Twilight's Wolves

Chapter 28: Diner

The four vamps he was chasing stopped at a small-town diner, likely casing the place for prey.

Licking his chops, Dean hunkered down at the tree line, watching, his aching stomach urging him onward.

Looking both ways, he let a truck pass by before sprinting to the diner in a mad dash.

(Dean, wait!) Leah yelled, cursing when she saw him sprint into town. Gaining all the proof she needed that he wasn't in his right mind though it did little to help her with the situation.

(You're going to be seen!) She shouted to no avail as he smashed through the window. Listening to the screams and panic shouts of the people inside.

Not knowing what to do, she stuck to the tree line, ready to act at a moment's notice.

Meanwhile, Dean soared through the window, aiming straight at the closest vamp, taking his head clean off while crashing into the following one seated next to him, pinning it against the counter. By the time any of them could react, he bit off the other's head, swallowing them both.

A furious shout and a guttural roar of pain and rage came from their companions.

Fully attuned to his senses, he easily dodged the first strike, a fist sailing by pulverizing the seat and counter behind it.

People only now waking up to what was happening, started to scream in pure terror. The kitchen staff and waitress ran through the kitchen and out the back while the few customers found themselves trapped, choosing to hide under their tables too terrified to move out into the open.

The second strike came even swifter and more accurate than the first as the female vamp passed the male vamp, aiming a dagger-like hand for his eye.

Moving his head out of the way, he found himself backed up against a table, unable to dodge the following kick to his left rib. A loud pop signaled the break of one as his body crashed through the line of tables, coming to a stop at the wall.

Where the male vamp pursuing closely, punches him through, breaking the rest of his ribs on that side.

(Fuck Me,) Dean groaned, most of his faculties returning after swallowing those heads.

(Dean! Are you okay?) asked Leah, spotting him.

(I'm fine, talk later,) said Dean, evading a follow-up strike from the male vamp. His fist connected with the ground hard, leaving a visible crater in its place with spiderweb cracks traveling outward.

Sirens were heard as the diner was suddenly engulfed in flames. Enough sunlight making it through to light the bodies left behind.

The female vamp that was inches away from carving at his eye was distracted by the flames, crying out in despair, thinking all hope was lost of bringing them back, not understanding how it all went so wrong.

It was all Dean needed to take her head, the male vamp a step too late as he called out to her, body erupting in flames as the sun hit the venom dead on.

He tackled Dean, who went with the momentum and rolled him right off.

Just as Dean is about to reengage him, a light gray form zooms by, and the body drops without a head.

Thinking fast, Dean grabs the exposed neck with his mouth, protecting it from the sun, and carries it off to eat in the shade.

(Thanks,) said Dean chowing away.

Disgusted, Leah looks out for anyone watching, (Cars are stopping for the blaze, and cops are showing up, we have to leave now.)

(Right,) said Dean, finishing up. Ignoring the few who spotted them and pointed while the rest dealt with the growing inferno threatening to spread.

...

Running back home, Dean apologizes, (Sorry, I don't know what came over me.)

(I do, same as back at the funeral, you need to get that hunger under control before you do something we all regret,) Leah warned.

(You're right, I didn't think it would ever become this big a problem, it seems the spirits are still not infallible,) said Dean.

(Can't you, I don't know, keep a stockpile of vamp parts somewhere?) asked Leah.

(Huh, that's not a bad idea, I'll have to think about it more but that could work, good idea babe,) said Dean.

(Thanks,) said Leah, her mood greatly improved.

(Hardest part will be getting enough parts to stockpile, need to do more night hunts for that,) said Dean.

(So, uh, I messed up, is there something you'd rather do to get your mind off things, I'd take you on a vacation if I could,) said Dean.

(I just need time Dean, everything is happening so fast,) Leah sighed exhaustedly.

(Yeah, I'm starting to get that, I sometimes forget how you're all new to this since I've been doing it my entire life,) said Dean.

(Don't get me wrong, I love that I became a wolf and can help you now, it's just a lot, you know?) said Leah.

(Yeah,) said Dean.

(You think being seen by so many people will be a problem?) asked Leah.

(I doubt it, all the way out here, one sighting, few witnesses, fire erupting, probably get ruled as gas delusions,) said Dean.

(What about a vamp who hears about it?) Leah pushed.

(Maybe, but what's a few more when we have an entire army of Newborns waiting for us,) said Dean.

(Will we be okay?) asked Leah with a hint of fear in her voice.

(Well, I can tell you one thing,) said Dean.

Leah looks over waiting for something profound.

(I won't starve,) said Dean.

She almost trips in exasperation.

...

Back at the reservation, they hear Sam talking to a new wolf, (You can do better than that Brady, let your instincts guide you.)

(New wolf?) stated Dean more than asked.

(Yeah, two more, Brady and Collin changed while you were away,) said Sam.

(They're getting younger and younger,) said Leah somberly.

(Hey,) exclaimed Brady.

(we're only one year younger than Seth,) Collin piped in.

(My little brother shouldn't be a wolf either,) said Leah unhappily.

(Hey, I'm a great wolf,) said Seth.

(Nothing we can do about it Leah, welcome to the pack boys,) greeted Dean.

(Leah!) Collin eeped meekly.

(Yeah, welcome,) said Leah.

(Let us grab something to eat, and then we'll be back for training,) said Dean.

(Alright, you heard him take a break and get ready for when he gets back,) said Sam.

(You're going to need it,) said Embry ominously, making the two boys nervous.

(Don't listen to him, you'll be fine, thanks to our new shifter abilities we heal fast,) said Seth enthusiastically, doing nothing to alleviate the boy's growing apprehension, not realizing what he implied as the two boys gulped fearfully.

Off on the side, Embry, Quil, and Jared were trying not to snicker too loudly.
