforting, his heartbeat slightly forceful.
Chu Mo could clearly feel his heart beating faster than usual; he had never experienced this feeling in front of any other girl, not even Ding Qian with her dreamlike face, or Yang Duoer, the top beauty of Capital City.
"I actually think it looks quite nice as it is, so what about stepping into society? Your hair isn't bothering anyone. Besides, which law states that girls are not allowed to have long hair!"
Chu Mo looked serious, with a sincere expression in his eyes!
The girl in front of him tilted her head slightly, a lock of hair spilling down from the side of her ear, even reaching down to her feet. Her clear and perfect face showed a trace of emotion, as if this small piece of affirmation was enough to move her.
After a moment, the girl with the long hair, who narrowed her eyes slightly, also sat down in the pavilion, her voice unusually gentle,
"My hair was grown by my grandma. Grandma said girls with long hair look very pretty. But I'm thinking of cutting my hair not just because of other people's stares, but also because it's such a hassle to manage. Most importantly, because my hair is so long, it seems like it can't get enough nutrition, and the tips are getting severely withered. Also, every time I comb my hair, a lot of it falls out.
My hair used to be very thick, but now it's getting thinner and thinner…"
Chu Mo listened intently to the girl's troubles; even when facing those top tycoons worth tens or hundreds of billions, he has never been as earnest and focused as he was now. Looking at the girl in front of him, with her eyes sparkling, he felt his heart quicken and a warm sensation throughout his body for the first time.
It was a strange experience, akin to a distant memory from his school days, when in middle school, the girl whom he had a crush on passed him a bottle of Coke from the window, and his heart had beaten as fast as it was now.
"…By the way, I heard you have a lot of girlfriends, is that true?"
The long-haired girl named Yu Junjun asked with a face full of curiosity. Chu Mo had no hesitation whatsoever, and almost blurted out,
"No!"
