Chapter 371: The Headless Guardian
Once Eldros had been risen from the dead by the Great Tree, he had received the order to kill Zaroth.
But something deep within his soul resisted. The slave contract still bound him—acting against his master was out of the question. And even if the contract had never existed, he still wouldn't have obeyed that command.
Yes, the Great Tree had brought him back, but Eldros' soul remained tethered to Zaroth's. He was an undead creature not a beast, following the commands of a Beast Master.
Something that should've been impossible. Zaroth was a Beast Master, not a Necromancer. And yet, due to the strangeness of the situation, the impossible had become reality.
That also meant after the Great Tree had perished Eldros did not. His soul was feeding off Zaroth's and his mana core, resulting in him still standing.
With silent steps he approached the fallen body of the Dullahan, then with no shame he put his hands on the being's body and stripped off its armour.
After his resurrection, he was almost naked, so the armour was going to suit him perfectly.
And even if he couldn't die—being already dead—a little armor wouldn't hurt, would it?
Once equipped, he turned to look at the two greatswords he had wielded until now. Without a second thought, he dropped them to the ground and picked up the blade the Dullahan had used. It was far mightier than his old ones.
Still, he always fought with two swords, where would he get his second one?
He already knew the answer to that question. Moving with purpose, he approached the body of the Mad Prince. There, a weapon similar to Zaroth's was laying on the ground.
Silently bending over, he picked it up and weighed it in his hand.
The swords were clearly different from what he was used to. The Dullahan's blade was larger, while the Mad Prince's was smaller than his typical choice. But one thing was undeniable—these two weapons were far more powerful.
Fully geared, he nodded—or would have, if he still had a head. Making a mental note to later recover it, he turned and approached his master.
Zaroth was sitting on the cold ground, gaze focused on the magma serpent that was still fighting desperately against Luna on about equal grounds. The beast was eventually going to lose to her, but it was going to take too much time… and Zaroth's mana core wasn't going to last that long.
He was deep in thought, until a towering figure stopped beside, casting a shadow over him.
The menacing light in his eyes seemingly disappeared, gaze landing on Eldros.
Despite the pain coursing through him, Zaroth forced himself to stand. Tears welled in his eyes, mixing with the blood pouring down like a fountain.
"I—" he began, but the words got caught in his throat. It was hard to believe, yet seeing his friend reduced to such a state because of him pained him greatly.
A light tap
Eldros had made a fist and gently pressed it against Zaroth's chest.
What he was trying to say was clear:
"It's alright."
Closing his eyes, Zaroth took a deep breath. A burden had been lifted off his head, he was sure now. Despite his state, Eldros was somewhere there.
"I hate to ask more of you," Zaroth said, eyes drifting to where Eldros' head should have been, "But I need your help to bring it down."
He extended his hand, pointing with a finger to the magma serpent.
Eldros' body shifted slightly, as if moving his head to inspect the creature from a distance.
Then silently he put his hand over Zaroth's shoulder.
"I've got this," he would have said—if he still had the ability to speak.
Gripping his two new swords firmly in his hands, he willed for the Judgmental Eye to appear above him. The eerie eye appeared once again, setting perfectly where his head should have been.
The moment the Divine—no… the Unholy Eye formed above him, Zaroth staggered with a groan, clutching his chest. Eldros consumed vast amounts of mana to sustain, and now, with the Eye active, the strain multiplied.
Now stronger, faster and keener than before, Eldros didn't miss the reaction of his master.
He knew that he had to finish this fast, else Zaroth would really die due to the lack of mana.
The world seemed to crawl to a stop, even the wind and the smoke rising high in the sky caused by the fire all around halted for several seconds.
A shockwave so powerful, so mighty it resulted in cracking the ground dozens of feet behind him.
One second, Eldros had tensed his muscles—then, in the next, his release unleashed such raw, primal force that the houses in the vicinity were blown away by the sheer impact.
However, the destruction did not stop there. Like a warrior of death, a wrath released in the mortal realm, Eldros passed through anyone in his path.
Buildings—shattered.
Surviving civilians—trampled.
Uneven ground—obliterated. Eldros cut through it all like a blade through fog.
Once he judged that the distance between himself and his foe had shrunk enough, his muscles tensed even more.
A heartbeat later, he jumped hundreds of meters high in the sky. His massive, towering figure now dwarfed by the colossal magma serpent, writhing in agony from Luna's relentless strikes.
For a fraction of a second he dipped from sight, his new armour perfectly blending him with the thick smoke in the sky.
Then swinging his two weapons in an X formation, the Unholy Eye blazed like a curse above him.
The smoke around him dispersed from the sheer power, and the world lost color for a fraction of a second.
'Ragnar's power?' Despite the pain, Zaroth was awed by the sight happening before him, making him puzzled by the revelation. Was Eldros able to use the skill due to the Mad Prince's sword or because of the Unholy Eye?
It didn't matter.
The X-shaped strike tore through reality. It wasn't slowed by air. Not by gravity. Not by anything.
ROOOAAAAAARRR
And the next second the magma serpent let out a pained scream. So much lava began to fall from the injury it had received that it was enough to create whole lakes.
Just a single attack by Eldros had managed to cause so much damage. Sure, the mythical beast was distressed and deeply hurt but it was a mythical beast no less.
Instincts screamed in its mind, now with Eldros joining the battle the magma serpent knew that its fate was sealed, it wouldn't be able to win—it had to flee!
'Where do you think you are going?' Luna mused, not willing to let the opening slip past her. Breaking the barrier of sound, she descended onto creature.
Eldros followed her lead.
It was a massacre.
No matter how much the magma serpent tried to attack, it had no way to defeat two undead beings. And finally, after its last strength left its exhausted body, it collapsed on the ground, causing an earthquake due to its massive size.
Luna immediately disappeared, having been dismissed not wishing to push past Zaroth's mana core too much.
Eldros wasn't a beast, he couldn't be dismissed. Yet he was smart enough to know what to do and willed for the Unholy Eye to disappear, lessening the pressure on Zaroth's mana core even further.
Coughing blood, Zaroth leaned on his odachi like a crutch, staggering toward the smoldering remains of the serpent.
He was about to tame his second mythical beast.
